Even at sublight speeds there's been enough time for a intelligent species to spread throughout the entire galaxy, so where are they? (Fermi Paradox). Most likely intelligent life self-destructs long before it can get to that stage. That's even more sobering.
Well, even if an advanced civilization has spread out across the galaxy (or even multiple galaxies) through traditional means, that doesn't mean they are even aware of civilization on Earth, or that they think we are worth a century+ detour.
And yeah - if life in the galaxy consistently wipes itself out, that's just depressing.
