I want Vivienne to be next to my tank, dealing damage – so I set her Spirit Blade as a preferred action but most of the time she stands back and using her basic ranged attack :( She starts using here abilities only when someone approaches her. Is there a way to make her usable without telling here what to do every battle?

You might have her tactics set to "Defend", which means she will mainly (as far as i can tell) stay out of the fight. If so try switching it to Follow yourself or your tank. Also, you may have her Mana Threshold set too high, meaning she will auto attack most of the time.

However, this could just be terrible AI, I personally am getting tired of my Viv running into clear danger lol.

I don't think the AI they are using really works for the spec classes.  Assassin rogue, for example, works really poorly with the AI, as Cole dodges nothing.

Knight Enchanted is beastly if your controlling it but the AI is clueless and will neither take advantage of its best damage output skills or its best defensive abilities. I highly recommend not using it unless you intend to control that character or super micromanage it.

Knight Enchanters require constant player input due to how useless the Tactics screen is in this game. I would recommend against using Vivienne unless you're willing to take control of her very frequently.

Party AI is fricking useless, I have to constantly update my ranged characters' positioning otherwise they always end up in melee range. Would love to know how you get her to stay back heh.

Yeah the lack of tactics hurts me.

Varric keeps running into melee range.

Just...WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS VARRIC? I CAN'T EVEN HEAL!

In this game, AI stands for Articificial Imbecility.

I have no trouble getting Vivienne to spam Spirit Blade as a KE. The issue I currently have is at my lvl, there are no staffs giving enough damage to 'allow' her to leech enough barriers for that to matter in the slightest. 30% of crappy dmg is only about 5% of her total barriers, which quickly results in her immediate death on nightmare. I'm pretty disappointed at that but I just need a better staff and to focus it as much on pure damage output as I possibly can... I'm just not at that point atm, sadly.

But yeah how you have her setup in behaviors as well as what spells she has favored will quickly determine if she ever uses it. If it's the only skill she has favored (besides Barrier) and shes on follow/target tank, she'll rush right into the fray with out a care. Just make sure she leechs enough barriers before you go that or you'll have a very dead Viv. <_<

I suspect the strongest party invovles using Viv as your controlled character and letting the other characters including the inquistor run on auto. Tanks, archers and other mages run much better on auto.

My inquistor is a Dagger Rouges and I keep having to swithcf between Viv and the Inquistor. Much easer to handel without Viv in the party, but if playing on nightmare you probably want to include her in the more difficult fights.

Idk my vivvy spams her spirit blade constantly. Only time she uses her staff aa is when the enemy is weak to it. For example undead skeleton weak to fire Viv has fire staff will prioritize using staff since it's weak to it rather than spirit blade

What level are you (or what level is Vivienne)? Spirit Blade alone will never be enough to sustain a constant barrier.

Try this.

Spirit blade: Preferred
Fade cloak: Enabled

All other skills disabled :P

All there needs to be is a tactics option to disable basic weapon attack. KE can get by just fine 90% of the time just popping Barrier then spamming Spirit Blade. It's when they start using anything else that things go pear shaped. Disabling weapon attack would be all that is required to have a functioning KE AI.

For Dragons, Disable Fade Step if among the options, and use this manually. Set Spirit Blade to Preferred.

Follow Cassandra works fairly well for my game.

I use her as part of my Dragon hunting team and she works just fine. SB on preferred along with barrier and whatever elemental attack the Dragon is weak to. Behaviour set to follow either my main tank or Controlled character. She runs right in and keeps barriers up throughout the fight.

I think the AI is actually better than in previous games as once you work out the wrinkles it works well with many fewer character-selected rules. I rarely have to intervene. I'm especially impressed at how good the AI is at exploiting combos/detonators.

This is pretty much how I used her.  I had barrier (she was my only other mage) and Spirit Blade set to preferred, and everything else was disabled.  She waded into the frontlines pretty well.

Disable all her ranged spells. Cast them manually if required. I even had her barrier disabled, but obviously I had a second mage. Vivienne's barrier was for emergencies :P.

I doubt you can make Vivienne work as a KE as the sole mage. You can't really do this if you're the KE yourself and sole mage neither, unless you're completely geared out. In which case anything works.

I have been using this for my Viv and it works great.
https://www.reddit.c...s_build_knight/

The following skills should be set to Preferred in the Tactics settings. Barrier, Spirit Blade, and Revival. This ensures that the AI Vivienne attacks with Spirit Blade, which keeps her in range of the melee fighter, so she can spam Barrier. And should anyone go down, she'll prioritize Revival.

Also remember to set the Behavior settings to Follow Vivienne

Issue I have is that often if just out of melee range she'll resort to standard (Staff) weapon attack rather than move a little closer and use Spirit Blade. Even with all other abilities disabled except Barrier and Spirit Blade on Preferred. Thus my desire to see an option to disable standard Staff attack. It doesn't take too much to move her into melee again but it's something I have to watch which would be an easy thing in the AI to fix.

Try setting her to defend herself, rather than follow.
