Mages were kinda overdue of being out of their misery.

Templars for me. I just had about enough of all these mages...time to put them back in the Circles.... :)

Templars, but it was a very hard choice (literally spent hours mulling it over).  In the end I had to pretend I didn't know it would end up being one or the other, and simply decided to talk to them first.

Also made them allies rather than conscripting them.  After being confronting with what was being done to them, II think they've got a good shot at redeeming themselves.

Went with mages.

Not because I'm a big mage-sympathizer, but I figured since magic helped start this rift nonsense, it could help end it.

My Lady Adaar is in hot water with several of her companions right now, however.......

Templars first because I was playing a Rogue. I recruited the mages in my second mage inquisitor playthrough.

i didnt feel like i chose. i had just hit level 11,  a bit before that i had tried to reach the mages but didnt get past the dragon. i saw templars was recommended for levels 4-7 & felt like id missed it, so i quickly did it & conscripted their asses (im going straight stalin if the game will let me). yes, there was the huge "IF YOU CHOOSE TEMPLARS MAGES WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE" warning...but i figured i somehow managed to misinterpret something as clearcut as that. i cant just go over & conscript the mages now??

my character wouldve chosen templar anyway, so its not a huge deal, i just dont really get it...and that dragon, if you did have to beat it to get to the mage camp, well..seems like you shouldve  been levelled higher than 4-7 to me

You don't have to fight the dragon to get to the mages in Redcliffe.

Can anyone who finished the game please spoil it for me if this choice has any lasting impact on the story, as in different quests (aside from the one that follows), characters and such, or is it like the Anvil of the Void from Origins which basically only impacted the troops and epilogue. I don't care which is "better", I'm just interested in the scope of this decision.

I'm asking because before the game came out I planned to side with the mages on my first playthrough (as a mage) and with the templars on my second (with a rogue). I played through both missions and have one save file with ally templars and one with conscripted mages. While I found the mage quest much, much better and way more fitting to the story, I did sympathize more with the templars and lets face it, Barris is awesome. So now I'm torn.

Templars and disbanded them, turning them into knights of the Inquisition.

I didn't want to ally mages, they weren't forced to make friends with Tevinter, knowing full well the damage tevinter mages have caused they decided that is what they wanted. Not freedom, but to serve a different country. I wouldn't trust them as allies.

I didn't want to conscript the mages because even though i don't think they do, my character like any sane person would believe they might rebel again and try to flee to the Imperium.

I didn't want to ally the Templars because the order has gone too far, it will never be what it once was. Plus, even if they start redeming themselves now it just takes one bad leader to screw everything up.

Turning the templars into loyal inquisition forces is best in my opinion. They directly serve me and our goals. Most are honorable people who want a greater purpose and to help defend the people of Thedas. The inquisition gives back their honor and purpose.

Mages. I will always choose mages. This shouldn't even be a real choice. It's only there because Dragon Age is about choosing between mages and templars. There's a giant hole in the sky. This is a magic problem. Pure speculation from a historically extremely anti-mage personality is the only reason we have to believe that templars even might be able to do anything about it. And honestly, probably the only reason they can is because, again, Dragon Age is about choosing between mages and templars so both have to be a valid choice. A bunch of mages pouring all their power into the Inquisitor's mark is a reasonable solution that should work. What are the templars going to do? Be oppressive toward an entire alternate dimension? It's silly.

I'm traditionally pro-mage, but I will always send mages on this errand for the same reason I'll always send templars to guard that anti-Venatori ally in Tevinter: because it's the only option that makes frickin' sense. I want to see how the templar side goes, but I think I'll have to watch it on YT because I honestly can't come up with any justification for any character I have ever picking the templars to help close the breach. It's just daft.

I Picked Mages, and as allies. Their magic is usefull. In the last game they were pushed too the brink by an over zealous Knight Commander. My second playthrough I sided with the Templars, but suggested they should disband their order.

In DA2, the problem was more Kirkwall. The Enigma of Kirkwall makes it clear the entire city is basically the house from Poltergeist. For some reason, no one in Kirkwall seemed to notice they were living in a portal to Hell and the Chantry thought this would be a grand place to imprison the mages. It's almost as if DA2's story had some flaws or something.

