Artificer - is it viable? And a poison question.

I really like the sound of the Artificer spec, mainly for role-play reasons. I was originally planning to go with a dual-wielder, but recent comments on the forums about melee rogues have made me doubt that idea. So... a couple of questions.

 

  1. I've heard rumours that ability damage is based off your weapon's dps rather than base weapon damage. Is this true? Also, does anyone have any idea if when dual wielding that weapon damage is based on one dagger, or both?
  2. With the above in mind, will an archer's traps do miles less damage compared to a dual wielders?
  3. Has anyone had any success with an Artificer build, whether ranged or not?
  4. Anyone have any advice on how to build one?

On a related note, does anyone know if poison damage stacks? i.e. each new hit adds even more damage over time, or whether it's just one "poisoned" state at once. And in general, what do people think about poison? Worth the investment?

Here is my 2 cents.

Currently playing an archer rouge on nightmare at level 14, i can only help with a few of these questions though. Hopefully our other rouge brethren can comment on the rest.

2. From my experience the bows, both crafted and not, actually have less dps than daggers, i would assume the traps would overall do less than doing melee. Maybe your experience is different though.

The extra question. The poisons DO NOT STACK. Usually when i apply poison, i will tab through the enemies until the duration is up to spread the damage. Its actually very effective in this manner. In my opinion the poisons are well worth it even against enemies that are immune do to the upgrade that increases your overall damage when active.

I can confirm that poison doesn't seem to stack. No matter how many times you hot the same enemy, you only get one green (poison) damage counter, and the health seems to drop accordingly.

 

Probably necessary, I mean each hit is like 400% over time.

Anybody tried an Artificer while Friendly Fire is on?  I'm concerned all their mines and stuff will make it impossible since they may kill your own party?  Or is it pretty easy to avoid?
