Seems I'm just stuck in the lake/town section with a huge mountain range cutting me off from anywhere else.

Did you find the second camp? It is where one of the closest quest is marked on your map. After, there's a hole that leads to some sort of cave that gives you the opportunity to move forward.

Yes, that's the camp. 
You should see the cave, it is really just behind it (I didn't see it either the first time ^^; ).
