For OCD completionist types, what is the best order to clear maps? (Or at least clear as much as possible).

There isn't one. You should be zipping between zones a lot.

Um, he answered your question. The best thing is to keep switching, because some maps have content that's meant for later.

As a general rule, follow where the main storyline takes you. But it's not like an MMO where you earn a new map on level up.

As a OCD player, I try to finish all the doable quests in a zone then move between zones.

1. Hinterlands: I have done every quest aside from a certain mob that shares its name with this franchise. I left Hinterlands at level 9

2. Storm Coast: Do all the quests untill I am level 12-13, then I will go back to Hinterlands kill this beast and go back and finish Storm Coast.

3. Val Royeaux.

This is how I am doing it. Risien is correct that you will be hopping around zones, some quests can not be done untill you progress the main storyline, some quests need you to be a certain level and others need you to have a certain approval level with your companions.

DA:I is not like alot of RPG´s where you stay in one zone and do all the sidequests in one go, the game basicly forces you to move your bum to other zones.

EDIT: In Hinterlands there are some level 12 mobs, you can skip those or try and kill them. I used tactics as a level 8 player to take them down, so on Normal they are killable.

I wouldn't mind knowing this. I understand you have to jump between zones, but there are some major plot areas that come up every now and then, it would be useful to know if doing them effect anything else in the game.

Not to mention some idea of what level you should be in a zone for. I found Hinterlands was fine up till level 7 or so, then I could come back at 12, but all anyone ever says is its suitable for 4-12, when really it isn't any use for 8-11.

I enjoy the game not really prescribing an "ideal" progression route. The story itself is set up in a way where you gather resources and assets from different areas and travel back and forth between those a lot.

After Hinterlads, I went to the swamp (Mire?), because I thought saving the captured Inquisition soldiers should be a priority. It was hard as hell! I still have nightmares about fighting the apostate with everyone but Solus dead and no potion left (playinh on "hard"). :D I still made it somehow and felt like a badass!

I can only recommend doing the zones in an order which makes sense for your Inquisitor.

Everyone seems to handle it differently i just play an area until enemies get much higher leveled and then move on until i can't progress anywhere then i do the main storyline quests. I left Hinterlands at level 4 and went recruiting and doing some of the storyline things then went back to clean up at level 8 in Hinterlands. I found it easier to go back in some cases especially for rifts because some drop out level 12 monsters in areas you unlock early on.

For me it's gone something like this:

Hinterlands till lvl six.

Headed to Val Royeaux.

Back to Haven to discuss events that occurred above.

Headed to Hinterlands to fetch a party companion the option to fetch had opened for.

Went to Redcliffe/Hinterlands.

Headed to the Storm Coast to do a few things.

Headed to Val Royeaux to fetch a party companion.

Now back on the Storm Coast to do some more things.

To be honest on my first playthrough i just slipped up on so many sones. Exalted Plains and Hissing Waters come to mind, but by the end after mucking up everything i was still like level 23 and way to overlvled for the main quest. So i think you will do fine whatever way you do them.

But i would start with Hinterlands till about 7 go Val Royeaux, then recruit companions, head over to Fallow Mire and Storm Coast, do most of them and proceed to Hinterlands again and finish it up.

Well, I haven't finished yet but this has been my order so far (iirc):

  • Hinterlands: My first 15 hours of gameplay were spent here. After that I went to the locations below but returned from time to time to access new zones and fight higher level enemies (there are a couple of high level rifts and a dragon but nothing you can't defeat at level 10).
  • Fallow Mire
  • Forbidden Oasis
  • Storm Coast
  • Exalted Plains

Based on my brother's advice, I should next go to:

  • Western Approach
  • Emprise du Lion
  • Hissing Wastes

That's all I've got for you so far.

The best order, to play the zones, in order not to over trivialize the game (as an OCD Completionist myself) is the following:

  1. Hinterlands until you're level 5
  2. Val Royeaux along with recruiting of some companions
  3. Get to Redcliffe in the Hinterlands, get a quick trip to the Storm Coast and reach lvl 6 tops
  4. Continue with the main storyline as the content is tailored for level 4 to 7, do that until you reach Skyhold

There's a lot of epicness and wonderful things on these beginning quests that kinda resembles one of the ashamefully short games they're used to throw at us nowadays. All of that takes you roughly 30 hours of game time (at least it did to me, on Hard, and getting deep to know with all of my companions).

I don't know about anything further as I'm just one step before, I suppose, Skyhold on my PC Playthrough, while my brother reached it on his Xbox One playthrough and he's quite after it now.

As an OCD Completionist I feel kinda awkward and uneasy to leave things to do in an area, but areas are dynamic and will be influenced by your actions, and you're supposed to clear some content at the appropriate level.

I don't want to add more details as I don't want to ever break the NO SPOILERS rule here.

Cheers!
