I've gotten a handful of saves (even beyond the 3 just for more data points).  Thanks everyone.

Ok I had to make it a short test, because I don't have a lot of time, but I took Blackwall, Cole, and Solas to the Emerald Graves. I have never gotten banter there, and never gotten Cole with Solas before.

Saved at Skyhold, then travelled. Tried rest, no mount/dismount...banter (Blackwall-Cole) within 10 minutes.

Reloaded at Skyhold. Tried mount/dismount, no rest. Followed the exact same path as before. Banter (Solas-Cole) at 15 min.

Reloaded at Skyhold. No rest or mount/dismounts...no banter for 40 minutes. Followed same pattern as before and then idled/wandered.

Chiming in, affected by this bug also. I'm on PS3, about 50 hours into the game. Had a little banter in the beginning between Varric, Solas, and others, but nothing for several hours. Glad to provide additional details if necessary!

sorry for not having followed the thread lately and now I am too tired to read all the recent replies, I just wanted to report that after having arrived at Skyhold the party banter has become more frequent, a lot more frequent than before. I'm starting to think it might not be a bug but a bad randomization system

Anyway yay for the banter and YAY for this

Spoiler
, it just happened and I had to stop playing because my brain is ko  !

Try fast traveling to a different camp and then mount/dismount, rest. That worked for me the first time.

I'm going to test it again tomorrow.

I did that too, didn't work. D:

We want to start examining "Did they even attempt to fire" (there are flags associated with them to ensure they don't repeat) and stuff like that.

What do you mean by "ensure they don't repeat"?

If this means we should never hear the same banter twice at all (as opposed to them following a sequence where earlier banter won't be repeated after specific other banter has), then I can already say the issue may be related to those flags.  Early in the game I heard Varric, Solas, and Cassandra keep repeating the same banters (Solas' banter in particular seemed to repeat).  Could repeated dialogue perhaps be indicating other banters that the game thinks it is flagging?  My other thought was if the issue could be more hardware related (sound setup in particular), since many seem to comment about the lack of music too (for my wife and I Val Royeaux seems eerily silent, with only occasional ambient npc overheard discussion breaking an otherwise empty soundscape).  Were I a PC player (playing on Xbox 360) I would offer my save file, well that and you seem to have gotten enough already.

Congrats on a greater degree of success post-Skyhold, elfa! May it hold true for you. Unfortunately, that has not changed anything for most of us in this thread from what I've gathered.

I tried the whole fast travel/mount/rest thing last night in three areas. It triggered one banter in the first two and nothing in the third.

I spent at least 45 minutes on each map.

There's music in Val Royeaux??? This seems like it could be connected. I have never heard music there and also do not get  banter there.

50ish hours, banter happens but is very rare. Music is mostly non-existent, it'll play sometimes when I'm wandering around and just cuts off. Bard music seems buggy too - it'll start then sometimes stop mid song. Had a few cases where my audio pops and then there is no sound, if I change to another surround sound format (home theatre is default) to headphones sound comes back. The format in game, nothing to do with system settings.

Win7 pro, 64bit, 8gb ram, 4gb gtx 970 video, onboard realtek sound (gigabyte z97x-sli board), Koss pro dj100 headphones.

EDIT: 32 hours, my bad.

Some mixed results for me.

PS4, 15 hours in

Vivienne, Sera, Iron Bull

I've bolded/italicized possibly interesting things, either banter or an oddity. For the music, I tried to keep track of when the songs were different.

14:22 - Save loaded in Haven, travel to Hinterlands

14:22 - Ambient music plays for 10 seconds on arrival, stops

14:25 - Ambient music plays for 10 seconds, stops

14:27 - Pause to let the dog out. :\

14:29 - Resume, dog is back inside :)

14:31 - Ambient music plays for 10 seconds

14:32 - Change subtitle option to conversations and ambient

14:33 - Sera speaks one line

14:34 - Ambient music plays for 10 seconds

14:35 - Change subtitles back to off

14:36 -Different, faint ambient music plays for 10 seconds

14:37 - Options menu, change dynamic range from HT to TV and back to HT (so no real change, but I "confirmed" before exit

14:38 - Banter between Sera and Vivienne

14:39 - Ambient music #3 plays for 5 seconds

14:40 - Call mount (don't actually mount), rest

14:41 - Ambient music #4 plays for 10 seconds

14:42 - Get on mount (still hanging around), get off mount, rest

14:43 - Travel to different camp in Hinterlands

14:43 - Attempt to call mount, but nothing selectable in wheel  (this has happened before, no cursor ever appears)

14:45 - Travel back to first camp, call mount, mount, dismount, rest

14:48 - Sera, Bull banter

14:49 - Sera speaks one line

14:50 - Ambient music #2 (faint one from before) plays for 10 seconds

14:51 - Vivienne, Sera banter

14:53 - Ambient music #4 (main theme) plays for 10 seconds

14:57 - Ambient music #5 plays for 10 seconds

14:58 - Ambient music plays for 10 seconds

14:58 - Sera, Bull banter

15:00 - start walking to other camp

15:02 - Arrive at other camp

15:02 - Ambient music plays for 10 seconds

15:05 - Travel to Haven, back to Hinterlands, mount/dismount/rest

15:08 - Ambient music for 5 seconds

15:10 - Travel to another camp, mount/dismount/rest

15:13 - Ambient music plays for 10 seconds

15:15 - No banter since 14:58, quitting

So in this case, traveling from one camp to another within a land seemed tied to a bit more banter. But the initial and later travels between Haven and Hinterlands did not. Since it's such a small sample (in frequency and time) it could be an anomoly..

