Why didn't BioWare just remove the character-customisation completely?

While it wasn't as robust as the character creator in some games, such as Sims 3, it had merits that such games don't, such as the ability to create a character with a high degree of verisimilitude and realism.

When compared to other western RPGs such as Oblivion or Fallout 3, Mass Effect's character creator truly shines in its ease of use and elegance.

True that. In Oblivion and Fallout 3 your characters look like morons.

I'm assuming all the old hairstyles etc from ME1 are still there, for people who are carrying characters across games.

But did they add some new choices/styles to the character creation too?

I don't have near the rage as the OP on this subject, but I will admit it is a pretty pathetic CC..

Also, anyone who keeps bringing up how the engine is the limitation, check out this link, it's of a game called APB that also uses the UE3 engine, same as Mass Effect. disclaimer- I'm in no way asking for this games level of customization, simply pointing out it's not a limitation of the engine...

o.O omfg, I want that character creator... :| I think i would have fun with that even if THAT was the game.... :| just one big character creator...that video was awesome.

But I agree, that is a bit much in terms of expectations. I think Dragon Age did a great job, at least a vastly superior job. I sorta wish mass effect would have ripped them off a bit and made their character creator similiar to that. I understand some limitations but come on, you can do better bioware.

We can all agree though that if they made the CC in ME3 like this www.youtube.com/watch (minus the clothes of course) we'd all be lauding Bioware as the best thing since sliced bread

This level of customization should be standard in every game made from now on.  No exceptions.

That character creator is my number one request for Mass Effect 3.  BioWare can completely drop the Reapers storyline, but as long as they have this in I will buy the game.

Anyone that watches that video is always blown away, lol, I really can't wait for APB, like you said, even if the game is crap, I'll have that CC to mess with

And I agree, the ME CC is about as basic as it gets..  DA:O had better imo and it's using a more simplified engine (although Eclipse is newer)...

Dear god, if they had that system on Mass Effect *mouth waters*

My shepard would look kick ass, although Subject Zero and him would match very well (tatoos).

My renegade shepard was from earth in a gang, I believe that he probably obtained a gang tatoo (smoking gun)

Hehehe, +1 to realworlds on their creator and ambition for the game, if you read up on it, the concepts presented sound amazing, vox voice modification so you can make yourvoice lower or higher, proximity sound so people aren't in channels - they have to actually be near you to hear you, a music creator that allows you to make and play your own song when you kill an enemy player (they hear your song as well when killed, kind of a "pwned" sort of addition) among others.  Now it might be crap, I don't know, it is in Beta atm and is scheduled for release this spring... I'm getting it regardless though it does look like it will need a beast of a rig to run it, we'll see.

Back on ME, I would have been happy with just some new hair and eye styles, just a couple for both genders, I really don't understand what would have been so difficult as those additions are miniscule compared to directing a model driven scene or facial expression matching..  Oh well, at least they upped the res, slightly..

IMHO ME1 CC was far better than ME2's.
1. now you have to watch the full intro movie before you can
start the work - makes customization more time consuming
2. I find the new faces crappier (females have somehow rounder face - but I don't want a chinese! (no offense :)
3. after all the efforts put in making a good-looking char, Shep will look otherwise ingame (wtf?)
4. the biggest sore spot: my imported char looks otherwise than the
original! This is unforgivable. I've been fully satisfied with my ME1
char and now I have
to be contended with a messed-up clone...? [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/crying.png[/smilie]

Well, in the end, I didn't have to. I spent 3 nights total (approx. 12 hours) to make an almost perfect copy of my original Shepard (from scratch).

Last note: Bioware, if import isn't perfect, why can't I get my old char as a starting point and let me correct it? Please consider.

I wondered about that myself I thought I would be able to jump straight to my import characters face and make any tweaks I wanted to. It's what the developers had constantly said in interviews yet you can't do it you have to start over from scratch.

It's kind of ironic. Games like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fable, or Fallout 3 are considered some of the greatest games this generation, even of all-time. And they all have one common flaw. It takes a magician to make a custom character that does not look utterly ridiculous and completely stupid.

I did think they would improve the facial creation for ME2, but at the same time, it has to be difficult. Part of the reason it's odd making characters is because even if you make someone who looks decent on that creation screen, they all have the same emotions and facial expressions programmed into them, so they still have the same general emotional looks all the time.

I don't have a problem with it though. I use the default Shepard for my primary character in both games, and for my side characters I just roll with FemSheps, as I find custom females to work a lot better.

I like my ugly Shepard. And I made my FemShep look a littler better. She looks undead but she kind of is so its all cool.
