My toon has 100 focus.  What does that do?

I can also get Perks that make it 200 focus and it says "2nd Tier focus effects for abilities can be triggered".  And another perk for 300 focus which opens up 3rd Tier effects.

I have looked on my abilities and can't see any that mention 2nd or 3rd tier nor the word focus on them?

Focus are special abilities only available once you pick a Specialization. They look Yellow and consume Focus instead of stamina. This is an example Focus ability:

counterstrike.pngCounterstrike

You push yourself to the limit, gaining full guard and taunting all nearby enemies. While the ability is active, you automatically counter all melee attacks. This ability consumes and is powered by focus.

  • Tier 1 Duration: 6 Seconds
  • Tier 2 Duration: 12 Seconds
  • Tier 3 Duration: 20 Seconds

I came here to ask this same question. I've played every DA and ME and a host of CRPGs over the last 30 years, and somehow I'm completely lost on half the mechanics in this game. I don't know if its lack of a manual, incomplete tutorial, or if I'm just getting old.

I still don't understand what focus is.

The inquisition perk that mentions focus also says that it opens tier 2 abilities. What is a tier 2 ability? Does tier 2 mean the little diamonds beside the big diamonds? Because I noticed I've been unlocking those but none of my party members do when I auto level them, so I wonder if they're doing anything for me at all.

So, is focus a higher level thing? I'm at level 9 right now. And when do specializations come into play?

According to the guide:Focus is a resource that you gain each time someone in your party deals damage. Each party member has a personal focus meter, but all party members gain focus when a single member deals damage.

Specializations must be unlocked in the War Table, after which a new skill tree opens based on your choice, and you will get the explanation of focus once it becomes available. It's pretty straight forward. A super ability that is charged by attacking and consumes that charge once used.

Gaining focus must be bugged somehow. Often not gaining even though I know I did some combos.

And is it right that the only combo i see in the skill trees are hitting when incapacitated.

I would be awefully nice with a bit more transparancy in the focus system. It's a lot of guessing and frustration atm.
