1) What does fighting, UI, loot system and romance have to do with "cardboard world" (the premise of your post, that is a very specific thing: i.e. the interaction with the background as NPCs, objects etc.) is beyond me. You naturally added them just to try to sound convincing as you had nothing of important.

2) The most fun part is that you call yourself "DAOfan" as if in DA:O you could interact with all objects and NPCs instead (maybe you have mistaken DA:O for Ultima, who knows). Oh well...

I don't either bore to reply to your points one for one given the obvious lack of a real meaning behind the formal complain. As it is always the case whinings always begin with "I don't like this aspect" very marginally and then it immediately turns into an UI, control scheme, loop radar "bashing" also if these things have absolutely nothing to do with the former argument. This alone reveals much too well the real lack of points to address.

It's always the same three things over and over: UI, control scheme and loop radar and they have been addressed already a thousand times in all the threads here (even if you agree with them, which I don't: I sincerely think that many that complain with the control scheme have played the game for just 1 hour because apart some evident things not working correctly the combat works very well and many people, me included, are enjoying it). When you have people that complain that 12 potions are not enough between camps in normal difficulty and then those same people are the ones that complain about the combat scheme you already understand everything...

Reply to other threads that address those issues and don't start another thread that talks of exactly the same things masking it for something different. It's childish.

Its rather irritating how agressive some people in this forum are - and they call people that critisize the game "haters"? Rather ironic. Sometimes it almost seems as if some people take critique of the game personally?

My main points are the Cardboard-NPCs - i just added the rest because it was what made the game fail for me as of now - from my subjective point of view.

The more I think about this the more I realize that, while Skyrim has more memorable NPC inhabitants, it also has a lot more generic NPCs that say the exact same garbage. DA:I at least has a lot of unique characters in every location even if they're quite thin.

It's just a word they throw out to dismiss an argument they can't argue against. It's the same as calling someone a racist in political discussions.

Loot can be found from chests and sacks so I don't know what you're talking about OP. Things like barrels are also destructible and bigger creatures can destroy the environment themselves. So I disagree with that criticism. The world's NPCs are the only problem and the lacking interaction but other aspects of the world feel alive (roaming enemies, different groups of enemies fighting, wildlife etc).

Romance shouldn't have been included at all if you ask me as Bioware is just terrible at it. The writing for romances is cringe-worthy.

Companions can be interacted with at all times back at camp/Skyhold, I think you're confusing Inquisition with DA2 now and I agree that the hairstyles are really really bad.

Other than that, I disagree with the rest of your criticisms. I think the combat is fine.

Yeh but only 1 chesttype and 1 sacktype, not all the rest, also destroy objects?

I heard about this game called "life".

It's pretty good occasionally.

yeah, i've played it a bit.

visuals are pretty realistic. but who cares about those if the gameplay is terribad and story is boring as hell.

But the excuse was always the antiquated engine, I think people may have expected more with new engine.

Ostagar was the best, most lively area Bioware made in a DA game, and it was even returnable to.  Captain talking to his knights about the Darkspawn, mages practicing, dogs moving around outside the kennel, digging in the ground, the woman preaching, guards patrolling.  I'm not even saying it was outstanding, but at least the area felt alive.

Erm. Have you played the game? Skyhold? Haven? More areas that I'm too lazy to list.

Honestly NPCs interact with each other, granted it rarely changes but its enough interaction to make the area feel 'alive'.

There are big chests, small chests, ornate chests, pyramid shaped chests, hexagonical (is that a word?) chests etc. - loads of different chests, but yes, just one type of sack. Probably because a sack is pretty much a sack is a sack is a sack...

And yes, you can destroy things like crates. I've done so several times to get to enemies who were hiding behind them.

I completely agree. The game world look static. There's no NPC schedule not they even walk at all. They just stand at the same place doing nothing. It's not a living world at all. Also the animations are quite bad. It seems like they reuse the animations from Mass Effect.

I really hope they can improve this in the next game which unfortunately will be very long time from now.

There are actually a number of NPCs who do walk around and do things. They move from a to b. They deliver messages to your companions in Skyhold, they climb ladders, they have conversations (which actually change!). Are they as mobile and on an actual schedule like the NPCs in Skyrim? No, but then Bioware never did that. No, not even in DAO...

Also the world is not static, it changes. Your actions have impact. This is a non spoiler forum so I can't say too much, but sometimes you can change things for the better and sometimes when you have dealt with one problem in a zone, another one would raise it's ugly head. I really liked that. Made traveling back to places more interesting.

