The necromancy tree

I just reset Dorian to my Necro liking, ha ha.  It's a fun one, and overall the years I've played RPG DnDs, I think Haste is one of the most useful of spells ever.  Old versions use to age you, which really didn't matter, but it was a cool side effect.

Besides everything rift mage, I love freezing enemies them shattering them with mind blast. Mages are so much fun!

Fade Step was the hands down winner for me... I just can't imagine playing as a mage and not learning that ability.

I love Fade Step - except for when I send myself flying off into the abyss. I have this horrible habit of using it when I'm way to close to the edge of a pit or a cliff, etc. Anyway, it hearkens back to my days as a Vanguard with Biotic Charge, so yeah, it was sort of a given that I was going to roll with it - heh.

lol... yeah, I've also gotten a bit over-zealous with Fade Step and wound up too far away from the battle to actually do anything useful.  That's pretty rare though, because I usually go through an enemy and then come back a second time like a slingshot... I don't play with damage numbers on, but I think that hurts them twice... it seems like it did, but who knows.

Anyway, Fade Step is an awesome offensive tool... a high damage ice attack that can hit multiple targets, possibly multiple times, and lets you zip around the battlefield like Wally West.  What's not to like?

Fade(Frost) Step

Spirit(Defending) Blade

Energy Barrage(Bombardment)

All easily won me over.

Haha, yeah, the most hilarious series of falls was when I was fighting some darkspawn in Emprise du Lion and zipped into the same pit like four to six times because it was dark and I ended up being slightly disoriented each time after being teleported out of the pit.

I did pick up the secondary talent for Fade Step that says you do extra damage when zipping through frozen/chilled targets, so I like using it when I can - assuming that my tank hasn't already shattered the enemy and deprived me of the joy of using Fade Step that is. I pretty much went full frost and threw in necromancer - gotta admit that Walking Bomb is pretty fun, too.

Fade Step and the Knight Enchanter abilities. It's everything I wanted Arcane Warrior to be, but better. And unfortunately, since I chose Knight Enchanter on my first go, I don't think I'll ever play any other specialization. It's a ton of fun stabbing things with a giant spirit blade as a mage.

I miss the force tree from DAII.  It was extremely satisfying to pull all the mobs together and slam them into the ground.  The rift mage tree has some similar powers, but it's still not the same.

I like most of the ice spells; Fade step and the ice wall (tho I find that mostly useless but I had it active for awhile). Oh, and the snow storm; I love casting that. The animation for it is nice.

As an avid mage player,I like the screen of Particle effect death. Something which I did often in DA:O, what I have found is You need Barriers, with Ice, Lightning, and Necro to truly get the everything in the effect area is now dead. Granted I'm not anywhere near the god of Death I made in DA:O, but I'm working the kinks out.

Being able to turn into a High Dragon is definitely up there.

Bioware, o Bioware why won't you let turn me into a dragon? Mages are overpowered anyway, you might as well embrace it.

I like Winter's Grasp from the ice tree, in the fire tree I like the little fireball and fire mine, wall of fire is pretty useful too, overall I prefer the storm tree, chain lighting kicks ass, energy barrage is cool and pretty good, lightning bolt is nice, also static cage + mark of the rift = mass murder. For specializations, Rift Mage is ok and it has the best super move imo though it should be a fire spell, Necro has several neat passives and I love walking bomb but I don't like haste as a super move, Knight Enchanter is pretty cool, magic sword that can deflect fireballs from dragons and the phasing ability that does like 10x weapon damage when you unphase inside an enemy, reviving everyone is nice but I'd prefer a super move that's an attack tbh

I'm having fun using all of the different magics. I like using Fade Step to get away when I'm surrounded by enemies. I like that chain lightning can damage multiple foes at once. And freezing enemies in place is great when you need a second to reposition. Immolate is also great at causing damage from a distance.

But does anyone find that one type of magic is better at dealing the most damage? (Ice, fire, storm, or spirit?) My first playthrough was archer and my long shot dealt as high as over 5000 points in one shot by the time I neared the end of the game (depending on certain circumstances of course). Which mage ability can do this? I'm on my second PT as mage and haven't even gotten a specialty picked yet. I'm trying to see which will be most vital later on.

There are few things better than casting Static Cage followed by an Energy Barrage that procs Hidden Blades.

Primal school and blood magic, with the arcane mastery and battlemage add on. With pieces of spirit, entropy and creation schools. Boom, unstoppable!

True mage abilities of DA.

Without a healing spell, Barrier is the most important. I take the first spell in all the elements except that stupid fire spell, I trade it in for Immolate? (The one that acts like fire bomb). Chain Lightning is the best AOE spell (low cost, high value). With the exception of upgraded Barrier, I don't use the Spirit spells (I play on Hard not Nightmare so...),  I usually grab the two passives from Immolate that get me down to the wall of fire spell.  In fact, I give all my mages the initial elemental spells and then put the remainder in their specializations.

If I want to be invincible, I specialize in Knight Enchantment.  Frankly, I was underwhelmed by the spells this time.

I really miss the old DA:II  Force spells. (Some of these spells bear the same name but don't do as well). I used to love being a controller mage in DA:II and use Anders as Nuker.

I also miss Origins Walking Bomb. Origins explosion was a hoot. The new one isn't nearly as much fun.

What I really like about DA:I is how they animated the mages when they do spells.

It never gets to Avatar levels though.... and nope, not those blue things, but the bald kid with the arrow on his head ;) ofcourse that's an animated series, but still. They gave each elemental power it's own set of martial arts moves. I don't think it gets any better:

Barrier.. I spam it like I spammed heal in DAO and DA2...
