So, based on Varric's companion mission we learn that Red Lyrium is infected with the Blight, and the blight can only affect stuff that is living. So using lyrium is essentially using life to fuel magic. That's big.
Bigger is the Primordial Thiag, where the Red Lyrium idol was found. If my memory serves there wasn't any other corrupted Lyrium down there, and that Thiag predated the Shaperate, and therefore the Blight. Does that mean that there was a Blighted Lyrium statue before the Magisters entered the Golden City? There are no Darkspawn in the Primordial Thiag, so they weren't the ones who Blighted the statue.
We have not seen the end of the Red Lyrium yet.
