Seems like many of the the non-rushers are just getting to Skyhold now.  I'm 28 hours in and just made it there.  That's after almost 100% completing the Hinterlands and the Storm Coast.  I heard that once you get to Skyhold you've only completed about a third of the game, so I'm thinking this game is going to take me close to 100+ hours to complete 100%.

I won't say the name of the quest cos spoilers, but one of the main plot missions took me a long ass time. But it was so much fun because there were lots of mini missions within it that were optional. I only managed to get some done because I didn't have "enough time" to do them because of a certain someone deducting that time from me grrr

Yeah... tell her to play elsewhere!

I think I'm about 23ish hours in. Still got TONS on my checklist.  Wrappe up the "Abyss" quest. SWEET MAKER it was awesome!

Now I'm off to shop, craft, quest!

Hmm... after 53 hours I should start this, perhaps....

People play differently, especially if they end up getting sucked into the crit path/main narrative.  That's okay though :)

DAI is looking like it might be the first gigantic open world RPG that I intend to finish 100%.

My plan is to do the crit path and companion quests almost exclusively on my first playthrough with just a smattering of sidequests, both because I'll be short on game time for a while starting soon, and because that'll do wonders for keeping my other three planned playthroughs fresh.

If people want to do their very best to spend the least amount of time playing the game they paid for then by all means let them.

Personally however i believe by rushing through or "Speed running" a game you forfeit your right to be taken seriously when it comes to a discussion of the games quality. You did your best to avoid doing everything therefore you can hardly stand up and have an opinion of it.

Actually, "rushers" as you put it will see the best bits of the game and enjoy their time more. Story missions have been excellent so far out of the ones I`ve completed. And companion quests are pretty good as well. But the open world part is actually pretty sparse in quality content when you look at it from a distance. Graphically it has been done amazingly well, but most of the stuff out there is just filling a checklist to get more influence and power points. You spend a lot of time just picking stuff up and fighting respawning enemy groups just like in any generic MMO. Only thing that keeps it from being totally boring is that there are several activities that can be alternated.

So I`d say completing as few of the more generic quests as possible would just improve your experience. Also would not burn out you for trying another class instead of doing "completionist" run right away.

I swear I have the best intentions! I always start slow, thorough...

..then some wham moment in the plotline hits, and then I have to fight not to shove through the main narrative as quickly as possible, desperately wanting to devour more of the story...

40 hours in or so, with, I'm judging by Achievements, 4 major quests left. No idea how much that is....

..and already fighting the desire to start more playthroughs to test different classes and angles...

...and so far, the plot started competent but not exceptional and quickly went to "HOLY ****!"  right before Skyhold, and HAS NOT STOPPED SINCE! Orlais and "Abyss"... (Abyss is my favorite mission of "it's type" in the franchise... and not at all a chore liek some of "it's type" of mission have been previously. To me at least.) were both exceptional and left me saying "Daaaayuuum."

I never rush through my games. I like to explore, find treasure, listen to party banter.
I much rather let the game last as long as possible. Get every ounce of the beautiful graphics of every area soaked into my memory.

I haven't had a game turn out so matched to the hype in a long time. I hope it never ends ;~;

I don't really know - maybe they have work and family obligations or just need to buckle down and study if they're in school, etc. Or maybe it's some sort of speed-run achievement deelio for others. Me, I now have 70+ hours in and still have a lot to do. I will admit at least six hours of that was me sitting around and checking in on war table missions while I worked today. I had to do edits, but I also wanted to keep my war table stuff going due to the length of certain missions at this point (sent Josephine on a mission earlier that will ultimately take 20 hours *facepalm*). If you're wondering how I can manage to get away with that, it's because I telecommute - woohoo!

Now ignoring my six-hour war table session, that's still 64 hours of actual playing. And I still have a lot left to do - heh. Whatever their reasons are, people who rush are missing out a bit in my opinion. I'm trying to do everything (I am a hopeless completionist), but I am also taking time to enjoy wandering around and seeing the sights, etc. I'll probably even replay DA:I, which I haven't done with any other game recently. For the most part, if I finish a single run through a story, that's more than enough for me now...unless I enjoy the characters, the writing, and the world enough to a degree that I'm willing to commit even more time in the game.

So far, DA:I is the only game in the last couple of years that has made me feel like seriously replaying it more than once. I liked Wasteland 2, but I tried to get another run going and just stopped a few hours into a second run. I enjoyed Skyrim despite having to start over due to a computer meltdown, but I've only played it once and feel zero urge to go back to it. I liked FO3 and finished it once - never really finished a second run and stopped partway through when I tried to play it again.

