Ha, I chose to remain silent, too! Sheesh, Bioware, I was going for character melodrama, not a bonus gameplay feature!

I went back and briefly experimented again - Dorian/Bull/Sera didn't trigger again in the Hinterlands for ages, but when I went to the Emerald Graves for the very first time, Dorian/Bull started just outside of camp, followed by Dorian/Sera about five minutes later, followed by Dorian/Bull about ten minutes after that - then they stopped bantering. If I'm getting any banter at all in my game, it seems to be triggered by Dorian or Sera. It's interesting that Sera's getting a lot of dialogue in some people's games, but is completely silent in others.

(Thanks for keeping an eye on the thread, Allan!)

It seems to me that everyone's character combos really has nothing to do w/ the root issue. It could all be one gigantic selection bias since ppl are actively choosing to use Iron Bull/Dorian/Sera BECAUSE they're supposed to be the most talkative, whether true or not. In all honesty, I doubt Bioware would make certain characters more talkative than others just b/c they were the more extroverted-type personalities. I would imagine every character is supposed to have just as much dialogue as anyone else in the game. I just really don't think it has anything to do w/ the characters tbh...

My Sera did only one banter with Blackwall in about 3 hours of scouting the Hinterlands, the one regarding the duke and his bowels, then nothing, a deafening silence broken only by Blackwall commenting on good place for camp. I have a friend who is playing the game on pc and who isn't experiencing the bug, she told me her party never shut up and that the banter between Vivienne and Blackwall is sooo funny   She's definitely playing another game, a far better game than the one I'm playing and I'm starting to be pissed off

The dialogue I did get seemed to occur randomly. I got a couple banter events in Hinterlands with Cass/Solas/Varric in the first part of the game, but they were hours apart. The other banters occurred in Emerald Grove and Sword Coast.

idk whether it's more infuriating or disheartening. maybe equal parts both? this just seems like such a stupid bug...it doesn't even make sense to me since we have yet to find a common denominator, but there HAS to be one that we're missing.

I know what you mean. I feel exactly the same way. Party banter has always been one of my favorite parts of DA.

Mines is incredibly inconsistent. Sometimes I have more than 1 banters in a short amount of time and then maybe an hour or 2 until I get my next one

I really wish a dev would re-comment here and give us some info...either an update or insight into how the banter mechanics actually function so we have some framework to try and fix this instead of trying crazy things blindly. I've tried posting on the FB page as well but haven't gotten a dev response.

My party banter is also rare but I don’t know if it is intended or not so can not say if it's a bug.

I play on PC.

This is my biggest problem with the game! I'm playing on PC, clunky controls - well, I get used to it after a while, but total silence in a game that'a all about companions and dialogues - it's too frustrating. And not only conversation between party members, but overall battle sounds like: "Oh!", "Ah!", "That was a hard fight!" or something that keep the feeling of a living world. I actually miss Fenris's "We have to move on" :( .

I tried to repair the game via Origin - well, after 20 min of gameplay I recieved 2 dialogues with Sera, I hope it will remain this way!

I agree, the character combos don't seem to be causing the issue, and the writers wouldn't have given reduced content to certain characters. I know there's tons of dialogue that was supposed to trigger that I haven't heard. (Vivienne and Blackwall, for example.) I've definitely been mixing it up a lot, I've just been testing out Sera/Dorian/Bull as it's the first time in the entire game I've gotten some consistent banter. Sera and Dorian seem to trigger Blackwall and Bull, but put when I put Bull or Blackwall with other characters, they won't say a thing. I've only gotten one banter out of Vivienne (spent seven hours taking her everywhere, and mixing up the parties), and only one out of Cole. Mixing in Cass/Varric/Solas hasn't helped either, as they've seem to have stopped talking as well. I don't think Varric has contributed to any banter in the last 20hrs, and I've used him a lot.

Absolutely, and knowing it is a bug infuriates you more!! And ppl who find out its a bug are your best fans so way to go :P

I would second the request for an official confirmation of this as an issue and path to resolution...

Repaired the game and ran around for an hour. Still no dialogue, wondering why I spent 60 dollars to play on an empty MMO server.

So after reading this thread, I played for about 2 hours after repairing the game and received only one banter, between Blackwall and Vivienne (right after a fast travel). Now that I know this is a bug, I can't stop thinking about it and it actually bothers me a lot how quiet my party is. I didn't give it much thought before since I was so immersed in the game, now however, it's all I think about. Oh man...

