Something just happened, and I went up a "power" point. I look in the Attributes, to the right of inquisition rank and see it, however, I have no idea what it's for, how I got it, or anything. Please explain it's purpose, thank you.

Power is a currency you gain for doing quests and what not in the game. You spend power via the War Table to unlock new areas and progress the story.
