I have Peaceful Aura and mage's defense is pretty shite even past Skyhold. Without barrier I am practical a beat stick.
So I have the perk Peaceful Aura and yet for some reasons enemies are still targeting on me and trying to hit me with their stabby sticks.
Now I know Peaceful Aura is only a 50% chance of them not being hostile towards me, but what gives. Am I that unlucky for this perk to fail me not have half of that 50% of the time?
It isn't 50% of them not being hostile and not targetting you, it is a 50% threat reduction.
Threat in simple terms is how much damage you have done to a particular mob, if you have done 200 and your tank only 100 odds are it will attack you, unless your tank has taunted.
If your tank has 5 mobs around them and has hit 1 for 500 but the rest for 100 and you throw down an aoe for 400 each odds are all but 1 mob will come and attack you. With 50% threat reduction you can roughly double the damage your tank has done before pulling a mob off them.
If you charge in before your tank they will initially target you until others steal threat off you via damage or taunts.

Did you pull the group? That could be the problem, still if no one else has done any attacks or taunts on most of the mobs your aoe will give you threat and make you their beatstick.

Cassandra War Cries them
I trap them into Static Cage
Blackwall wails on them with Cassandra while they are stuck in cage
And Solas gives us lovely lovely barriers, because I filled up his whole entire spirit branch before moving on elsewhere
