I mean it was dark in there but then why did they put it in the back of the cave instead of the front? I found a lightening rune thing on one of the walls; is that it?

Except for a few quests that involve lighting braziers in a particular order, veilfire is used to read runes. That's where you're gonna get most of the recipes from.
