I actually don't think she's ugly at all. Plain Jane, yeah. But not ugly.
In some of the other screenshots she even looks mildly pretty. Like, the type of mild pretty that could grow on you.

People have been doing this since there have been romances in video games. Your BG2 halfling might have used a (male) dwarven avatar, but Anomen was still sniffing around her. Even NWN2 had its share of unfortunate love interests. The Frostbite engine can tell dwarves from humans... but it isn't sophisticated enough to evaluate aesthetics.
But yeah, it's still funny. In a painful, "If this guy were real, he wouldn't be caught dead with me either" kind of way.
