It looks like DAI is suffering from the Jack of all trades master of none syndrome. In trying please newer action orientated players while still trying to appease old school tactical DAO fans Bioware has ended up truly satisfying neither party.

So that got me thinking; What if Bioware created two separate franchises, both of them set in the DA universe?

That way BW could go full on go for broke in both directions without compromising gameplay. One franchise could stick to and expand upon the original DAO tactical style of gameplay while on the other hand more action orientated guys like myself would LOVE a game set in the DA universe but with a Shadow of Mordor like level of twitch based combat.

I would even take a game world that was half the size of DAI if they could somehow nail the combat.

What do you guys think?

Honestly we have indies now making the kind of tactical RPG fans of Origins want. If Bioware want to make action games then they should just plunge into that pool with both feet and make great action games.

It can't be really separated into two different franchises without breaking the lore. It's like trying to split a chicken into two parts just because it is a bird but not a bird enough

Though I wouldn't mind if with big DA games like DA:O and DA:I smaller ones were created. Not cash-grabs but actual games just concentrated on different stories and regions. Like the Last court (but in a form of a video game). DA2 would be a great example if it was made this way - not Dragon Age 2 but rather Dragon Age: Champion of Kirkwall, telling us a story of a small city and its characters

I must say I agree on this one. Fully action RPG ala Jade Empire in DA setting would work very well for me instead of mishmash of genres that DAI is trying to be. Go one way or the other, don't stay in the middle. The middle is for mediocre things.

Somebody give Mike Laidlaw a Jade Empire sequel he can work on and hand DA back to somebody who doesn't want to butcher it and turn it into something it should never have been.

Realistically it's too late now, but that's how it should have worked.

DA:I > DA:O

Without a doubt and by miles, best game Bioware has made for a long time.

I agree that it is a confused game. Wants to be everything at the same time: Skyrim for the map size and exploration, it wants to be DAO for the epic threat/proportions and lengthy discussions, it wants to be DA2 for the non-stop action, it wants to be a little TW2 with the loot scanning, action RPG combat and political conflicts with Tevinter being pretty much Nilfgaard - the big bad empire... This is a confused game and it leaves me confused as to how I feel about it. It does not have its own identity.

Tevinter "The Big Bag Empire" has been aroundnlong before DAI and TW2. Unless you really mean to say that while Dragon Age:Origins was being made they were trying top copy The Witcher. ;)

On a more serious note, it'll be a sad, sad day in gaming if Bioware turns into another AAA Action-This-Instanst-Satisfaction-That. -Sigh- But that might be where the money is I guess....but didn't DAII sell less copies?

I honestly would rather have another DA:I with slightly better PC controls/Tactical Controls still intact on consoles/Slightly better story than a full on action game.

We have plenty of..well...all kinds of devs making actiony RPGs.

It is confused because everyone keeps saying they want everything in a Dragon Age game, so they get everything and then people are confused to why the game is confused.

Could it work? maybe, but DA isn't all that established as a high selling game to have 2 different Teams working on 2 different iterations of it. Even Assassin's and CoD try to do it, but with something that sells alot more alot faster, and doesn't have different gameplay style at heart between the new and the previous game.

In my opinion they should have sticked to DA Origins gameplay and dark fantasy style, back when the Doctors were still the bosses, and no EA. It got the best scores, and mostly above DA Inquisition scores, but since it didn't sell that much, cause its not a style that sells as much as a COD or AC, EA came in, forced a DA2 out within 8 months to a year from the first one, and it was vastly agreed by most that really enjoyed the first game and praised it, that it was a big step back. But hey, EA is about the numbers, and so, unfortunatly and as much as it pains me to say it, I don't think they'll go back to Dragon Age Origins style and gameplay.

I actually don't think they would be able to make a 'great' action game if they wanted to.

Bioware are currently strong in a niche which is (almost) all their own, but I don't think they have enough talent or the right type of talent to step out of their comfort zone and go toe to toe with actual action games. I think if they ever stepped too far away from the their niche, they'd rapidly find themselves out of their depth.

As for the OP: no I don't think they should or will split the franchise, they just need to treat all platforms with the attention they deserve. Honestly, how difficult is it over the course of a ~3 year project to factor in the time and resources required to create an additional set of (completely standard) camera controls and a menu UI suitable for mouse and keyboard? That should be kid's stuff for a developer of Bioware's experience.

