Dang, whoever designed this one rift's location and monsters went too far for such an early area.  It's by a waterfall and in a ravine that blocks it from three sides (the sides you need to get close to the rift), you can't climb up on top of either, and there are rocks, trees and bumps all over the ground that make it impossible to run or defend w/o jumping when you're being attacked.  Add to that the attackers themselves, some super-jumping skinny things that are very tough and can jump across the ravine to attack you, 3 of them, and the worst of all, some midget floating around with shield always up, flying out of range with a blink, taking all party damage and still getting off some dammed freeze ray and blizzard, while never losing health.

This is the 2nd time I've tried to close this one, on the first pass through I saw my party wasn't strong enough, and in the 20s, they're still not, mostly due to the terrain.  With all of the water and trees in the way, it's very hard to even see the rift for when it's time to close it, let alone get close enough w/o being overwhelmed by the monsters.

Guess I'll go back later again.  Most rifts are easy enough to close during the fight, but this one is something else.  That dead-end canyon is ridiculous.

Yes, I'm sure some of you have done or will claim to have done it no problem, but don't get out of hand and start trying to flame me or my post.

Remmeber about mob level. There are rifts in the hinterland that have mobs of level 12 and above. Those can be pretty challenging for a relatively low-level party.

Yeah, that one rift is WAYYYYYY out of the level range for the entire Hinterlands.  At level 9 I cleared all areas except the dragon area and still had problems with that one rift.

I'm wondering, though, if you lead the drufalo through the battle, does he steamroll the mobs or does he just run off?

They don't touch him. So you can run past if you need to. That rift is nothing compared to the ones that spawn two pride demons.

I didn't know that specific.  But it's the area that still is the biggest obstacle there, and my Rift power doesn't seem to ever gain enough charge to fire, though it does in other battles.  Not sure if I'm being drained or what yet.

The problem is he goes so slow and not at all if you get too far ahead.  He ignores the monsters, though, and they ignore him.  I got him back to the farm, and have battled that rift w/o him, and it's still too tough for my party, though I need to switch it around some more and try another combo.

Disagree, these skinny rift demons can jump you and knock you down from far away, which also evades many of your own attacks.  Pride demons are strong but movement is limited enough to beat them down and win.  Not with these skinny rifters, though, their health is very strong and slow to drain.

The druffalo quest isn't affected if you stay at a distance from the rift while leading it across the water.  And you don't need to stay very close to the druffalo, I ran ahead and it kept coming.  It got stuck in the water by the camp and I had to go back to steer it around, but by that time the rift is behind you.

I cleared all the fade rifts in Hinterlands at level 9.

Party tactic screen the whole time.

Party consisted of Vivienne with all frost.

Inquisitor with all Lightning

Sera bow ability

Cassie to chop away.

Vivie would drop ice wall on the demons when it came available, block out their ranged people a moment too. All four target one rage, then another rage. then the other demons. Prides were easy fallen too. My mage and Vivvie tears through things faster than can blink. Sera gets a few shots...Cassie barely gets to make hits herself less its a rift fight only or a boss fight.

No, this is incorrect.  I just did it about an hour ago.  If you lead the druffalo into the rift area, she charges the demons and makes short work of them.  She has full guard and like a million hitpoints.

That answers it!!  That's the key, and why it was set up so hard.  The druffalo is meant to attack and beat them, but I was afraid it'd die or get in the way, so I ran through the ravine as far to the side as I could and waited for him to follow, then took him back to the ranch.  Now it's so far back I won't lose all of my current progress to go back, but I'll remember on my next playthrough.

Dang, probably looks funny too, though how it gets that flying midget with Barrier on and freeze rays is hard to imagine.

So how do we get a druffalo as a companion?  If they're that tough, then dang!  ;)

I cleared that rift myself, without the Druffalo. It took a few tries (on Hard, level was I believe 7 or 8).

Still, I am now on lvl 9 (still only have Cassandra, Varrick and the elf mage) and can't beat the 2 lvl 12 rifts in woodlands near bandit fortress.

Decided to go for the Oasis for the time beeing. Hit one more lvl or two, than return.

I did beat up the dragon though. The small lizards were a challange on the way there, but dragon just stayed far away, never moving at all. Just soaking up damage for half an hour...

Those jumpy guys don't take much damage from ice, though the freeze skill works pretty well. Best way I've developed to handle them is to freeze them, then focus on the other mobs, freeze again as needed, then hit 'em with every fire spell I can from both my mages while spamming freeze whenever I can to keep 'em in one place. That trick works though most of the game on pretty much any mob that's not specifically fire resistant or a boss.

I managed this at level 10.

Cassandra as tank, Vivienne with her ice powers, Sera with her ranged DPS, and me as a dagger rogue. Because I had stealth, I was able to get close to it without it running and do damage.

The terrain in that area is horrible though. For some reason, my Inquisitor can't walk over a small stone, so I have to bunny hop across the battlefield.

The terrain right there was one of my issues.  Still is, since I haven't beaten it yet.  I want the druffalo back.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who thought that particular rift was a bit too much.

I first attempted to clear it at lvl 4 but that was pretty much impossible. Managed to do it today at lvl 8, but let me tell you it took more than a few tries.

Best way is to save your game by the river and keep reloading every time you feel you're about to mess up, provided you're at least lvl 8 and have a decent party combination.

I can also confirm the druffalo quest isn't affected by whether or not the rift has been closed.

That rift is really tough, I remember the first time I got there I got my a** whooped really fast and easy... Decided to go back after a few levels. I'm a mage, and after I found out that if you use the dispel spell on the right moment the creatures are destroyed before they are even formed when they are coming out of the fade, that saved me a lot of trouble...

You get the quest around level 4ish. Went wolf hunting and said ohh a rift i can do this. Hahaha all 3 died except varric. Ran away and then wolves showed up.

Is there a way to avoid this to get to the wolves. I will try the druffalo idea

As I had already lead the druffalo home, that option wasn't available for me.

I managed to jump from rock to rock up the waterfall and then around to the large rock platform to the right side (downstream) of the waterfall.  My companions kept the demons busy in the water and I was up high enough to disrupt the rift.

One of the problems is that red templars also spawn next to the rift and the demons dont attack them

If you try this on the PC version, regardless of the level, the fight is absurdly tough due to the position of the rift. It's so high that finding it with the camera is a incredibly tedious.

I assume this isn't a problem on consoles, as nobody has mentioned it.

I tried several times at a lower level and came back to it at level 9 and closed it.  The hardest part foe me was finding locations close enough to the rift to interact with it.

Oh, it is a problem most definitely, that's part of the location/access troubles I mentioned, though I left out that specific part.  You just can't see the thing well from the ground, and all high points but one middle rock on the waterfall are blocked in view at the very least.  It's just a tough spot, but I think now it's the druffalo that's the key and why he's up that stupid ravine.  Next play through I'm going to enjoy seeing him thrashing on them...

That's a despair demon They are a **** to fight. Best way to kill them quick is with fire spells. It usually destroys their barrier quick and takes them down fast before they do to much damage. (and don't use ice)
