My Inquisitor is a Dagger Tempest, level 12.  Rest of the crew is level 11.  I am playing on Hard.  Using Cassandra, Cole and Vivienne.  I can get the Dragon to the 25% phase but we always die running up the damn hill, and usually are out of health pots by then.  How do you unlock the third potion slot?  Is that an Inquisition Perk, because that would really help me out here, for sure.  I am using regen potions, should I switch to fire tonics?

Also, I am trying to exploit the KE stuff, but obviously not doing it right.  Just using Barrier, Fade Step and Spirit Blade, Vivienne still gets killed sometimes.

Not sure how you are dying with Viv. Are you spamming the heck out of Spirit Blade?

Just wait. The real fun begins when you try to take out the Higland Ravager in Emprise du Lion. You'll see...

Nice post btw.

I have no problems with the dragons.. exluding the one at the Storm Coast. That thing is murdering me left and right. Armor + electricity AoE circles + wing flapping? Mother of god, Varric and Solas has never chugged my potions so fast before!

I had bad gear?  I don't know.  I was just mostly spamming Spirit Blade, I mixed in Barrier for the group when I could spare it and tried to Fade Cloak when it seemed to make sense.  Vivienne was level 11 though and the Dragon could kill her easily, despite a full barrier, in 2 hits.  And I did not have the mana regen to literally spam Spirit Blade.

I went back 3 levels later and it was fine.

I wonder.. is there a way to get the tank to attack a dragons head/front leg?

No matter what I do, my tank goes for the back legs. This ends up in attacks getting the tank from behind, ignoring my shield and instead of 1 damage, they take 50-80 damage. If I could solve that, I could easily take down the Ferleden Frostback at low level.. but without it.. er.. damn this AI!

2 dragons I killed was by ordering Cassandra then Blackwall to attack head and use only Challenge and Shield Wall. Never had to switch to them. Rest attacked leg. So yes there is.

Excellent post.  My party at level 12 was able to just finish (used all heal potions though).  Iron Bull doesn't do as well as building guard as Cassandra does, IMO, but maybe I spec'd him wrong.  Plus was trying to build approval.

I wish this game had coordinates as it took me a little while to figure out what the OP meant originally so I just did one run through of running until I got my bearings (party didn't wipe, but had used half the healing potions).

But the strategy listed worked very well.  Good job!

Here's how I defeated a dragon in Hinterlands and three others after it - soloed it with Knight Enchanter build. No struggles with dumb companions AI and controls. It was quite boring too, because they all use the same attack pattern and are quite the HP sponges. It's more a battle of attrition than anything else.

Yes. This is the ONLY way to actually beat a dragon reliably. Since your companions not killing themselves and the controlled character depends only on luck. I died more than a 100 times fighting different dragons until I decide to **** it, shave off the party and kited her myself (the hinterlands one, I managed to kill Crestwood with party due to her jumping into a lucky position in the fields, where AI was not able to screw up no matter how much they tried. It might be worth, however, to bring 3 mages with barriers as an early protection for yourself. With roll you will be always able to aggro her in mellee, and barriers can protect you from tail swipes, before the mages die when it first does it's fireball thing. However I found that also depends on luck as she often pounces on the mages when displacing so you end up having to order them around, which means irregularity in the fight and usually that ends with the companions killing you or each other faster.

I have VIv with a disabled spirit blade. No way am I letting their be any melee mage, how tedious, they are bad enough as it is. Besides all she does is set off the aoe as a melee. Why would I specialized into that tree as an inquistor? I would actually have to do some melee, but with no taunt ability, or any other melee abilities. Apart from a one spam spell, this would become absolutely droll indeed.

y'know decent tactical control like in DAO would make combat in this game less of a mess... oh wait, we don't have that in DAI do we?

If you actually take the time to learn the tactical AI, they control just fine in dragon fights.

