So I try to create a little challenge for myself and start most games in "hard". I just stated the hinterlands (characters are level 3) and I'm attempting to tackle my very first encounter. 3 lyrium hunters in a field with crates and such. And I'm getting destroyed. Like, they can kill me in two or 3 hits and I'm lucky if I get one of them before my "journey ends". Been using barrier and the tac cam to micromanage and reposition. Doesn't matter. How is there no challenge? No tactics? If I just let my team charge into the enemy I die even faster. When I micromanage I last longer. But I still can't get past them.

Those lyrium hunters are lvl8?

Just get some better gear. Clear easier goals on the maps until your tank has warcry and turn the blade.

Those hunters are Level 8 and you are most likely Level 3. That's not you seeking challenge, that is just being stupid. One does not simply challenge character 5 levels above them, especially when they are at Level 3.

Oh. Lol. So that's the number on the shield icon. Haha. Whoops. They're so close to your starting point though!

It is a deleveled world my dear Mikell. What that means is enemies do not scale with you. They are their own characters.

Right. I'm actually liking the combat a lot so far (playing on PS4). I'm in agreement though, party AI seems kinda retarded, appears to override commands I give in tac cam. Gonna turn the AI off and try a combo of microing in tac cam and switching between characters, see what that does.

I really don't think this is all as bland/bad as people are saying it is on CONSOLES (too addicted to button mashing), but I get went PC players are upset, especially with how they've described the control scheme.

It seems by trying to satisfy the tactical tendencies of PC gamers and the button mashing tendencies of console gamers, they may have disappointed both

Maaybe. I like to think that a tactical action game is quite feasible. For DAI, I think the problem is instead....

If you prefer action games, then...

1. I want to play in action mode.

2. But the AI is fairly dumb AND BIOWARE REMOVED TACTICS WHY.

3. Because of this, I am virtually forced to use the tactical cam to micromanage party members once in a while.

4. But the tactical cam is badly positioned (too close) extremely limited (no queueing???) and buggy.

5. So now I want to play in action mode. Go back to step 1.

If you prefer tactical games, simply start at step 4.

By error (i didn't know how about enemy levels), i actually farmed quite a lot of 8s with my group lvl 4. It was just really, really, really, slow, but definitly possible even for a new comer on nightmare.

The game itself is pretty easy even on nightmare, but broken controls are broken.

It isn't easy. Well it is but you have to find the magic formula for winning. There aren't a lot of different ways to skin this cat. It feels like until you accept the right way you won't succeed without a lot of overhead.

The fact that you have areas that are so dissimilar in level challenges also will create a lot of difficulty issues. That rift right next to the Farms Camp is insane since most people seem to reach it at about level 5 and then get slobber knocked because it is right in the middle of a lot of other acceptable challenges. The lack of feedback outside of tactical cam means that I suspect a lot of players never know why they are getting wiped.

For a delevled world 90% of my enemies sure do have the tendency to level up with my inquisitor. This one time, I killed a level 10 bear and hit level 11. The next bear I ran into was level 11 too.

Funny how that works. Maybe it's a Nightmare feature?

Yeah, I found that rift, beat the first wave, stunned the second and was doing okay, but after a couple minutes I started to get wrecked, chugged a few potions but was running low so I decided to run. I brought up the radial menu, canceled all actions, had everyone disengage, then took control of my inquisitor and it actually worked really good. I think those radial menu commands will help the AI not be so dumb in certain situations.

But yeah, I work the camera fine in tac mode, you can scroll around and change the view angle so I don't mind that's it's kinda zoomed in. No queuing of commands though. That makes no sense. Normal attacks have like 5 or 6 animations before restarting (like, mages end with that staff slam, looks really cool) so they could have easily let you queue a regular attack that goes through one full set of animations, then line up other stuff like defensive spells, potions chugs and movement. Then if the queue is empty go back to regular attacks. Would still be fun to take control of different characters and play action style, but in the meantime your buddies would be doing a specific set of somethings (or just regular attacks) instead of...whatever the hell the weird AI feels like doing.

I can confirm Sevitan7's remark as regards courtesy critters levelling with the player for PC on normal difficulty.

Some things are a bit odd with the levelling, though. About one minute after my level-4 team entered the hinterlands we met a team of two level-12 outcasts, one of them a two-hander enforcer. The latter was a tough nut to crack, since we had neither defence, nor armour, nor sufficient guard (let alone things like Barrier). A few minutes later we stumbled down a waterfall and found two level-12 demons guarding a rift, critters we hadn't even seen before. Dispatched those, four level-12 demons appeared and we were basically toast.

Apart from that it was plain sailing since tricky fights are rare and you get to choose whether to fight them then and there or not. DAO was different since pretty much all fights were carefully set up tactically and required precision battlefield control (which is extremely tricky in DAI, because of its various 'peculiarities').

P.S.: I'm not saying that I don't like level-12 encounters in a level-4 zone. I love the idea - bring'em on! It's just that there wake-up call was rather brutal. :D

I actually thought that it was kinda hard at first. I got owned over and over so many times with my poor mage. But since level 11 and the Knight Enchanter specialization I do believe it became easy. With Dorian and Blackwall I've walked over every enemy without dying since except for one time that a dragon pulped us. I'm playing on hard but I may turn into Nightmare if thing keep like this.

I miss having the chance to set my own points on skill. In Origins I always raised my dexterity along with the main attribute of the class and had a good time evading damage. Now I have to see how my life falls to half with one single blow of a templar.

Also, do anyone knows how to raise the mana pool? It's so frustrating being unable to chain high-damage spells.

Base on my experience. I play on nightmare mode, with duel-weried rogue. rarely go to tactical mode(because I just hate to flash my screen back and forth). Here is my few tips.

1. alwasy have your weapons and armors upgrade to the best as possible.

2. bring restoration potion help a lot, otherwise you need constantly go to camp to refresh your potion. I use it on everyone, even my mage.

3. always try to have your tank take the arrog. let your tank attack first.

4. always focus on their ranged and mage first. they do A LOT more damage.

5. if there is aoe enemy. STAY AWAY, only attack after they finish their aoe. their aoe just weigh too op. (ignore it if your are not duel-weired rogue). have your mage cc it help.

6. if there are many ranged enemy, like 4-5 archers or mages. try to stay as far as you can, and find hiding, use your ranged to pick them up 1 by 1, full draw +first blood archer really helps.

7. fighting rift, click on the rift for few sec cast, it will do tons of damage to any demons it spawned and has them stunned also, be sure no enemy is attacking you before you start it, as it will disrupt you, it will become avaible once a while, so, just check it frequently.

hope this helps.

Merengues 1945, for boss fights you could stock lyrium pots instead of hp regens but in general it looks like boosting willpower is the only option (gear, passive ability bonusses).

Yeah speaking of gear, people have been saying they're mad they can't apply attribute points but can't you adjust them quite a bit with crafted/customized gear?
