I've enjoyed bioware's writing since NwN (with some exceptions such as ME3's ending). Those of you currently playing DA:I, what do you think of the plot and writing quality compared to previous bioware games? (Without spoilers please)

Some of the characters are amusing (and almost all are better than DA2's characters), I'll describe the over all narrative as being of "pretentious fanfic levels of average".
The world building and general presentation of the setting is a work of art though.

From the 16 or so hours I've played I have to say that it's really amazing, lot's of great references and significant events, everything I expect from a Dragon Age game and more in terms of the plot and writing.

The framing story itself is quite boring, which is just "Stop evil guy from doing evil things". But literally everything else associated with the story is fantastic.

The quality of the plot is about the same as DA:O. If you played DA:O you know what to expect. You're out to stop a world-destroying evil basically. In that its pretty much standard fantasy fare. If you liked the main plot of DA:O you'll probably also like the main plot of DA:I, since they are similar. Some of the criticism of the main plot that you've read is likely based on the fact that its a variation of the plot found in most fantasy titles. Some of the reviewers criticizing the plot were hoping for something more imaginative or different I suppose, but different isn't necessarily always good. (Remember DA2?)
One thing that should be said about the main plot is that it takes a little bit before it kicks into full gear. So some patience may be needed if side questing in the open world isn't your thing. The game is massive and a time sink. Unless you speed run you probably won't even get to the big bad reveal until like 15 hours into the game. Also if you're a completionist try to resist the urge to clear the Hinterlands (a massive map early in the game) before advancing into the main plot. Otherwise it will take you forever to even get Skyhold. Once you're levelled up enough to advance the main story, do so. You could always go back and wrap up those side quests later.
I haven't completed the game yet but so far the cast of companion characters are probably my overall favorite bunch of the three games. Of course that sort of thing is subjective, so its hard to say whether you'd feel the same way. But there is plenty of interaction with them just as there was in previous titles.