This is how i set up against the hinterlands dragon at levels 14/13/13/13

Cass, Solas, Dorian, Inquisitor (Dual Daggers)

1. Tell Cass to attack the head

2. Tell Dorian and Solas to Hold Position at medium range from dragon off to it's side. NEVER ISSUE AN ATTACK FROM TACTICAL AFTERWARDS, they will auto attack and still use abilities while holding position, if done right they should never move from the spot unless moved by the wing hurricane,

3. Manually control Inquisitor and flank the dragons legs

When dragon fire breathes: Pop Barrier on Cass and use tactical to move her out of the way, afterwards reposition as before.

When dragon flies off and fireballs: All characters hold position in one place. Use the advance time feature with RT, and as soon as a fireball is sent at you move all characters to a different location and hold position. When the dragon comes in to land, barrier the team.

When dragon Wing Hurricanes: Barrier Dorian+Solas, and tell them to move right next to the dragon. When it's done reposition as per the start.

When dragon perches and calls adds: Bunch up and barrier under cliff, use warcry and focus fire adds, ignore dragon.

When dragon is on ground with adds: Cassandra deals with dragon everyone else on adds.

*sigh* Can you record yourself fighting the dragon? You are either hopeless in this game, or you got the most buggy version of this game. With all the tips given to you so far, you should be able to take him(her?) down!

Sorry I've been removed from the thread for so long, lots o' replies. Help us help you mate, as far as I can tell the abilities are pretty well listed. What are you actually dying too?

This can only be done (as far as I'm aware) in tac mode. You can double click*? the head to make Cass stick to the head of he dragon. Just be careful when she uses things like Charging Bull.

I'm sorry about the location, I will look into updating it. By chance did you see the map? Tried to make it pretty reasonable. I'll see what I can do.

I'm playing at Nightmare mode, lvl 12, failing miserably. Has anyone tried fighting him at higher levels, like lvl 20? Does it get easier then?

How I defeated the Hinterlands dragon:

- Tell your party to wait at the limit of it's territory.

- Spam basic attacks with a Mage.

- When it's at minimum HP, approach it and let it "start" the combat normally. Give him a few lovepats and it's dead.

Cheap, I know, and I won't be doing that for my nightmare playthough, but hey.... :D

If you use tactical mode and pause frequently, the dragon fight is not such difficult but still challenge.

The only thing annoy me was just the big size of dragon, my PC was DW rogue, every time I command my PC cast twinfangs, weird ****** glitch occur(should be glitch), my PC can not cast twinfangs immediately, instead it shaking, look like some positioning function not work properly, sometime I witness even 10s until twinfangs been cast.

Inquisitor - Assassin Archer, Cassandra, Blackwall, Dorian. All level 12. Nightmare without friendly fire.

I struggled for some 5-6 hours trying to do it with only 1 tank, (tried both Cassandra and Blackwall), Inquisitor with daggers and Sera or Solas because I read that you need as many range characters as possible. The funniest thing is that my Inquisitor was Double Dagger for most part of the game and I changed him just for that fight. That didn't help so I finally took both Cassandra and Blackwall and later decided to try Archery for couple levels. During many unsuccessful attempts I managed to get dragon to around 35k health but that was it. The main problem was Dragon's unwillingness to concentrate on my tank. Whenever he took out my mages with fireballs or wing flaps, it was 50%/50% if I manage to restore them or die. After reading this topic it seems all I had to do was make tank attack dragon head but I'm not sure how can you get enough guard to survive her melee attacks out of warcry and challenge only. Maybe with champion's abilities... Anyway, It turned out that 2 tanks solve this problem easily. It still took some 45 minutes with a lot of tactical camera time. The frustration of losing every time was unpleasant but the eventual victory made it all worthwhile!NoJhkym459w.jpg

I also noticed that. Mostly it happened during attacks on back legs. I'm not sure but I think the problem is not limited to rogue, I think I saw a couple times same thing happened to Shield Bash and Lunge and slash when a Back leg was the target.
