EDIT: Since I've gotten some EXCELLENT feedback on this topic, I've decided to update it. Keep them coming, folks!

Hey, I just wanted to share some tips that have helped me enjoy DA:I a little more. I play on PS3 so some of these are console-centric, but others should be good for everyone.

Most of you keeners will already know all of this and more, so if you have more to add please do so! But if I can help even one person have more fun with DA:I, then it'd have been worth it. So here we go!

TL:DR at the end!

How to Tactical Camera (Console version)

So at first I really hated the Tac Cam. It was clunky and I didn't get it. Well now..... I still think it's clunky, but I definitely do get it.

My main tip is just don't use the "R2 to Scrub forward option". It's messed up. Instead, just press SELECT to go back into normal time again. You can get in and out of Tac Cam easily.

Use it to get a leg up at the start of an encounter. Ranged enemies can really tear you up, especially if you're a squishy class. Use Tac Cam, get your Single Target DPSers to hit hard at Ranged enemies to get them out of the fight, your mages to Barrier you and your Warriors to Taunt the tanky enemies. Hit SELECT, boom, right at the start of the fight you've gotten rid of at least 1 and probably two ranged enemies and got hard-hitting tank attacking your warrior. Just clean up afterwards, easy peasy.

Very useful for harder battles.

Double-Click a location under Tac-Cam to Make a Character HOLD POSITION

Excellent tips below let me know (and I didn't know this before!) that if you use Tac cam to tell someone to move to a spot and double-click instead, they'll hold position on that spot. Excellent for Ranged characters and making them stay out of danger and for tanks to block danger areas. Really good tip.

Check your Equipment for Mods before you sell!

Don't sell blindly.

Yes, pop everything you sell into Valuables to clean up your inventory. But remember to head to the Blacksmith first and check your equipment for Mods!

Since Mods are so useful you'll want to hang on to them. So go into that Mod menu and don't worry because even equipment in the Valuables section will show up. Strip them of mods if they have any. Then feel free to sell.

But before you do:

Visit the Monster-Lady before Selling-All!

For some reason I can only assume was some kind of oversight, creature bits land in the Valuables section. "Valuables" is a fancy term for "Junk", I think, but Creature bits are NOT junk. You can go to the Monster lady who lives at home base and turn them in for XP. Valuable, valuable XP.

So, always visit monster-lady before you go to a shop and click that Sell all button.

Save in multiple slots.

Let's face it, the game isn't exactly ultra-optimized for Consoles. Auto-save is a nice feature but it's prone to lock up your system, and when it does chances are that save is gone.

Save in multiple slots and rotate every Save. I do 3 slots and it works pretty well. Better safe than sorry!

Don't hide in the Hinterlands!

I mean unless you want to. The Hinterlands is pretty rad. But you're not meant to stay there all your life. If you want a more diverse party, stay until you're at level 5-7 and then move on with the game. You'll like it more! But again, the Hinterlands is awesome.

Grab the Codex XP bonuses from your advisors ASAP.

More XP from early on? Yes please. At first I recommended your Military Commander's general XP perk, but since you can't take perks back, I've gotten excellent advice to get the codex perks instead.

Not only do you get a great deal more xp overall (considering the huge amount of codex entries out there), you'll open up more dialogue options to get more agents. Double the goodness. So yeah, correction and my bad!

Set AI Behavior Mana/Stamina use to less than 50% (Like say 30%)

Who needs to preserve 50% of their mana/stamina? That's cray-cray. You want your squad using their abilities more often, lower that a pinch. It'll serve you well in battle.

Collect and Craft, Collect and Craft!

Who wants to spend piles of coin on merchants crap when you can do it for a bit cheaper by making your own? So yeah, stop every time you find some elfroot or iron or whatever materials are out there because crafting is fun, and you can make some pretty baller equipment!

Oh, and buy high-tier (tier 2 and above) schematics when you find them. They're pricey, but they're oh so worth it.

Regeneration Potion how I love you

Finally, your potion stock is pretty low, but Regeneration Potion is a lifesaver. Quite literally. You can't tell your AI to drink it instead of your potions, but what you CAN do is tell your AI to drink less Health potion so you can make them drink Regeneration potions when the going gets tough.

This way you can save your Health potions for real emergencies! And you'll need them: this game is tough!

TL;DR:

  • Don't use the "scrub ahead" option for Tac cam. Use Tac cam at the start to take out ranged enemies and taunt tanky enemies.

  • Check your equipment for mods before you sell them

  • Visit the Creature Lady at home base before hitting the "Sell All" to avoid selling Creature stuff.

  • Save in multiple slots and rotate them to avoid corrupted tragedies.

  • Leave the Hinterlands once you're around level 6 to not burn out on Hinterlands glory and push the story forward.

  • Your 1st perks should be the Codex XP ones

  • Set AI Behavior Mana/Stamina use to no higher than 30% so squad will use abilities more often.

