This new installment is a decent game, but I must say bioware..  We have ventured quite far from our beginnings..

the view is nice, yet the complexity is long gone...

Not to mention years later I was more impressed with the rpg element of baldur's gate when I first played it vs this one.  Do not get me wrong the story is great the world is great, but ahem where did the challenge go?

I remember when we had clerics mages rangers etc. cleics had to pray for a number of spells and mages had to MEMORIZE numbers of spells..

I think not having the d&d license anymore or whatever reason we are not playing by those rules take away strategy from the game.

I just maybe reminiscing and being nostalgic, yet I think those were your greatest games...

Good job on the game, I am playing it as we speak it will remain in my library...

Baldur's Gate made with all the modern bells and whistles would be lucky to be half the size.

I think Bioware lost the ability to know how to make PC games, only console games.

So just imagine the hack and slash mess they would do with Baludr's Gate.  They would just add in a  sloppy horseback desgin and call it a new and improved feature rather than just another "achievement" to unlock.

Seriously look at the way DAI is designed the only thing they care about is consoles, and how well would Baldur's Gate do on a console?

Too much sobbing in these threads. Enjoy a great game. I like old RPGs too, but this game is fun even with the botched controls. Just try and have fun, try to adapt.

Do you actually want this back on the merits, or is this a pure nostalgia trip?

I love Baldur's Gate - BG II is one of my favourites ever - but let's not kid ourselves. A huge chunk of the love is nostalgia-based. If you'd never played it before and only seen if for the first time today, a lot of that love would evaporate.

I've started each of the BG games several times in the past 16 years and I've never been able to bring myself to go much further than the start. It was an acquired taste even in its time.

I love the move to in-house IPs, though I wish the first (and my favorite!) Jade Empire would come back someday.

This might be true. Moreover, I'm afraid about what could be left of old good BG in this 'new' form. I'd say that it would be great to have next part of BG around , but perhaps in more like old - school form, resembling infinity engine. Is that possible ? I don't think so. .. maybe that's even better, BG2 is my favorite of all time , let's have good sweet memories about this masterpiece of a game :-)

Modern Bladur's Gate will be amazing and I will instantly buy it - if the mechanics are not changed. But I don't think Bioware can do that anymore - just look at the new DA and that poor excuse of "tactical mode"....I mean they had it working really well in DAO, why they couldn't copy it is beyond me. Now they just make games mainly for consoles and you struggle playing them on PC....

That's because the market has massively shifted - the PC gaming market has collapsed from its late 90s heights. It's impossible for a major studio to create AAA games solely for the PC market these days unless a) they're an MMO with a longer money train, or b.) small studios with low overhead working in cheaper Eastern European countries (ie CD Projekt).

You can't support a company the size of Bioware which makes complex games with long development many-year cycles and just release them on PC in 2014.

Never going to happen. Quote from a pre-release interview with Cameron Lee, the producer of DA: I and obviously, BioWare employee:

"But I also suspect that BioWare wants to distance itself from the games of its past--Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, namely--and be mentioned in the same breath as Elder Scrolls. Lee's words reinforce this notion. "Gaming's moved on from Neverwinter Nights, we've moved on from Baldur's Gate," he says."

Stop living in the past.

I've played all BG's. If they released it now I wouldn't touch it.

I've started each of the BG games several times in the past 16 years and I've never been able to bring myself to go much further than the start. It was an acquired taste even in its time.

And this.

if they do this, completely redo the game and use the 3.5 rule set, hell i'd even accept the 4th edition ruleset.

4E would be great, but they'd have to do it as a true turn-based game.  Not real time with pause.

Really now? I am sorry but you are wrong PC contributes for 51% of ALL GAME SALES atm, which is more than PS,XBOX,NINTENDO and Mobile games combined and is going up fast. On the contrary the console market is going down, so what they are doing at the moment is trying to push us all to buy console so it doesn't collapse. Example - RIot is bigger company than Bioware and trives on ONLY PC sales. So bullshit of the kind - "they can't work only for PC" is dumb. The problem is PC is punishing, most will try the game before buying and if you release something like this - you won't get sales. So not getting sales on PC is like Gabe said "Developer's fault, not the consumer". PC market is more rewarding, but more punishing towards the developers, especially the ones that try to sell half-baked games. Thats the real reason why most are going to consoles - less money than PC sector, but you can realease whatever you want and people will by since they can't try it beforehand and maybe some of those PC suckers will buy it too which is a bonus. So in a way consoles are responsible for what we are getting today as "games of the Year".

Sorry if that came out angry - I got tricked by all the promises from Bioware so I reordered and now I am pissed.

Is 4E really that good? I've heard bad things about it.

51%, sure, but how much of that 51% is AAA stuff like Bio makes? Tons of money coming in for Facebook crap doesn't change anything for DAI, because those gamers aren't going to play DAI.

They could remake Baldur's Gate and people would complain that is not as good as the original, that it failed, blah blah blah the usual crap as always.

Yeah, called the Enhanced Edition; you can google up BG:EE and BG2:EE.

I bought and played both; mostly bug fixes and some tweaks.  Fun and worth it, imo.

No. An enhanced edition was done by Gear Box for current OS's.

BGToSC, BG2+ToB, and now Icewind Dale are all available on Steam.

And if they make it the same game as the original but with upgrade graphics for current times then people would complain that it is an arcaic game with arcaic mechanics and boring gameplay.

The fact is that a game like Baldur´s Gate only would be good for the nostalgia people and the old people, the current RPG players and the new ones look for more dynamic and fast gameplays (like Dragon Age Inquisition, Skyrim or Diablo 3, each one in its own genre) instead of stale, slow gameplays.