I agree with the OP. I think the lack of cut scenes made everything in the worlds seem... forgettable. Redcliffle was the "busiest" place in the game but I hated going there because not only did my game lag like crazy, it felt SO weird to run through all those static people. They didn't seem like people at all. The NPCs all look the same and are as dull as they can be. If only the camera would zoom in more on their faces during conversations maybe it would be different. You can barely talk to them and ask things, the conversations you have with them are as brief as possible and you can't even answer to things they say. "People need blankets", "Goodbye" I mean, really? Couldn't we have at least a couple of options to answer to that like "I'll do my best to find these blankets" or "I don't care!" You don't even have the option to turn down the fetch quests.

People say the static NPCs were always there in Dragon Ages games, but at least you could interact with most of them. I remember A LOT of the NPCs from Origins. Heck, I still remember that random guy in Lothering screaming that the end was near and the darkspawn was going to eat them all. In Inquisition there wasn't a single NPC that stood out to me, they all seemed like boring statues. And again, I think the lack of cut scenes was the problem here, because this new way they made the conversations with NPCs seem lifeless and too quick and you don't get genuine reactions and emotions from them like you would if it were a cut scene. So when you return a ring to someone you just hear their relief in their voices while their faces and posture stays the same. I'm not saying I want cut scenes for everything but at least SOME of the conversations.

I think Bioware tried too hard to make the game look good, to give us pretty worlds to look at and forgot about the stories that make the Dragon Age games amazing. Obviously with such big worlds it's hard to fill them up with stories and I think that's where they went wrong. They tried to be like Skyrim so the main story just gets lost in the huge worlds. That's why I love Origins so much, it's about the story and it should have stayed that way.

I fully agree with the OP.  On a side note, the characters in Origins where flesh and blood and I cared about them all.  In Inquisition the characters are all cardboard cutouts, and I don't give a toss about any of them.

Cardboard World

Besides the huges issues with PC-Controls and even more casualization i have one concern that will probably stop me from playing within hours. Is this just in the beginning? Or since nobody posts about this am i the only one who cares about that?:

  • there is no NPC-Interaction besides fixed interactions at all?!
  • there is no Companion-Interaction besides fixed interactions?!
  • NPCs generally act more like cardboard-walls than NPCs - they dont react to the player - they wont move - they are completely non-interactive?
  • allmost all objects in the world are non interactive(chests, barrels etc.) - loot comes from random stuff lying on the floor instead of all thos barrels etc.?!
Maybe im the only one but this pretty much ruins the game for me. It feels as if i am running trough a huge dead world. Size simply cant compensate for the small interactdions that make it feel alive - which seems to be completely missing in this game.

Will this be better later on or is this a constant problem? How can this even be considered an RPG when there is no Interaction besides scripted interactions?

Fighting:
  • This for me is just gamebreaking (besides the awful controls, the boring fight-mechanic (seriously wtf did they think - either make it a hack and slash or a tactical almost turnbased fight - but this mixture just combines the worst things of both worlds ...))
UI:
  • the UI is ugly and looks completely out of place it looks like a SciFi-UI
  • the Inventory is bad aswell it looks exactly like the awful Skyrim Design - which is great for consoles - but completley sucks for PC
Loot-System:
  • costantly pressing a button just to see loot because its not where you would expect it (in actual chests etc. ...)
  • constantly beeing remided of the awful out of place UI with the worst sound ever for an RPG (seriously i am 99% certain that sound is copy pasted from the motion tracker in Alien ...)
Romance System:
  • Why even bother including a romance system when there are barely any options combined with some of the worst looking NPC-Faces i have ever seen?
  • Not every Charackter should look like a supermodel - but some should at least look decent ... (i especially dislike that pretty much every charackter has short hair ...) (not to mention the general lack of fantasy apropriate themes - most of the hair styles are either awful or out of place (lots of undercut stuff etc.) sure add those but please also add fantasy hairstyles that look good (but i guess Bioware always failed when it comes to hair ...))
Am i the only one that feels like running arround in a cardboard-world?

I agree with just about everything in OP's post and I am glad that I am not the only one that has noticed all of these shortcomings with the game.

I have a similar list of issues myself on Xbone that are holding me back from fully enjoying DAI:

-Ugly, poorly animated NPC's
-Inexplicably choppy cutscenes
-Unsatisfying hybrid mmo combat
-It is very hard to make a non-wierd looking character with the character creator

I started out with a rogue archer but the combat with the bow just felt so milquetoast and lifeless that I went back and switched to a mage.

Combat with the mage felt MUCH better but then I noticed that she always used THE SAME ANIMATIONS over and over even when casting different spells and that took some of the fun out of it.

It's the fact that DAI is missing the mark on so many big and small details that is so frustrating because the ME series has shown that BW is at least capable of putting out a polished game.