Not to say Meredith didn't deserve to be poisoned, stabbed, shot, hung, stretched, disemboweled, drawn and quartered. She definitely did. So did quite a few of the other templars there. But the real problem was Kirkwall's paper-thin veil.

Inquisitor: I'd like to know more about you.
Varric: I'm flattered. Also, inclined toward extravagant lies.
---shortly after---
Varric: And no matter what anyone tells you, Kirkwall isn't that bad.

Extravagant lies indeed.

Templars for two reasons:

1.) I'm a mage, but the rebellion is dumb. The Circles must be restored.

2.) There was a dragon on the way to Redcliffe that one-shot me.

Mages, because 1) my character was a Mage who sympathized with his kin, 2) Lucius didn't seem tractable at all, 3) after learning that they fell under Venatori sway, saving them seemed a priority, and 4) despite Cullen's assertions, my character doubted that Templars could counter the Breach and help close it.

I, however, ended up conscripting them, because they had made too many mistakes already, Fiona was an unreliable leader, it was a better PR move, and as my character said when the Fade is tearing itself open and demons are running amok, we don't need Mages frolicking around unwatched right next to the Breach.

My mage Quizzy picked Templars.  She has no time for rebel mages and their dangerous behaviour.

Simple: whereas the mages add power to the mark (at least that's what it sounds like, I have not actually seen what they do), the Templars weaken the mark's target itself so it requires less power to be closed.

Because that's what Templars do: suppress magic, which itself is just raw power drawn out of the Fade.

Templars hand down for their ability to suppress magic, adding magic seemed to dangerous and my Inquisitor was a devote follower of the maker even if they didn't always see eye to eye with the chantry.

I went with the mages because I was playing a human mage at the time. However on my 2nd playthrough I sided with the templars and now looking back and comparing them both I have to say DAI has made me Pro-Templar which is surprising because I was Pro-Mage by the end of DA2.

I chose Templars because I like them better but that was my first playthrough , currently im siding with the mages and IMO their part of the story is better written than the Templar one.

Templars and personally I have having trouble justifying picking mages for any of my future runs cause they are such little dumb shits that you wanna face palm at their level of stupidity.

And course Ser Barris >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Any and all members of the mage rebellion.

When I promoted him to Knight Commander of the Templar Order, Jesus, all the feels.

Now I know know hard core pro-mages will never bother, but if you'll try the templar + alliance run and let Barris do his war table missions, you'll see what a noble, honorable order the Templars could be.

"Mages always turn to TEH BLUD MAGIK whenever they get the chance. Mages make me sick. Except if they're the absolute symbol for all that is wrong with magic, the very magisters who unleashed the blight. That'd be awesome. Then I'll follow them and me and the boys will get drunk on blighted lyrium!" Samson logic.

The gunk on the bottom of my shoes >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ser Barris. Whether they're running them "humanely", they're still about imprisoning people for a crime they have not committing.

The great majority of problems we've seen with insane blood mages and abominations was the direct result of the templars tyrannical methods. Whether templar filth likes it or not, DAI's epilogue establishes that mages CAN govern themselves and handle it well.

[b]Hunter's View of the Mage-Templar War

The words in this note have many misspellings and are scrawled in a clumsy hand:
Mother Valerie said some things I saw won't get out of my head 'less I put them down somewhere else. She told me to write it down. It's a long time since I did letters but I'll try.

I saw refugees in the hills. I was there to hunt. I saw them but did not say hello because I was on the trail. The refugees were going to Redcliffe. They were slow and bent over when they walked like old men.

Templars came. They talked to the refugees. They hit them. The refugees gave food. Then mages came. The mages used fire. Everyone burned. I was in a bush, they did not see me.

Some templars killed the mages. The mages ran. The templars wanted to run after them. A refugee was still burning. His arm went up to a templar. The templar used his sword. It went up and down. Up and down. There were pieces of black.

He stayed while other templars ran after mages. He took things from their bodies. One body was moving. It had long hair and a burned dress. The templar started to take off his armor and I shot him.

I went down to the lady. She made little noises and her eyes looked at me. Then she died.

I want it to go out of my head please Maker. I been good, I want it to go out of my head.

Templars! Totally the good guys because there's one of them who doesn't try to rape dying refugees!

I wouldn't say it involved mages governing well given it sounded like the whole war would be starting again soon in the future only between the college and the circles instead of the Templars and the mages.