  • Don't buy equipment; buy tier 2 or above schematics and craft stuff. Also collect everything.

  • Set AI potion use lower and use Regeneration potions for medium to light injuries. Save regular potions for desperation.

  • Double-click a location under tac-cam to get the character to Hold Position there.

  • Press LEFT on the D-Pad to quickly access your Map

  • Check out the rest of this thread for more excellent tips for Console and PC players!

Oh... and last but not least: Romance Cassandra.

Cassandra's delightful, you know that?

I'm gonna disagree with the xp perk, the codex ones are better I think. It's a 50% boost , so you would have to earn 500XP in a battle to get the same bonus as reading a book. And they give you more dialogue options.

I have mainly combat tips:

1. Remember that Warrior's ability 'Shield Wall' is absolutely amazing. Not only does it fully mitigate damage from the front, builds Guard with each enemy hit, but it can also do the same with ranged attacks - deflecting arrows and those annoying projectiles send by Wraith's, as well as all single targeted mage attacks.

It can save you some headache in many fights.

2. If you're fighting a Rift, and your Inquisitor disrupts it, it'll deal damage to all demons and stun them. But that's not all. You can now perform various combos on them (because they're stunned) - one of the best is casting dispel on them (or using Templar's dispelling ability) which will not only strip them of any barriers, but it will deal huge spirit damage as well - and unlike most combos - this one has an area of effect!

3. Dispel is also amazing in one other regard - if you're quick enough, just before the Rift summons second wave of enemies, you can use Dispel on the place where enemy would spawn, before it does. If you do so, this particular enemy will just disappear before spawning, making an entire fight easier (unfortunately, at the cost of XP).

Here's one tip that I recently discovered:

  • Tac-cam Hold Position: When giving a "move-to" order in tac-cam, double tapping an area to move to will also tell that party member to hold their position upon arriving at that specific point.

I know that sounds trivial, but I found myself saving TONS of health potions (on Hard) during encounters because I did not have to worry about ranged characters putting themselves in melee danger. Also, it's way better than using the Hold Position order from the radial menu. I'm now a tac-cam lover, at least when it comes to positioning.

When in tac Cam double click to make the selected person hold position, good for archers, especially if you have the perk that makes their damage higher if on elevated ground.  Varric especially has a habit of getting in the fray to hit people with the butt of Bianca instead of shooting them.

If you are struggling with a fight, sometimes jumping your way up onto a large rock will stop the non-range attacking mobs from reaching you and lets you pick them off in your own time but will have to change priorities in kill order to pick off any ranged ones first leaving the non-ranged as easy pickings.

EDIT: As tempting as it might be sometimes finding spots you can jump up and use to get access or bypass something...it is not always a good idea, the game likes to kill you and reset your position some times when do this which can lead you to getting trapped with no way out. So if your going exploring and you are attempting to get to places not meant to be just remember to save first before try.

XP perks are bad. You are limited to around 10-15 perks per game, so wasting them on XP perks will result in you missing out more awesome perks later.

Codex  perks are necessary for recruiting certain agents and completing certain story elements. They are a necessity from any completionist's point of view.

For Archers, an upgraded Leaping Shot followed by a normal hit places most foes down on their backs; makes it much easier for the remaining party to eliminate them.

All of the remaining tips have either been seen or used; good thread!

Hmmm, I go for sneakier tricks. Some people may frown upon these, as they exploit bugs or violate the spirit of the system... but I say the Inquisition needs every advantage it can get!

Healing outside of combat (without potions):

Most likely a bug, but if you have a +health item (such as a belt with +100 Health on it, though a helmet or armor with +HP should work too), every time you equip it and unequip it, your hp goes up by that amount. So if you're hurting after a fight but don't want to go back to camp yet, go through your party and rapidly equip/unequip these items to fully heal.

Tricking the War Table mission timers:

The mission timers are based on your console/PC time when you accept them. So if you accept a mission, then go and change the clock on your console or PC by setting it ahead a few hours, it will automatically complete the missions for you. Be aware that if you set the timer backwards it ADDS to the time required, though. You can just reset your clock in between missions to go on your merry way after.

Jumping off cliffs without dying:

Use a mount. While mounted you sustain no fall damage. Or, use guard/barrier.

Reroll the contents of chests:

Most chests will have random loot of roughly the same value but different type (for example, it could be a tier 2 sword, or staff, or dagger). I haven't figured out exactly how the rolling works, but I -think- it's when you enter the room or can first scan for a chest. If you know a chest is coming up, save outside that area and reload until you get the type of item you want. I have a suspicion that there is a similar mechanic for masterworks, but I don't know quite yet. I'll do some more testing.

Maximize companion approvals:

Not so much a trick as an obvious mechanic people might overlook. Quick-save next to a companion who will have a cut-scene or dialogue with approval changes. Reload, picking different options the next time, to find out which choices will maximize approval gains.

Adding the heal on hit modifiers to weapons is reaaally helpful. My mage basically never needs to drink potions anymore.
