Hmm, a dodging mechanic? For whom? Universal?
To be quite honest,
I prefer the Mage not get a dodge ability. There's a reason why other classes exist. Distinction must be maintained
Dodging is more for the rogue warrior classes whom already have that ability.
But, if such a thing were to miraculously make it, I'll entertain the discussion.
If you mean incorporating dodge for mages. I think it should be a side step that covers some distance - not a roll/dive dodge.
And also, this mechanic, as long as it has a cool down or some kind of management to prevent spamming - I'll welcome it. Hopping out of trouble all the time with no repercussions kills the tactics side of the game. Don't want a Rambo fest here. Not saying that's what you are suggesting.
Maybe whenever you use it, it pulls from your mana pool could help alleviate such things.
That said, mages whom do not have rogue/warrior hybrids going on - should not have this level of athleticism to where they are diving/rolling out of trouble.
A side step is more agreeable I feel, it keeps it respectable to the fantasy sim. Also, this side step should cover some reasonable ground but not at the level of the rogue/warrior class dodge/roll ability. As I mentioned in my opening paragraph, distinction of classes must be maintained, therefore, roll/dive naturally covers more ground than a sidestep.
Not only for mages, I was thinking to a normal dodge movement and not to a proper skill, like in many other games (oblivion, kingdom of amalur, etc.)
