I'm now not sure yet which so I thought I'd ask what others did. The Mage Quest (In Hushed Wispers) has the benefit of requiring less Power points so it is tempting. My Inquisitor is a Mage too. But lately, I've been feeling that both sides have terrible people so it's about choose the lesser evil.
Mages vs Templars, who did you choose the first time and why?

I chose the Templars because I felt like the game was trying to push "Templars are evil" crap and they seemed like a better option than a magister.

Mages.
Templars have the ability to nullify magic, and they're good troops. But at time, who was to judge whether their power would even come in handy? Mages on the other hand provided the ability to harness magic, and use it as required. A bit dangerous, but they were a powerful force that allied with Haven's forces could be strong.
And politically, made a statement by allying with them over conscripting. Maybe stronger than desired, but didn't feel like a jackass.

I have chosen mages, because my Inquisitor is a mage.
The result of this is that Templars became the troops of the Elder One. If I had pick the templars, I suppose that the mages would be the enemy, is that right?

Correct.

figured having basically living artillery pieces would be better then close combat troops

Templars.
After the constant villification of them in DA2, I thought it was time to have the story give them a chance to redeem themselves. Thankfully, it did, the ending to the Templar mission really felt uplifting.

I went for the Templars, because my qunari mage is generally quite in favour of the Chantry, the Circle, and Templars. The way she sees it, they treat mages much better than the Qun does. I'll try the mages when I'm playing my next Inquisitor, an elven rogue. Also, re the templar option, I also chose it because it cost 15 power, so I assumed it was a better option. That's rather metagamey, but at least it wasn't my only reason. ![]()

Templars. I am playing a dwarf so naturally they shy away from mages. But I also did it as I sided with the Templars in my Dragon Age Keep.

Mages, they deserve a chance to be free, plus my dalish mage would obviously pick mages over templars. ![]()

i will always choose mage in all my playthroughs. never the templars. if i had some time in my second playthrough (or im trying to collect the trophy), i will just choose the templars, play it to get the story and reload to have the mage option backk (even when all other options are the opposite from a previous playthrough).

Templars, Mages reeks of 'muh freedoms!' crap that Anders was spouting in 2.
I wish I chose Mages though I've heard the storyline is a lot better

Mages, I'm tired of seeing them put in golden prisons for what they just happened to be born with. And I almost always play mage myself, so in role playing aspect too, I would find it hard not to choose mages.

Templars because they are more trustworthy imo and have a better reputation. I partly did it because of my companions at first but as I went on with their questline I started liking them more and more. True its not fair how the mages don't get a chance for freedom, but such is the world and I am thinking about the safety of the people and not the happiness of the mages. The Templars are kinda viewed as the "bad guys" for the players but in the world of Thedas, they are the "good" ones. I just wanted to make them better by joining the alliance and teach them that mages are not bad.
Also Templars are hard to kill, I would rather fight the squishy mages with my Warrior. ![]()

Second question: Conscription or Alliance

On my first playthrough I chose mages, we already had templars and a ground force is easier to replace.
I imprisoned them which was hard to pick, I was being ruthless but was a mage so it was 50/50 which I wanted.

Alliance but it's a shame you don't seem to be able to remove Fiona from leadership. I don't hate her as much as others do and I understand that she was in a very difficult situation but still, she isn't a good leader and made very bad choices.

Always mages and alliance because you will have full support and loyalty...Fiona unfortunately cant be removed but she is far better and experienced then Vivienne, and she have more indluence so it is better to make alliance not force them.
Chosing a Seekers/Templars-what was lefted of Order after 90% of Rebeled Seekers/Templars with their HQ was made themselfs as red templars and already bow to Corynfeus is not a very wise and smart thing and it is not good for Inquisition because you will need to restore and support what was lefted from Templars and give them lyrium rather then give it for mages and use it for main reason to study and stoping demons and breach
Rebeled mages who was a refugies in Redclif are innocent and if you will not choose them to prefer lefted pieces of Templars, Venatory cultists will recruit them and force to fight with their enemies-templars-you who choose templars
Even Cassandra will chooise to have mages and Order is corrupt and dead and already do many very bad things what they cant change
And if you choose mages you can have magister who have researches about "time travel magic" and have some help from Tevinters, their magisterium will have news about cultists and help you.
There is no point and + to save those almost useless pieces what was left from Templars and Seekers.

I chose the Mages first. I'm playing as an Andrastian who is pro-Circle in many ways but who is a rogue and sympathetic to rebellious desires. She wants to see the rebels form their own colleges/communities. So, while I selected Mages/Allies, I wasn't going for, "Yay! Rebels!" as much as "These rebels have a cause but went about it the wrong way and need a good influence to re-direct their cause." I've been happy so far, but we'll see how it ends.

Chose mages, had to what happened with Leliana. Then I conscripted them, as they allow themselves to be led by someone with terrible leadership skills.
