I'm playing at normal right now, and it occurs to me that I can kind of manage my difficulty by going to higher level places before I'm supposed to, for example I went to Hissing Wastes at level 8 and had a great time. If you're playing in nightmare, how many levels above you can you fight? It would probably be helpful to include your class and build, as I am suspecting those playing Knight Enchanter or Rift Mage will be doing much better than someone playing a 2H Reaver, for example.
Those playing at nightmare, what level range can you handle?

I've closed rifts when I was a level 2 or below them, but in general, everything scales to my level. So it's kind of hard to find an area above my level from what I'm seeing.
Oh, and I am playing a 2H Reaver... It's not so bad, but the activated abilities are pretty meh, nice passive though. On the other hand, none of the warriors specialization appeal to me, they are all kind of weak when it comes to abilities. The Templar dispel is nice though on enemies with barriers.

Efficiently or not ? Efficiently for my own level. Non efficiently 4-5 lvls above me.
That's with my archer, 2 mage + cass party. But i am switching, trying out other classes now that i have more understanding of the game.

On the early levels with you having less gear and skill points, I was able to fight enemies 1-2 levels above my level relatively fine some potions used here and there and the occasional death. Also take note this was just normal encounter enemies in the hinterlands.
Rifts and demons in general are different though, I was able to close a rift with level 8 rage demons but it was just pure luck I was level 6. All potions used it was a pain.
On the later levels however with more access to gear and skill points. I think it's safe to say you can manage 4-5 levels above.
This was on nightmare btw.

Rifts on my level can be really hard already. Rifts up to 1 level higher are still beatable - but more than that... oh well.
As to regular enemies, it depends. On level 10 I was able to defeat a level 12 group of undead with an Elite in front, but it consisted of running away from the elite with my mage, and attacking with the rest of the team most of the time. In general, anything with level higher than mine is really, really hard. Hell, anything with level EQUAL to mine can be really hard as well.
From what I've seen from my own play and youtube Let's Play, there is a HUGE difference between Hard and Nightmare.

Against regular enemies, 4 levels is the most I can pull off in a fair fight. Against rifts, 1-2 levels is probably max, but I've managed to close off rifts 4 levels above me using hit and run tactics and sniping. As for bosses? Depending on the boss, some I would only efficiently be if I'm 1-2 levels above them. Usually the level requirement of gear an enemy drops is a good indicator. E.g. a level 12 dragon drops level 15 gear, so I'd want my party to be level 15 in order to expect an easy fight.

It also depends on the Rift. If you get multiple Terrors ...

didnt notice the level very much. I clear up all enemies in hinterland except for 3 level 12 rift, and dragon area. Storm coast except for the cave in west, dont know how to get pass it, and I currently just reture from val voyeaux with new recuiter vivienne. all party member are level 9 currently.
still have problem with level 12 rift.
I love this game, the nightmare diffculity setting is very well done. smooth and challenge. Good job Bioware.

I killed all the level 8 demons at the rift near the wall with a level 4 Varric.
Stealth + Full Draw = win
The level 12 ones can be done quite easily with a level 9-12 party. The hardest rift was in the woods with a very narrow opening, in a cave. In that one you actually had to fight them instead of baiting them with archer, and there was always a bear coming to join the fight...
Playing on Nightmare + FF. Party is Archer inquisitor, Varric, Solas and Cassandra.

That's the cave in Hinterlands right? NE on the map a couple clicks from your tent. (If you put it up)
Well, in my case, the two bears that always show up prior to me entering that cave, they run off into the woods as soon as I inch closer into the cave. As much as I try to get them to enter the cave to involve them in the fight. They won't. It's like they know what I am planning so they turn around and run off. Lol. Bastards.
I've closed all the rifts in the hinters. That Rift we speak of now and the one next to it. (Further northwest) Are the only ones I have left. Both are hard and they don't even have commanders. Well, the cave has that ice witch demon. But that's about it. Those lava monsters destroy my team almost instantly.
I'm going to try to bait those bears to enter. Because that fight is hard as hell and I am a level 11 Mage.
But that was pre Skyhold, now I am a 12 level with Skyhold blessing. Let's see how it turns out when I go back.

Two levels above me is also sort of the limit for me.
I tried closing that one rift in the Hinterlands that has level 12 enemies at level 8 and got my ass handed to me. Well, I actually managed fine until the greater terror demon appeared, then I got my ass handed to me.
Thoughest fight in the entire game so far (in fact, one of the tougher fights I've ever had in gaming) has been the final stage of the "In Your Heart Shall Burn" quest. Was foolish enough to start that at level 8 and got to level 9 during it, but hot damn that final fight is crazy tough. Took me half a day really.

Agree on all points. That fight is horrendous because you have to hold a key to turn the gear.

Oh, I should add that it heavily depends what enemies those are. Right now I'm on a story mission, which throws at you Rift that is equal to your level - the first wave is some wraiths, rage demon and despair demon. Sure - doable. Second wave was 2 rage demons, 2 despair demons and 2 unknown enemies, which I dispelled before they appeared. I was completely overwhelmed regardless.
On the other hand, fighting a bunch of regular skeletons 2 levels higher is no big deal.

It's absurdly difficult. I found myself unable to fight the final boss (10% health, no potions/granedas whatsoever, no talents on anyone to counter the Guard this guy can build), so I managed to kill some of it's minions, then just started to load the trebuchet with my main character, and thrown my companions as cannon fodder to slow the boss down - I hoped that the cutscene will start when I finish turning and I was right.

I haven't gotten past level 5, since I keep changing my mind on what I want to be, but the only thing I really have trouble with is Terror Demons. Even when they're my level there's always 2 or 3 of them for each wave of every rift and they suck. You can't tank them; they just break whatever taunt you place on them when they teleport and go after whoever they want, then you just get AoE incapacitated to death.
I probably need to spec into things like fade step, evade and combat roll earlier to deal with that, but I avoid rifts like the plague early on because of Terrors on Nightmare.
