Finding this Game Really Hard

However, every time I come across a rift I get utterly slaughtered by the demons. Even general thugs give me trouble. Currently I've found a rift with a Despair Demon and a Greater Terror and after about 2 minutes its all over. The Terror in particular just crushes my party.
I'm not a new to RPGs or Dragon Age but I feel I'm gonna have to take this game down to Easy just so I don't rage quite all the time. Am I doing something wrong here or am I just rubbish?

Something I didn't know was that, apparently, you can dispel rift portals before demons emerge. This might help.
You could also be in an area meant for higher-level characters?

The game does not level scale so even though the Hinterlands is a "starting" area it isn't only starting level challenges.

Well a lot of the rifts you get into in the hinterlands will have level 12 foes, multiple level 12 foes that will do very bad things to your party at the levels you are at. Tactical cam is awful but if you get wiped somewhere go back and check the levels of the foes in tactical cam. Some things are just way out of reach. Rift fights also tend to be tough because the terrors will do that teleport and knockdown move that is trouble for your squishy types.

Agreed. First time in Hinterlands I went running up to every rift thinking it was at my level (5). Ummmm....no. As Sidney said, there are rifts that spew level 12 baddies, as I found out the hard way. (Oh, the carnage!)
My advice is to approach a rift slowly and stop when it spawns stuff. Target one of the demons to check if it's your level.
Also, upgrade your gear if you can. You should be able to pop back over to the blacksmith's in Haven and back to Hinterlands without too much trouble.
Hope this helps!

I'm beginning to find the difficulty of this game very frustrating. I'm playing as a Qunari mage on Normal, I'm currently level 5 with my companions being Varic, Cassandra and So as, all also level five.

You found the level 12 Rift smack dab in the middle of the Hinterlands if it spewed out a Greater Terror. At level 4 it's going to smash you no matter what.
I'd suggest getting out of the Hinterlands a bit, go to Val Royeaux where you can start grabbing new companions and buy some gear/schematics.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Indeed, the monsters were level 12, so that answers that question, it's not just me. ![]()

How does one do this?

Yeah, you're definitely fighting enemies past your level. If you played previous Dragon Ages, you should be fine with this one. I'm playing on nightmare and I haven't had a single party wipe yet in about the same number of hours. Tac cam isn't even needed as long as you use barrier correctly

I just feel this game isn't designed all that well. Bad controls on PC, poor tac cam, bad attrition combat, MMO style quests and spacing of enemies always in small groups almost exactly like SWTOR.
You don't feel powerful like you did in DA2 and DAO. You cannot wipe some enemies with ease (perhaps when overleveled). The battles are never epic, they are just tiny battles with damage soaking bosses and you whittle them down. The antithesis of excitement and fun.

Mages have a Dispel ability, and so do Templars (Cass gets the specialisation later on). When the rift spews out its second wave of demons, green tendrils will indicate their spawn point (''ruptures'' if you mouse over it with the mouse in tac cam). If you use a dispel on that location in the meantime, the demon will die before it even spawns. Quite handy in Rifts that spawn few but powerful monsters.

Early games are pretty difficult, but you will start face rolling everything once you get your specialization. You can solo the game with either rift mage or knight enchanter.

Think before complain. Damn son...
Sadly short of using tactical cam which I loathe you can't really get this sort of info so it isn't that hard to miss.
Plus, years and years of level scaled games have burned into your brain that any fight should be winnable.

Hmm strange... must be a L2P issue because I got really far, guessing close to the end - on my hard playthrough. Never used tac-cam even once. Rerolled nightmare to get a proper challenge before completing the game ![]()

Feel that I should give some actual advice instead of just being a smart-ass.
Regen pots, use them.
Grenades are really good.
On behavior - set mana reserve to 0%
On tactics - set CC spells to preferred.
Use tank to taunt terror demons.
Always upgrade your gear at least every 2 levels.
Make sure you are not doing mobs 3+ levels above you. Like closing a lvl8 rift at lvl5. Do it later.

yes you are...when this happens in an RPG it means you are too low level and you need to go quest or kill things and come back in a few levels...if the same thing happens rinse and repeat.
