Threat mechanics, how does it work?

Greetings,

 

Having played a Tank in several MMOs, i'm familiar with the idea of using Threat to control mob AI (aka "aggro").  Unfortunately, it's not exactly clear how Threat works in DA:I.  This is important because it's a given that SnB Warriors have less DPS and Taunt generally isn't enough to hold aggro.  This is especially true with skills like Shield Wall where Threat generation appears to be zero.  I end up having to rely on the Tactical Camera and pausing the moment the mobs appear to turn to other party members.

 

Can anyone shed any light on how this works?  Is there a way to hold aggro without having to micro Shield Wall or use Taunts every time they're off cooldown?  Thanks in advance!

Tanking in this game is not all about holding aggro. It's about being having good position and mitigating damage that would othewise hit squishies. Use your tank to lock down the biggest threats to your party. Keep party members within taunt range of your tank so you can reacquire aggro immediately. Use CC to keep the more dangerous or inconvenient enemies disabled. Use Bodyguard and Barrier to reduce incoming damage to your party. Use knockdowns or interrupts to stop dangerous attacks.

I get the whole bodyblocking thing, but mobs just slide right by if I lose aggro.  As for CC, my Frost Mage and 2H Warrior have more CC tools than my SnB Warrior.  I've essentially resorted to initiating the fight with my SnB Warrior to get initial threat, then Taunting in the hopes that the rest of my party can Primary it or lock it down before the taunts wear off.  Feels kinda clunky, though.

Spam Shield Bash. It's basically an aoe CC too with decent damage and it has a pretty low cooldown. I understand your concerns though, which is why I tend to run two warriors most of the time.

My impression is that threat is largely proximity based. I find that my tank loses aggro less often when he keeps the enemies at a distance from my party. As long as he lands taunt on all of the enemies, my ranged dps rarely gets attacked.
