i just got 'all new, faded for her', solas' companion quest. and the exalted plains is nowhere on either of my maps. Not my quest map, not my war-room map. Nor can I find a quest to unlock it....

 

am I missing something?

It will be an area you scout to unlock from the war table using power, like the Hinterlands, the Storm Coast, and the Fallow Mire. How far have you gotten with the main quest? You might not have gotten to the point where you can open the Exalted Plains. It's also decently high-leveled. For reference, here's the list of areas given by Prima's guide in what seems to be approximate order by level of the average baddies floating around. (Obviously there are parts of each area that are higher level, like dragons and certain dungeons and such.)

I'm right before 'the final piece', the one immediately following my <spoiler> attaining the power in the elven ruin </spoiler>, the quest I assume is the last. if it isnt then I'll go do it and continue until I can unlock the exalted plains.

Okay, so you're a lot further than I am! Oops.

 

I seem to recall that it just popped up on my table along with places like Emprise du Lion and the Emerald Graves. I'm afraid I can't think of anything else at the moment. Have you unlocked everything you can on the war table? It should be one of those standard scouting ops where it uses power but completes immediately.

If it helps
It's in the war room, on the Orlais side of the map, directly south of the purple lion crest for val Royeaux. It has the same abnormal shape as the other scouting missions.
