I don't know how you could measure how long it took. Levels, I guess. I think the little number in the upper-right corner (is it also next to you in the lobby) is how many times you've leveled up, just like N7 level in ME3MP.
How long before you could craft class armor and unlock something?

My legionnaire was level 12 i think, and my keeper was level 8 when I obtained enough materials for my first character armor, which was reaver.

I'm at 56 and have created Arcane Warrior, Assassin and Templar, plus Templar Tier 2 armour so far.

Was around 120 challenge points or whatever by the time I had all the classes unlocked.

I'm not sure how everyone is building these characters so fast, are you all playing on Perilous already?

took me until about level 16 on my archer to craft a hunter. Found a templar by level 7 though.

Got my Archer to 14 and Legionnaire to 7 before I had enough to craft a Templar.
Now I've crafted Keepers Rare Armor and found 2 Archer armors and a keeper armor (which I don't need since I've got the Rare one)
Best to get to level 9-10 (Depending on Class) then just keep running threatening operations, even if you don't clear it you'll always have enough gold for at least 1 medium chest or 1 medium 1 small per operation.

I have found the time played to unlock these is not at all too difficult. I have played a fair bit and but only have one class left to unlock. I think I found armour for one and crafted the rest.

Agreed. Sadly, most of the armor I get through loot is a variation of armor already unlocked. I think I unlocked the Assassin via loot, but everything else was unlocked by crafting. That said, with the current state of the game, cloth is definitely the bottleneck for crafting. Sucks if you really want to play those mage classes, but if you're not picky then unlock rogues/warriors first will be quicker.
As others have said though, you can get a fair amount of cloth by salvaging staves/light armor upgrades/runes.

I'm around 98 or so, and I've got Katari, Arcane Warrior, Alchemist, and Elementalist. I've also got the advanced armor for Arcane Warrior and just a few mats shy of the Elementalist/Alchemist max armor.
Have earned all the basic armor for the Keeper, Legionnaire and the Archer through chests I've bought or looted during operations.
(Edit) Note: I've had maybe 8-12 hours of it, mainly gaming with siblings.

After a prestige.
Also note unlocking mage characters is much more difficult than unlocking a warrior or rogue due to the few sources of cloth.
Pro tip: Runes give 1 of each type of material.

Most of my 8-12 hours was spent grinding Cloth for my Enlightened Arcane Warrior armor.
I've got like 40+ Iron and 35+ Druffalo hide as a bi-product though. XD
