So, I chose Knight-Enchanter. I have the passive that strengthens my barrier when I do damage, the one from the Spirit tree that rejuvenates my mana when I have a barrier active, and a staff with, both, "+14% heal on kill" AND "10% chance to use Unbowed on hit"

So, I wade into a group of enemies all Leeroy jenkins, cast Chain Lightning, Immolate, then start swinging away with my Spirit Blade(thank the Maker you can just hold that button). By this point I have, both, full barrier AND half guard, or full guard if there are 10 enemies. Plus, if I went in damaged, I'm healing with every strike. If, by some miracle, they manage to get rid of both layers of defense (which is unlikely, what with Dorian replenishing my barrier all the time, and my attacks replenishing guard...), I just Fade Step away, and start raining fire on them with Energy Barrage, Immolate, Fire Mine, and my staff until I have my barrier and guard back.

I think I'm in love.  I so missed Arcane Warrior

I'm starting to get concerned about the other options. Everyone seems to love Knight-Enchanter, yet praise - or even discussion - of Necromancer or Rift Mage seems non-existent. A favoured subclass is one thing; an overshadowing class is another. :?

People like synergy and flexibility. KE has the most. Necro is good too. Rift Mage seems weak.

Rift Mage interested me the most at first because it seemed like the most likely path given, you know, the mark. I went with Knight Enchanter because it reminded me of my AW Warden though, and I can't look back. KE is just way too fun.

I'll always miss Duelist spec for Rogues though. Rest in Piece swashbuckling excitement (Not that Dragonage ever even got the swordplay halfway close to right, but I still liked it)

Well, that's because Knight-Enchanter makes you really powerful. The other 2 just don't. To be fair, that's the point. However, it just synergizes with the other schools better than Rift Mage and Necromancer do. Necro is a control school, so it was never going to make you insanely powerful. Rift Mage gets outshined, though, because it's DPS, but so is Knight-Enchanter, and KE does it better. Rift Mage really just looks like a grab bag of random spells they couldn't put anywhere else. My second character's still going to be an Elven Rift Mage, though. My third's going to be a Qunari Necromancer.

I think it would be wiser to buff the other two, if anything. Make everyone feel like the ultimate badass, rather than taking away the power KEs have grown to love.

Fade Shield is OP is the main issue I think.

Knight enchanter is OP. The only actual full heal for you and party...so basically yeah it does overshadow every other option for mages.

Overshadows anything, not just mages... however... my first playthrough of KE was meh so I decided Rift Mage now because I feel that a rift-mage dalish-elf romancing Solas-Harel is the most cool option story-wise and story > power/gameplay/whatever

I picked up Knight Enchanter as my character's specialization and I love running in and spirit blading things.

Typically what I do is hit the first enemy with a freezing spell, then fade step into them or close enough, put up barrier, and start swinging Spirit Blade.

Unfortunately at the moment I don't have all the skills I want for KE, or the Winter tree, or the Spirit tree, and there's probably too many skills I want for synergy, but whatever. I'll make it work. Right now, it is FUN to play as a Knight Enchanter, gah.

Well, can you hold two daggers?

Ha! Didn't think so.

Rogue: 1 point. KE: 0.

No, but I have a blade of energy created by a spirit I bound to a sword hilt...

Necromancer is really good. Walking Bomb is as OP as ever, Spirit Mark is great. It does have some issues against enemies resistant to Spirit and/or immune to fear. But I specced Dorian as full Necro and he kicks asses.

Rift Mage is just a bit meh, yeah. It gives you CC and debuffs, but KE has a better CC anyway and little synergizes with Rift Mage., unlike KE or Necro who have good passives in almost every tree. The damage it does is outshined by the Inferno tree and its monstruous Fire Mine, too.

I think Fade Shield alone is what makes the KE too powerful. The rest of the tree is good, but not spectacular; that passive however allows for nearly 100% barrier uptime with the right build. That's just kinda nuts. Nerf the passive a bit, maybe, but I'd rather buff the other specs.

Hell, I find that each class as an OP spec (Champion, Tempest, KE), a good spec (Reaver, Assassin, Necromancer) and a poor spec (Templar, Artificier, Rift Mage). Bioware should concentrate on improving the poor ones.

As someone playing KE, it's awesome...and yeah, fade shield might be a tad OP. Personally, I'm fine with that, it gets me through the game faster.

Nightmare mode needs a powerful class, otherwise the increased enemy HP will just make this a Destiny grind

BioWare has never been good at balancing, that's why they don't do PvP gameplay,

I soloed a level 19 dragon being a level 16 KE. This specialization is godly. I hope they won't fix this, it's just too much fun.

I tried all 3 before sticking with Necromancer. KE is op, I'll give you that especially when you maxed out the tree and take full advantage of the barrier and it's synergy with Spirit/Winter (as well as the passive that reduce cd from Inferno) school, but being melee isn't really my thing. Rift mage is kinda meh to me though. But there's just something about Necromancer that makes it fun to play for me. Lots of dots, panic state for mobs, then just watch them run over to my fire mine or blow em up with Immolate lol. Also this made me lol in my mage playthrough:

Spoiler

I've yet to test it on a dragon with Spirit Mark lol. Should try it one day.

wait... you're not using fade cloak + decloaking blast? Clean Burn? Conductive Current? Ha then you don't know what beeing truly op means

you still have a long way to go :D

Knight Enchanter is the greatest thing since... ever. If you're spec'd in the Winter Tree (Fade Step, Winter Stillness, Mana Surge, Ice Armor) you'll be a monster.
