Hi everyone,

Just trying to figure out if there is something wrong with me (perhaps I'm getting old) or other people feel the same way as I do about this game.

I preordered this pretty much the moment it was available for preorder and I generally love bioware games.

I have only played about 5-6 hours of it yet, but the first impression are (or shall I say so far):

The story:

If fails to be engaging from the beginning, main character (you) is just boring, and instead of actually concentrate on trying to get to know the character or what happened really to the character, the story is like "there are rifts, go close them" - not very interesting.

If you think about origins, or hell, even da2, there was always something that you could pursue right from the start that had deep personal ties to your character (family being killed, your friend dying exploring dalish relics, etc) you could feel a connection to your character right away, something that made it interesting...

with DAI, this _should_ be the thing with you appearing from a rift blah blah, and I am sure they will get to it where you figure it all out and I bet it will get much more interesting later on, but imo you should (and probably would) try to investigate it right from the start, there is nothing that would fuel the initial interest in the protagonist...

Also, all the other characters are god damn boring as well, I dont even want to talk to them, because they just bore me to death. The only fun one is Sara, the rest are just like mind numbingly not interesting.

Also, what's going on is very spread... I cant feel like a coherent storyline happening, sure they wanted to make it "open world" more and not so linear, but it is worse for it... :( I'd expect a heavily story driven game (that I got used to from bioware) to be linear, it is single player for crying out loud. Why did they have to mess with it just to copy other games.

The controls:

Feels like a step back, really, I could control origins 10 times better, it is just confusing, targeting is jumping all around, aggro is terrible, or shall I say non existent, whole thing is chaotic. I remember totally being able to coordinate the entire team in origins on a harder fight, just switching between players all the time, pausing, healing then dpsing (oh btw ... healing??? what the hell happened to that???)

Progression:

Currently this is the thing that pisses me off the most... I cannot even progress with the story at the moment because the next thing I'd have to do is too hard at my current level, and I refuse to grind for xp just to boost my levels up so that I can continue with the main storyline... that is unacceptable.... I dont care about doing repetitive, stupid, pointless sidequests to be able to play on... I dont mind the occasional one that I do for fun but forced to grind them is absolutely out of the question... I play these type of games for the story and I want to enjoy a casual interactive story when I play a bioware game... :( at least up until now I thought that was what they did but if this is the direction they are taking then I will probably have to stop buying their games because that's just mediocre stuff that other companies do as well, or even a bit better...

That being said, I will probably force myself to play on, and try to get somewhere with it, but it is a very sad thing that it has come to that.

Talk to Josephine and get to know your character. Don't blame anyone but yourself when you refuse to try to engage with all of the story, including the optional content.

I have to say I'm enjoying the game quite a bit. Not far into it yet, and still getting used to the controls and combat tactics, but haven't found anything to complain about.

I'm enjoying the little things that come up based on my world state from the previous two games, and I like the new characters so far, like the dalish mage apprentice -- whose name escapes me at the moment. She researches enemy weaknesses for you. She was rescued from death-by-suspicious-villager by templars and brought to the circle at seven years old, hates combat, and just wants things to go back to the way they were, or the pro-Loghain requisitions officer, who has a very different view of the Battle of Ostagar.

Nope.  I'm a little disappointed with the glitches (I can't wait to recreate Hawke, but I can't do it without my character's voice changing.....) and the textures on the last gen systems.

Otherwise, I'm loving the game.  I will get a little bored with the DAMP after I unlock all of the characters, but the SP game is fantastic and immersive and I'm loving it.

The Behavior/Tactics are a step back from Origins and 2. Tact cam doesn't give me the control i was hoping for.
Other than that loving the game to bits.

For the first couple hours of the game, I was a little disappointed.  I don't really like open worlds too much, so I wasn't thrilled with the overly large areas, but then I started doing more sidequests and got to talking with more of the companions and got deeper into the story.  Absolutely love this game and I'm enjoying ever minute of it now.

