I'm having this problem too. Around 40 hours or so, I could count the banters on my hands.
I started a new game and it seemed to work for a while, it switched from one problem to another however. They conversed more but loading took much longer.
I'm now back to no conversing and loading is back to normal.

I am sure we will if we keep asking, seems like more and more people are looking into it. I imagine that the devs probably at first assumed we were complaining about sparse banter and assumed we wanted them talking constantly, not that we almost never heard them...and now that more details are emerging, they're understanding the severity of what some of us are experiencing!

PS4 - Deluxe Edition, 70 Hours of Gameplay and the banter was triggered no more the 20 times

do you guys know if we will have patch to fix this soon? or are they not able to find the source of the problem? i want to start another playthrough but i really don't feel like it, the game is so lonely :( and the feel of this unused potential irks me

I'm sorry, but as far as I know there's no ETA on this or anything else. All we know is that it's being looked into. It will eventually be resolved to the best of their ability. They can't really go about issuing patch dates just yet, I'd imagine, what with so much to investigate.

I'm also very lonely when I'm adventuring. The banters are very rare, even when I bring people who are supposed to talk to each other a lot. It can take several hours between banters.

At one time I thought everything was fixed because I got several banters in a row, but then everything went back to being very quiet.

I'll test tomorrow to see how long I can have them idle before they start talking to each other.

I'm on the PC, standard edition, the downloaded version.

I'm assuming I am expericing this glitch, but I could benefit from knowing that a normal/usual amount of banter is. I did think things were rather quiet (I think Solas speaking of artifacts being nearby is what I hear most commonly) but actual banter hasn't been terribly common, but I was not sure if that was simply due to the scope of the game (as in, there's many hours to fill, so it's spaced out more than I was anticipating/hoping).

I have played about 28 hours on one character and 20 on another and have only probably had about 10 banters between the two characters.... Fixing this bug would be a huge for me and would probably add hours more to my game play...

Well, occasionally we see posts from people who aren't afflicted and they can really help us gauge what we should probably be experiencing. On the Origin thread just now, a poster stated that in their file the companions all chat together so damn often the person actually went and added Cole expressly hoping he'd have less content so things could quiet down.

Instead, he apparently talks even more. >_> The poster also claimed "at least 40" instances of banter between... I think it was Cass, Varric, and Solas that they've seen.

Made an account so I can post. I've played around 35 hours on one character, and I've had maybe 10 banters. Most of them involving Solas. I'm on PC.

Sweet Andraste, that just made me twice as sad about this whole affair. It feels like I've missed out on half the game due to this. Ugh. Such a big disappointment. I think I've heard like 5 different banters with Varric my whole game. Sigh. And I've played for 75 hours.

I do plan on playing again and making different choices, so once this gets fixed it will basically be a different game entirely.

Thanks for joining the Scriptquision. ;) Solas is probably still the one I've heard the most from, myself, although amusingly I've seen more than one person who clearly doesn't have the bug claiming he's among the quietest.

Tell me about it. Makes me feel like I'm playing only an empty shell of a game compared to others.

Yes, that's exactly it. All those open areas feel completely empty. Maybe that's why people feel like the side quests are worthless. I also started feeling like that with a completely silent party and just the wind for company. There's only so much joy a pretty landscape can give you. I felt that I discovered this far too late in the game so I went ahead and finished it. I honestly hope they can fix it on existing saves though. It's often the case in games that existing saves cannot be salvaged. That would be another bummer since I don't want to part with my rogue and rather reload the earliest save and play again.

The lack of banter is the major reason why I rushed to get to the ending instead of exploring the last few regions thoroughly. I didn't really notice it until I saw other posters mention their lack of banter, but now that I'm aware that it's a bug it's pretty much the only thing I can think about when going exploring. I'm actually in the process of re-downloading and re-installing the game to see if it improves things, but my connection is so slow it'll probably take 2 days to download. Hopefully we'll have more information about this bug by then.

It's a shame that I've seen some of the regulars come in about this.  <sad wave>

I just sent a save file to the devs, so hopefully they could help.  I don't think I'm up for testing again for the time being.

Definitely having this bug too. 50 hours in, ps4. The lack of banter was probably my biggest complaint, glad to hear its a bug that can hopefully be fixed!

Wow this thread is really moving now!  Thanks to Allan for the support, and gratified that other BW folks are also "looking into it".  It would be great if we had something by way of official response.  Even "PC Community Concerns" got an official response and Mark was saying on Twitter that they are working on the "walk keybind" for PC!  This issue cuts across all platform and goes to the soul of the game, and there really should be an official acknowledgement that it's an issue even if they haven't nailed down the cause.  "looking into it" is appropriately vague! :)

I had some issues with Solas' mission in Exalted Plains... it wouldn't trigger until I reloaded the game. Also, no one talks in this area.... they're completey silent and I've tried different party combinations.

It's terrible. Only Solas seems to talk more often, but he's got a permanent spot in my party, so it's not a big surprise. Still, I haven't heard much from him. Sera and Iron Bull didn't talk even once. Solas, Vivienne and Cole talked a little  in Fallow Mires (3 dialogues...). When I changed squad, I spent an hour in silence and lost interest in exploring the area...

I'm sorry. It's just, it's been months now since I jested with you over your wonderful name choice. ;)

Sucks for all of us. So say we all!

David Hulegaard, one of the Community Managers for both DA and ME, is the dev on the Origin thread asking about platforms.  So if anyone is curious, he's one of the other developers trying to figure out what happened.

Understood.  Still, I think we should get more information about what/how/why from Bioware, if not you specifically.

On this issue, specifically, it's purely "under investigation" at this point.

If the glitch is being triggered by a phantom horse, it would at least make sense across all systems. (Could also get a few good Old Spice horse jokes out of it, too.) I was going to say that I'd never heard the noises, but I realised I'd turned down the sound effects down to about 30 in game, due to severe sound levelling issues. I think I had the problem before I got the mount (about three hours in), and it may be coincidental, but I think Cass/Varric/Solas completely stopped talking after that. Will have to experiment. I had briefly started a new game last night like a few others, but unfortunately it will take awhile to see if it has worked.

Thanks for keeping the thread alive, guys!

It isn't a phantom horse, at least for me.  For whatever reason, the game sound itself is pretty quiet on my computer, so I have the sound cranked way up.  Last night, while I was idle in camp (20 minutes on one test and 30 minutes on another,) I never heard a single horse sound.  I heard the sound of the wind, footsteps from the req officer as well as the occasional pacing of my companions, and the crackle of fire.  I heard the music loop every 5 minutes.  There was no horse sounds anywhere near me.

I had it up even louder on a second test earlier, since I was a few feet away doing laundry.  I about dropped my clothes when I heard Varric start to say something and ran back in the room.   He just had his one line of the refugees reminding him of Kirkwall and that was it.

I've even tested it to where I never went near any of the stables in Haven, nor near anyone else, once the cutscene there was over.  I turned around and went straight into the Chantry to continue with the main story.  Went to the first camp in the Hinterlands and just sat there to see if banter would kick in.  I did this with two different characters, and even had two different world states for them.  It didn't matter.  One of them had nothing in 20 minutes, the other had 1 banter in a half hour.   :(

Edit: And compared to some folks in this thread, I was pretty lucky to get even that.

It's not the Horses and not the locations, seems to be something to do with the characters, everyone is getting different results with different party members. I don't get much from Bull or Vivienne but the other characters work like a charm. Some people are having great banter from Cole/Bull/Cassandra and it's probably the worst combo for me by miles.
