I played DA:O and DA 2 but I didn't pay for their DLC. I am not a big DLC buyer unless its a shooter or one of my absolute favorite IPs for example Mass Effect. I like Dragon Age its my favorite game of this year but when I saw this guy I was very confused. I went to research him only to find out he was a villain from a DLC pack in DA2. That is not cool Bioware! Who is this guy? Why should I be bothered by him? He just feels super random because his purpose is not very well explained or if it is I haven't reached that part yet.
Why is a DLC character from DA 2 a major character in DAI

Actually you shouldn't worry that much, aside from some lore you can read online or probably in a codex entry he seems quite different this game.. more intelligent(?), and I'm pretty sure there's more to him now because he's supposed to have been killed >.>

The DLC was used to introduce him to the world without having to make an entirely new game, which honestly makes sense to me as it's the most cost effective measure in terms of coverage. We could have had a book, but I wouldn't be surprised if even less people read those than play the DLC. With that said, however, I never played that DLC either and I feel they do a decent enough job explaining him without it. What I don't know or what isn't explained I can hop onto Wikipedia to find - just like I'd do with a book character I'm unsure about like Cole. Hell, a good chunk of Loghain's motivations are in the books alone back in Origins - and having DLC characters become a major focus isn't a new thing. Anders anyone? (Though Anders is a terrible example as his character took a 180 when he and Justice merged.)

They explain that in a pretty cool scene, and from what I read it's even implied he can survive in the DLC itself based upon how your warden ally is acting.

It's not the first or last time that a game has borrowed characters from the expanded universe. Kai Leng in ME3, Elminster and Drizzt in BG/BG2, random multiple guest characters in fighting games. Its an annoying trend but then to get just enough explanation for the new comers whilst serving as a fangasm treat for the well versed in the lore.

I always had a hunch Corypheus [highlight to see spoiler] was the elder one from the trailers.. the voice and all that.. I have not gotten up to it yet but I am still trying to work out how he escaped death when I clearly put a lightning bolt through his skull. Hopefully that will be explained.

You don't need to play Legacy -- Corypheus is introduced from scratch for new players. The DLC was just a fun way to introduce him to fans when they knew he was going to be the villain of DA3.

It is explained in Legacy, sort of. The most prominent fan theory is that Corypheus, like an Archdemon, can body hop into the body of a darkspawn or warden except he can somehow survive; this may be through his knowledge of magic, blood or normal, the extent of his taint or the fact he still has some form of soul or individuality. The theory is very heavily based on the moment before his death. Before his coup de grace Corypheus locked his gaze on Larius or Janeka who visibility stumbled from it. Immediately after his death Janeka and Larius exhibited changes in speech and behaviour and disappeared almost instantly after the events of legacy. It wouldn't be too hard to imagine a being powerful enough the breach the Golden City being able to cheat death.

True, but I am thinking in terms of appearance. Even if he had body hopped into either Janeka or Larius, there is still the question of his physical appearance.

In the same way an Archdemon can recreate itself into its dragon form from something as small as a Genlock I would assume Corypheous has the same ability

"Dragon Age II's" dlc was called "Legacy".
As a matter of overall fact, the story is virtually the same.

I find it more annoying that I would be expected to read the codex or look it up online in a story driven game. Its why I am annoyed by this in the first place. To me if I have to go outside of the game to find out why it makes sense then its bad story telling. Bioware is better than that.

Everything about Cory is explained in-detail in DAI, you do not need to play the dlc, the dlc just gives you more exposure since it was his first meeting. His survival, the battle in DA2 ect All that is explained in DAi as the game goes on.

Cory is a perfect kind of villain IMO. The Legacy DLC didn't give him a chance to be anything - he wakes up and dies. So I'm happy with him being the big bad. It makes sense. It kind of ties it all together - Darkspawn (Origins,) DA2 (Hawke,) Mage (DAII and DAI,) Tevinter (possibly setting up for the next installment)

The entire point of the Legacy DLC was to set Corypheus up for a bigger role later on. I admit, I didn't think it would be this big of a role - though many did guess it, I was a doubter.
Still, I'd hardly consider Legacy to be required playing for DAI. I think Cory's back story is adequately explained in game and if anything, not having played Legacy heightens the surprise as you're less likely to recognize him early on.

Legacy is not required to understand who Cory is. DAI covers it in detail through cutscenes and dialogue with companions. Your Quizzy didn't go through any of the events that lead to the release of Cory, so why should they have any more info available to them than second hand accounts?
There are a bunch of DLC and book characters mentioned and featured in DAI, if you know who they are already great, if not the game itself explain it.

For the same reason the abomination from the last Origins DLC turned out to be one of the final bosses in DA 2. These DLC just serve to add a little extra lore to the bosses. Persoanlly, I think its a really cool tradition being set here and I hope we can a sneak peak at DA 4's boss from DA: I DLC.

It's not uncommon for BioWare to make a bridge DLC between major episodes. In this case, I barely remember that DLC - I don't think it was their strongest, although it was OK. I wouldn't worry about it too much. At least there's no character based on one of the cosmetic equipment packs ![]()

Why are major bad guys from DAO and DAA both characters from books?
Because it doesn't matter. They make enough of themselves known in the game itself.

Minor spoilers
Major Spoilers
I really like that they bring in characters from the books and DLC into the main game. It makes me feel like they are real characters in the world. Cole, Fiona, and Briala are perfect examples of this.

I was actually a bit annoyed when I saw him to be honest, I don't find him entertaining, scary or engaging as a villain really, I hope there's something more to him other than him trying to take the Golden city again, or he's simply a front for something more sinister.

Check out my previous post for some of these answers. While it contains some spoilers, it won't ruin the story, or surprise for you
Also, I believe that he is able to jump bodies through the taint due to taint originating from him, being the first Darkspawn and all haha