Mine don't talk as much as I'd like, or maybe not as much as I thought they would. They seem to trigger at the oddest times, like at the start or end of a battle or in camp when I'm changing party. In fact, when this happens, the talking member will carry on a one-sided conversation if the other member was removed from the gang.

I've got some time free today, so what I'll do is select party members I don't usually take with me and firstly play normally for an hour and then try the fast travel/mount/dismount/rest trick for an hour.  I'll record the time of any banter and I'll make a note of any audio glitches that I notice.  I think it would be good to see some side by side comparisons.   :)

Thank you :D I had a lot of banter in the Storm Coast while closing rifts, making Blackwall's personal quests and such, I'm so sad Blackwall doesn't like Cole though, I thought he would be more fatherly  :?

Seems like my good luck ran out. Decided to play the game normally and go out questing for awhile, instead of sitting around at camps, and even though I did the mount/rest thing I'm not getting any banter this time around. Been over an hour :( Ah well. Really not too sure what the difference is from what I did earlier, besides getting into more fights along the way.

Did you get any comments from the party while fighting?  I don't think I've heard anyone say anything in combat outside of someone's health dropping low.

I've only just discovered that this is a glitch and not just lack of party banter!! So that's actually kind of exciting. Does this seem to be a universal thing for people who are impacted? (E.g. Will I have the same problem if I create a new character and start over again?)

Unsure whether it's a bug for me or they just don't like talking much. My team most of the time is (Cass, Varric, Solas), (Cass, Varric, Blackwall), (Cass, Blackwall, Solas), and (Blackwall, Dorian, Varric). ~70 hours in and they've maybe had a banter under 30 times and in these 30-ish times it would be one banter after another up to 3 in a ~30 minute period then be completely silent for 6 or more hours (spent 8 hours in the Exalted Plains with (Cass, Varric, Solas) and had them talk maybe 3 times all an hour before I left said area). Banter seemed to trail off after I acquired Skyhold (not sure if it's related or not). Going to try switching up my teams and see if that helps. I mean, banter is certainly there, just incredibly sparse.

Given that people are finding workarounds via using various systems, I suspect there's a systemic issue and those that aren't affected are mostly lucky (or that they at least happen enough to not take notice).

Me again! On my phone so typing up my findings might go ****** up. This is a brand new playthrough so I don't have more than the two camps I unlocked this past two hours available in the Hinterlands. Nor do I have any other party members.

7pm crossroads cleared. Jumped back to haven and to hinterlands again
Sat in camp No music just bird song
Decided to head to horse man at 7.15
Solas commented about helping refugees.
Still no music or banter just sound effects
7.30 got horse and camped mounted dismounted and rested then sat idle.
Music played!
Gone after 2 minutes. Back to silence and birds.
Music back a minute or two later
Still no banter though
Music swelled at 7.35
7.36 BANTER I spy with Cass and Varric.
7.38 Changed audio to tv instead of stereo
Cass spoke up about it not being a war and then all my quests came through as complete and music started to play.
Still keeping them idle.
Music at 7.42 swelled and died after three seconds.
7.47 Cass and Solas banter.
Bird sound no music for the time being
7.49 music played and then died after 5 seconds
Music swelled again at 7.53 for a few seconds
7.54 Varric and Solas banter
Music at 7.56 gone after a few seconds
7.58 Mounted I mounted rested
Paused game to cook
8.07 unpause and music played for ten secs
8.09 music playing for about 20 secs
8.12 music swelled
8.15 turned audio to night got music immediately and then a Solas Varric banter
8.16 another banter with Solas and Cass!
8.19 music swelled gone after about ten seconds
8.20 changed camera speed in options.
8.21 changed audio to headphones
Got music a second or two later - just another swell
8.25 music swell of ten seconds
8.28 new music plays never heard this track before. But just another swell of a few seconds
8.31 music swell
8.34 music swell
8.35 changed back to home theatre in options
8.37 Called horse. Got swell of music
8.38 Varric and Solas banter
8.39 swell of music
8.42 music swell
8.45 music playing
8.45 Mounted Unmounted rested
8.46 going for a wander to grab another camp
8.49 took out a rift and got music only a swell then carried on walking toward new camp
8.50 reached new camp and set it music playing
8.51 moved to stand in water near waterfall idle didn't rest though.
8.53 music swell
8.55 mount rest thing then stand idle. Get music right away just a short swell
8.59 music swell

This is A LOT more banter than I am used to. And music too. Mount-resting seemed to work a bit but so did cycling/changing the audio settings from stero to tv to night whenever banter got dry.

How long is music supposed to play for when it does come on? I get it for no more than 20 secs my average isles like 3 seconds before it cuts out...

Hope this helps. I will continue to test.

I've only given it 20-30 minutes, however the fast travel>mount>dismount>rest combo seems to be doing something.  I've played 80 hours across a bunch of characters and that chuck of time was the most banter dense by far.

Never made a post here before, but just wanted to provide some more feedback in case it's useful! I've only just discovered that this is a bug, which is both disheartening and encouraging.

I'm playing the Deluxe disc edition for PS4, a little over 50 hours into my playthrough (custom world, male elf, British voice). I've had, at most, 10~12 instances of party banter so far, not counting random lines triggered by discovering something or when your companions drop heavy hints ("Let's take a look around."). I've NEVER experienced any interactive banter, except for the ones directly related to quests. I didn't even realize companions had combat dialogue, either; the only times they've said anything is when they're low on health or if someone in the party goes down.

Thank you to everyone who has been playtesting and offering possible workarounds. I'm going to try the fast travel + mount/dismount + rest thing when I get home tonight, and hopefully that will give me some banter. I'll try to keep track of my results and share it here, in case it helps!

That reminds me. In all the hubbub, I never did mention it, but combat audio is potentially glitched for me, too. When someone is low on health there is chatter but I think that's it.