Bioware use to be all about story telling.  Telling a story that involved the player, to the point were the player could even influence the story.

Now Bioware is Bioware in name only.  The product is now how to sell to the most people, in the shortest possible time.  This title makes that very clear.

There aren't a lot of full 3d action rpg's with truly great combat. In fact the only two I can think of are ME3 and Dragon's Dogma.

I consider Shadow of Mordor to be a straight up action game because it doesn't have the depth of choices, characters and story of something like Dragon Age.

I would like to see a DA game that kept all of the depth of choices, characters and story of Dragon Age paired with a great twitch based combat system like Mordor or even dialed back a bit to ssomething like Dragon's Dogma.

I think a game like that would be hugely successful but it would probably alienate a big chunk of the DAO diehards. That's why I suggest giving them their own game(or give us action guys our own game, however you want to put it).

The DA universe is big enough to handle multiple franchises, each with their own set of characters and storylines so I don't think continuity would be a problem.

I think dai is a amazing game. Only has some slight controller/camera problems. The story, storytelling and world is amazing. The gameplay holds a good standard even if it has issues. I really hope they dont change it up to much. Bioware and cd project are the only developers that are currenlty keeping me immersed and intrested in playing through the games. I cant play games anymore where you cant make choices that affect the story, and i dont want just textbased stories either! Need voiceover and cinematics!

you are stating your opinion in the first sentence alone. I am completely satisfied and I know a lot of people who are as well...

To indulge you, the first problem is budget... that is essentially making two games, getting the same amount in return... That is not a good business decision

that reason alone pretty much kills your idea.

I get what you mean, however they did improve Mass Effect 3's shooter credibility quite a bit over time. Maybe Inquisition is the step between and the next game is where they make it feel like a good action game, it's hard to say. All I know is the weird hybrid thing doesn't really work.

I totally agree with what you are saying and I hope it's true about the way the future of the DA franchise might go.

To me the combat in ME2 felt like something that was from an rpg developer that was delving into a direction that they weren't really familiar with. However the combat in ME3 imo is up there with the best in the business.

Knowing this, I giuess I believe it is not entirely impossible for the DA team to eventually make a game in the franchise with really good combat.

It is confused because everyone keeps saying they want everything in a Dragon Age game, so they get everything and then people are confused to why the game is confused.

I do hear people saying they like it after the fact, but were there people asking for Dragon Age to be turned into an Action RPG?

Yep, action gamers kept filling the DA:O boards with posts saying how dull and boring RPG simulations mechanics were and how much better it would be if "they could feel the weight of the blows" with each button press, how pressing every button is "alive and interesting" as opposed to boring auto-attack and how much they wanted direct control of the characters to feel "connected to the gameplay". Apparently Bioware decided to deliver.

Please no? I agree, Mass Effect 3 had the best gameplay by far and its multiplayer was fantastic, but look at the RPG elements. 33% less dialogue choices in all situations, auto-dialogue for days, only a couple of big choices with very obvious paragon/renegade options rather than any even remotely difficult decisions, and that mess that was the ending. Bioware's strength has always been in its characters, the customisable protag, and its story, in that order (IMO, of course, but I feel like many would agree). I for one can deal with a bit of dodgy combat if it means I get to meet characters like Dorian, Cassandra and Varric. I can deal with it if it means I get to have lots of options to personalise my character how I like, to have some interesting decisions to make, and to have a decent story ending (though I haven't finished DAI yet; we'll see if it has that).

No. Then they would do two bad games instead of one niche game... Ubi tried to do two AC this year, and both failed IMO, one because didn't had a world to make justice to the story and one because didn't had the story to make justice to the world.

I actually like Inquisition. Well, I dislike the whole mess they did with the attributes and the radial menu, but the combination of action rpg and a whole thing driven by a story is something I like. I don't want to spend millenia trying to get right some galactic legendary weapon, I do not want to be playing an RTS (there's already starcraft for that) and I certainly do not want tonnes upon tonnes of filler tasks that serve to no purpose but overextending a bad game like in Skyrim.... What I want is Inquisition. Just like I loved Mass Effect because had a bit of both but didn't dived fully into any of them.

There are people who set the whole thing in casual and just want to enjoy the story in many BW games. Not myself, but many people do, and Inquisition serves them right. And for that matter a I loved it too.