Bethesda in particular could probably take a few lessons on writing and how to create characters that have actual personalities (also lessons on how to create hot male LIs like Blackwall and Cullen, tyvm).

EDIT: Whew, turns out that I overwrote that save after I accidentally sent Josephine on that super-long mission (actually meant to send Leliana to get it done faster, heh) - whew!

Straight male who freely admties to often playing female characters (Okay, so I thought Jennifer Hale was a better Shepard and it went from there). Not at all uncomfortable playing through a straight relationship from the female PoV.. and yeah, got to say, I love the Blackwall romance so far

Well I love blackwell in general. In an age of clean-shaven prettyboy heroes, it's nice to have a big, burly beard-bearer to be representation for me (being a big, burly beard-bearer). And as nutty as my poor Elf Mage's life has been, the stability he provides just felt too natural a fit to pass up there.

Just to clarify:

If someone "rushes" through a game, because of scarce time - work, family, etc. - then that's totally ok for me.

Also, if people enjoy the major plot line more and therefore skip side stuff, I can understand that, too.

What I meant was rather the type of gamer, whose first and only goal is to finish the game ASAP and then post stuff

on the forums in a bragging manner, like

"...ways too short...",

"...too simple, dumbed down..."

and the like.

I guess, you see my idea.

I'm not much of completionist, so I doubt I will chase down most of the more esoteric side quests, I'm mainly here for the main story. I also don't care much for the combat system this time around, so the idea of spending an inordinate amount of time fighting the controls is not all that appealing.

After I found out that gaining influence and power through side quests has no meaning at all for the main story I started to skip most of the stuff, which I felt was mostly generic and uninspired anyway.

I have to agree OP. I find the people rushing through this game bizarre as they've probably missed out on a load of content and optional areas to explore but whatever. It's their game to play the way they want right?

I wouldn't be pointing my finger at them. They have a ton of content in those games as well.  Now some other series....are definitely lacking.

But that content quality is lacking in recent Elder Scrolls games. Admittedly, the optional quests for Inquisition are mostly fetch/kill quests but at least the story missions are interesting and at least you get to make choices in the story, more importantly, each region is unique with their own enemies, history and loot to find which is more than can be said for Skyrim.

I want to explore every area fully in Inquisition but I couldn't say the same for Oblivion or Skyrim, the later of which is still sitting with no more than 15 hours played from when I was gifted it on Steam a long time ago.

30 or so hours in I just got my Knight Enchanter spec and only recently hit Skyhold. I had fully explored the Hinterlands, Storm Coast, killed a dragon, collected every available shard, and only then moved onto your heart shall burn. Glad I did it too, I feel like I can choose and move freely through content. I just finished the Western Approach last night. It takes a good day of solid playing to complete any single area.

4.5 days straight gaming...

...annual leave taken....and 'working from home'..ahem....

...coffee drunk to excess...

50 hours played and I've finished the story part of the game *just* before the little boy arrived back from his grandparents...

Now, I get to pick off the remaining quests 1 at a time as a 'reward' after settling him each night.

I *know* I've missed so much, but I can always do another playthrough when he's old enough that I can send him to camp...

I guess I have the shortest play time on the BSN then, having finished in 37 hours.

I did most of the side quests too, only ignoring the Seeing Red and Favors of the First Enchanter quests for Varric and Vivienne (because I can't be arsed to hunt down 12 lyrium veins across 6 zones at a rate of 2 per zone, and 12 books at 3 per zone), respectively, and a handful of fetch quests. I didn't go hunting down Skyhold customization options from merchants either, because that's hardly compelling gameplay.

Here I agree. Many quests of this kind I will ignore, too.

Nevertheless, I'm about to hit hour 80. There's plenty of good stuff beside this fetch and gathering stuff.

Just finished my first playthrough after 92 hours. I pretty much completed every area except Hissing Wastes and did all the companion quests I could get.

I reached Skyhold in about 75 hours. Though I did muck around with different character creation though, so maybe 65. Nightmare though, so there were some long fights and grinding levels to deal with the main quests...

In Skyrim, to a degree, I could see your point. The infinite randomly genreated quests aren't my favorite, though they do give you endless things to do. In Oblivion...well I can't follow you there. I've probably put more time in that game than I'd like to admit.

It's strange... I played all elder Scroll games, but never finished one. There is still a rogue/caster/assassin/marksman sitting somewhere shortly before the endfight...

In the meantime (it was hour 106 this morning) I focus on companion quests and "regional questlines", but skip all these fetch and search quests. Mostly the latter complete themselves when running around long enough in one area. But if there is something which requires jumping like a madman.... I ignore it. ;)

But this is still enough to make 200+ visible... :)