Allan is a dev (not just a mod) and he did say he'd look into it.  He probably went to bed a few hours ago, but knowing him, he'll give us an update.

Speaking of which, the only things I haven't tried now is reinstalling the game, and rebooting my computer.  I'll try the latter next, but otherwise I'm running out of ideas.

This is what I have and haven't done on this latest test dummy, another dwarven rogue archer.  This was after yet another repair attempt:

1) Deleted and recreated a new world state, using the same options

2) Barely looted anything during the very beginning, except for the nice hat right before the end of the Temple sequence at the beginning.

3) Choose a couple of different answers than last time.

4) Acquired, but did not equip the dragon weapon and armor set.

5) Immediately turned around after the first Haven cutscene to talk to the War Council.

6) Immediately went to the Hinterlands and to Harding's camp.

7) Did not go to the Crossroads, or talk to anyone else.

8) Waited about 20 minutes at that first camp.

The result?  Varric made a single comment about 2 minutes after the end of the conversation with Harding.  He made a comment about the refugees reminding him of Kirkwall during the riot.  Otherwise, there was only complete silence save ambient sounds and music.  I'm feeling really disheartened right now.  I've got some more ideas I'm going to try, but not for tonight.  Tonight, I'm just saying "screw it" and getting ready to go to bed.

Hey guys, I seem to have found a semi-successful solution, for me at least.

So I have been having the same problem as you guys, 37 hours in, about 6 or 7 party banters so far, regardless of the zone.

Thankfully, the maker has rewarded my faith in him and guided me to a certain area in the Hinterlands : "Hafter's woods".

In the area, I get party banter every 5-10 minutes or so.I can't guarantee this will work for you, and it is still EXTREMELY annoying that in every other zone I go everything is so quiet, but I find running around Hafter's woods for hours time well spend, because I love the banter.

Anyways, I hope it helps

I appreciate the thought, but even that area was quiet for the literal two hours of solid game time I spent there.  I checked too.  Dorian and Blackwall had one banter and that was it.   Nothing between anyone else.  One line between Cass and Varric in the entire zone on my first character, and I've been told that they have a lot to say to each other.    I spent a lot of time in that part of the zone, since there is a lot of good stuff to harvest for crafting.

Anyhow, good luck to the rest of you guys if you can hopefully figure out a solution.   :)

At this rate, I might just put the entire game on hold until there is a sign of a possible fix.  And that could take awhile.  What a scripting nightmare for the poor QA team.

I've been hit by this one too. 60 hours in I think I've had maybe 15 banters trigger? The majority of that was Cass/Solas/Varric in the first few hours in the Hinterlands. I think I had two instances of banter on the Storm Coast, zero in Val Royeaux/Forbidden Oasis/Western Approach. I've also experienced several banters triggering in rapid succession after fast travelling to a camp, followed by long periods of silence. PC digital standard edition, elf male rogue, British voice.

It might not have helped me, but it could very well help others.  For what it's worth, I do appreciate you trying to help.  <hug>

And agreed.  :(

Noticed Dorian, Solas, Cole and Sera have unique banter for the exalted marches, might be worth a try if you're desperate and might even cause the rest to kick in.

Great Scott, y'all put in overtime while I was asleep. I'm really happy to see so much experimentation and exchange of data. This is indeed a scripting nightmare to tackle, it seems, and every little bit helps. Natashina, I'm feeling as you are, but remember, deep breaths. :P We'll get through this.

I'm glad Allan is on the case and I'm glad he's got a wider sample space to work with now as well. And I am, selfishly, hoping this is given overall priority. We'll see.

I do wish this realization hadn't made so many people suddenly feel so apathetic about the game, even if I confess to a small smile as I saw that the banter is such a crucial part of DA for so many of us. We obviously have very strong attachment to the mechanic as it fleshes out the characters so very much. I just wish this wasn't the sprt of bug that takes players out of the beautiful world so thoroughly.

I'm sry everyone on this board is having such a terrible experience w/ this issue. I really do hope someone can figure this out ASAP. I've already considered this playthrough a scratch...I'll just use it to check out the areas and the main story so I can custom my decisions a bit better the 2nd time around when - hopefully - the issue is resolved. Again...40+ hrs is wayyyy to far in to just start over or quit....

If it helps, I'm not ready to rage.  I know from years of playing games that sometimes, there are bugs that a few in a million players might find that even the best QA team might not encounter.  I still love the game, and the company.  Knowing me, I'll pick up my original character again.  The core story and the rest is very good overall.   :)

I know I need some sleep first before I play again though.  :P
