There are bodies for this quest? Fascinating! I always fast travel to the Dalish camp from Skyhold and walk straight to the area and speak to the mage with the sad mustache just fine. But I had a bug on my Cole's amulet quest on my 5th play through that I never encountered before. So I feel all of your pain on this!

Well it seems like this can be done multiple ways but for points in Solas's book here's what I did:
I took Solas along and was told what's going on and what to do. Solas tells me I need to activate the gems instead of killing the monster. i agreed to not kill the monster but activate the gem. I think I just walked over to a gem and pressed and held the action button until it was confirmed activated by Solas. Once all four (or three?) were activated the quest was at an end where the pride Demon became a spirit of a woman seeking forgiveness. After that I came across the group again then it was decision time: kill or spare group.
