Hi guys I've heard about a lot of people getting romance blocked due to a bug where the gender of your Male character is identified in game as female.
The reason I ask is I don't want all my playtime wasted only to discover a bug has prevented me from romancing Cassandra for example? Anyone know how to identify if it is afffecting me, I'm in Haven at the moment 7 hours in,

Not that the romances are unimportant to the story or that you shouldn't care about them, but just how would that make all your playtime be wasted.
If the game sees your character as female, you'll want to make that character your Sera-romance character, and use your next character to romance Cassandra. Now, if you absolutely must romance Cassandra first, then yes you should go ahead and make that second character now, and come back to the one you're currently playing some time later. Either way, it's not wasted time, it's all good

If the game thinks your a female, then the NPC will call you a female aka she instead of he etc. A easy way to know if you have the bug is, when you go to Haven for the first time, save the game and talk with Cullen. There is a option to flirt with him, both male a female can flirt so do not worry. Then talk with him again and ask him about his love life (both males and females can ask this to Cullen), Cullen will give you a answer, then flirt with him again. If Cullen flirts back, then the game sees you as a female, if he rejects you, then the game game sees you like a male.