Pretty much how I feel. I'm zerging through my first playthrough, which is always a throw away, just to see the end and then I'm putting the game down until the first round of patches comes out. I want to experience the game without constantly fighting it to make things work as I do like a lot of it. Right now though if I try to complete everything I can do I'll end up hating it due to constantly having to fight the game itself to make it work. Sooooo, waiting.

I'm not disappointed at all. I loved the story, the twists and such. And I loved the combat - I played a 2-handed Qunari warrior and it was good! I love that the level-scaling is minimal, it actually provides a challenge, I died quite a few times trying to close rifts with high-level demons. The size of the game can seem a bit overwhelming, but I'd much rather have too much to to then not enough. The graphics look great too. So no, not disappointed in this game.

RPG isn't for you if you want to avoid grinding. I do understand your frustration though, as I felt overwhelmed at first too, but the side quests can be fun if you let them. Acceptance is the first step, my friend.

Disappointed no. It's an enjoyable experience with a lot to explore. They could have been a bit clearer on where to go and when level wise but i guess i get that they wanted to have an experience where you go back and forth between many areas instead of previous games where it was go to an area clear all the quests and move on. Seen a few people complain about the lack of back story but that's because this time the experience is more up to you. You are given a small back story in text when you choose your race and then you are dropped into the events of the game with some explanation of what is happening. After that everything is basically up to you on how to tackle the story.

The things that bother me about the game are mostly combat UI related. The characters are a  mixed bag some i felt i'd hate like Cassandra i ended up liking and some i dislike it's the same with any Bioware game. The weirdest case with a character is Cole who i liked in the book he was in but in this game he is terrifying to the point i don't actually want to talk to him because he  scares me. Blackwall thought i'd hate but love him. Really like Iron Bull Sera i'm on the fence about. All the Mages pretty much bore me.

Exactly. Bring me 20 Health Poultices was the single most engaging thing I've ever done in a video game. That character development.

How funny of you to use an example of one of the worst DAO side quests. The one meant for beginners and has no influence beyond "yes you can make healthpotions hooray"
Sad it is that that's the level of an average DAI quest

Your weak argumentation aside, does DAI has its Ruck, its own sick-werewolf-wife or its own Dagna? Or sth similiar to Owen's daughter? Or that kid who hid in his parents house? These quests were common in DAO yet each of them was much much better than average DAI side-quest
DA2 also had some really good side quests and some really, really bad ones

It's actually the typical DA:O side quest.

That quest happens in Denerim, which you shouldn't go to, by level until, you're at least two fourths through with the game. That's also not the typical DA:I side quest.

I can't tell if this is a serious question. If you're asking if DA:I has side quests with five lines of dialogue, than yes.

It is still an example of weakest DAO quests... and average DAI's
More than five lines depending in lines you can actually choose and different emotional and interesting outcomes. Any proper example?

@Madman,

If you are running around closing rifts, BioWare took that storyline straight from "Oblivion". Other words, you may have already played this game.

When it comes to being bored, "Dragon Age: Awakening" was when the franchise lost its luster. As I keep saying in multiple threads, my apology, but - "Dragon Age: Origins" was a once in a franchise experience for me. After my experience with the first game, "Dragon Age: Awakening" and "Dragon Age II" only saw a handful of playthroughs.

I personally think the problem is with repetive themes and locations. If BioWare is not cloning some other game, they are recycling their own content. "Star Wars: The Old Republic" is just as stale.

FYI - Parts of the main quest comes from a "Dragon Age II" dlc.

No, it's the typical. Chanter's Board. Mage Collective. Blackstone Irregulars. Crows. Dark Wolf, etc. And that's not the average quest in DA:i. At least all of those have some form of actual information, and most have dialogue.

Not really, most of those examples you gave either directly tied into the main story, Owain, or had three lines of dialogue, Beaven. Even then, that was not the typical side quest in DA:O.

But I'll bite, DA:I is full of entire areas that have their own stories that are all optional.

These quests were a cash grab, not necessary for main plot. Unlike these annoying power missions
You still have not answered: does this game have quests similiar to those masterpieces or not?

The side quests are out there just so the developers can say "lots of content!" (same story with the tactical camera) But believe me when I say it gets better in terms of story and characters later in the game, maybe 13 or more hours in.
