I really, really want to like this game because there is so much to like. The game is massive and expansive and has the kind of story I'm liking so far (as of where I am in the story). I love having my own castle and the idea of having a huge force doing stuff as I do specialized missions is great. The combat is not always bad, but it's extremely bad for many different sets of circumstances. There is so much head-scratching design philosophy right alongside so many great things.
I like the war table, for example. I like the new companions, they feel much more like they fit in the world than a character like Fenris. They're each compelling to talk to. I like the feeling of being this prophet type person, and I still don't know how much of the game I've actually gone through despite having played many hours of satisfying content. The side missions are pretty great, a few exceptions early in the game aside. I just can't dislike this game ultimately, despite how upset playing can sometimes make me.
The plethora of tac cam failings, the severe class imbalances and weakness for 2 dagger rogues in particular, the horrendous AI, the inability to control what your AI party does as in Origins, the way enemies move around constantly and ruin the ability of rogues to flank or warriors to hold threat, the lack of healing, the arbitrary limit on potions and skills, and the enemy design which doesn't seem to have taken the game's classes into account. There are many, many class and skill specific problems I have with the game, as well as issues with how well barrier and guard work.
But the main feeling I have is that when it works, it really works. When it doesn't work, it absolutely crumbles. The difficulty seems to have spiked in the last two levels for whatever reason, though hard has been the difficulty the whole time. It just seems like these are such basic problems with basic solutions. Have rogues get an equivalent of barrier/guard for basic balancing purposes. Make enemies stop moving around quite as much as they do. Make warrior skills generate much more threat, and let rogues generate much less threat. The tac cam is basically broken, but at least make the party members follow my orders more and not disregard them seconds after I give them. That's a start.
I'm gonna keep playing and I hope the series survives this game because there is so much potential. Origins was a masterpiece, and I simply can't understand why they didn't just add new animations on top of the bones of that system. It really bums me out, everything was so close to being truly great. I've written a bunch of posts on here, my opinion is up there if anyone cares from BioWare on what to fix with combat imbalances. The PC specific crash issues and optimization issues are well known enough for me to omit rehashing them. Just please patch in a fix for a lot of this. We could have such a great game. I'll go back to playing, but I am not as happy with this game as I want to be or as I think I could be.
