Are all the mage specs decent for a Nightmare/FF playthrough? I've been planning on Rift Mage but I've heard good things about Knight Enchanter so now I'm wondering if they're all perfectly viable or not.
Secondly, can you spec your companions into whichever specialty you want or are they locked in to the default ones like Solas/Rift Mage, Vivienne/Knight Enchanter, and Dorian/Necromancer?

Knight Enchanters are pure and utter exellence. Have yet to try Necromancy.
They are locked in their own specialisations.

No, not yet. Currently focused on my Tempest playthrough.
Guess I will be the guinea pig. I'm probably starting over as a mage instead of my 2handed warrior since I had been planning Reaver but Iron Bull is already a reaver and he sounds like more fun to drag around than Vivienne or Solas. Or I could bring both Blackwall and Cassandra for extra tanky action.
Too many party members I want to bring with me!
