I've got ME1 for Steam, and am trying to play through it before ME2 comes out. Unfortunately, I'm running into an issue I've seen discussed all over the Internet, but with no solutions. That issue is that both my CPU cores are maxed out the entire time ME1 is running. This maxed CPU causes stutters and chops in the gameplay and cutscenes of the game, making it difficult and annoying to play.
I've got a Core 2 Duo 6600 and a GeForce MX 260 and 3G of RAM on WinXP 32, so I should easily be able to play this game smoothly.
I've tried disabling/reducing every video option to lowest, and it makes no change.

Has there been any fix/workaround found for this problem yet?

I would suggest trying to validate your game files to make sure nothing is corrupt. Then I would update your drivers. Then report back :)

I have the exact same problem as him and did exactly what you said, but no dice. I even finally found my DVD version that I thought I had lost and tried the game through there, but that also didn't work; after a half-hour or an hour the game would suddenly max-out my cores and freeze (and if I don't shut it down with task manager it eventually BSoDs my computer).

My specs are different, but I know it's not hardware-related because I run all my other games, including dragon age (despite the memory leak issues), with no problems at all. It's only this game that maxes out my cores.

Spec:
AMD X2 3.2 gHz dual-core processor
NVidia GeForce 9800 GT - 1 gig video memory
2 gigs RAM DDR2

....So yeah, I'm just as stumped as the TC is about this (though at least I know it's not just randomly freezing with no signs about why it was like I originally thought, since this topic made me check my GPU usage). Does anyone have any tips?

2 things to try.

Go to malwarebytes.org and download malwarebytes anti-malware and run it. its free and is the best antiviral program ive ever seen, it misses nothing and catchs ALOT that others miss.

Go to ccleaner.com and download ccleaner. Run the registry cleaner portion of it, backup your registry when it prompts, and allow it to fix all the problems it finds.

See if either of those help you.

also make sure nothing else is running in the background (except for Steam, of course) like ANti virus, and other unnecessary apps that run int he background.

Ok guys, I just thought of something and so far it's working.

I noticed that everyone here has a multi-core processor (including me), so I started up Mass Effect, opened task manager, went to "processes" and right-clicked the "masseffect.exe" file. I chose "choose affinity" in the drop-down menu and only allowed it to use one of my cores for processing.

While the currently-running game immediately stuttered (no doubt due to the sudden reduction), the cpu usage instantly went down from 70 percent to 40 percent, and when I restarted the game and loaded my save everything seems to be working (and the cpu usage is still AT MOST 50 percent). I've only been playing for ten minutes so far, but not even the regular hiccups I had before are occurring now, so hopefully this will solve the problem for you guys.

I'll update whether or not I get frozen in a bit.

Yep, it completely works now! No randomly-long loading, no graphical hiccups, nothing!

I have the same issue with me2,did what *Deiser* did but on game restart it still uses 2 cpu's and the game gets very glitchy when I do this. my cpu temp goes up to about 95 degrees C then it just shuts down.Any advice on how to get the cpu usage down or the temperature??? PLZ!
