TL;DR If you're seeing the save icon on the bottom right corner of the screen spinning indefinitely, don't start playing and just terminate your game and try again because the game is not auto-saving, and manual saving causes a hard lock forcing you to terminate the game. Might be a good idea to manually save at the beginning of your game session just to check that it works.
I learned this the hard way and lost almost 2 hours of progress.
The save icon was spinning since I loaded into the game. I figured it was just a display bug and carried on, until after about 2 hours I figured I would create a manual save just to be safe.
I got to the "verifying available space" message but it never went away, and after a good 10 minutes I gave up and terminated the game. I loaded the game again, which crashed on boot and I had to cold boot my Xbox to get the game to fix itself. Once I got to the game again, I was back at my last manual save, 2 hours earlier...
Absolutely gutted and quite disappointed in the quality of the game on Xbox One (not that I can compare it to other platforms, but I assumed on consoles the games are relatively stable). This isn't the first time I've had the saves stop functioning but it wasn't until now that it caused me to lose a significant amount of progress. And if this wasn't bad enough, I have encountered 3-4 seemingly random crashes in the open world as well which, while not detrimental to gameplay, are annoying since I have to endure the super long loading screens all over again.
