My current playthrough is confusing the heck out of me. I had banter fairly regularly yesterday (just started the hinterlands), but today there was only one in the two hours I did the hinterlands. And I'm doing the whole travelling through war room/keep journal, codex and inventory clean.

I'll try to play later again, maybe it was just a bad start today.

So I restarted the game. Haven't had much banter yet and I'm still in the Hinterlands. There was like one between Cass and Solas, one between Varric and Solas and one between Varric and Cass.

Do you guys think that simple lines count as banter? Like I had Vrric say "I'm up **** creek now" and Solas say something short about mages, but these weren't location specific because I reloaded right before they happened and they didn't just happen again at the same point.

Also, when I got the war room at Haven I actually pressed B to back out before I went to the hinterlands. Are people suggesting that this breaks party banter?

Personally I think that the one-liners do count as banter. And it's only meant to be the Skyhold War Table that affects banter; the one in Haven doesn't.

For the last few days my group has been very chatty. I've been using the war table "fix" and I've gotten banters every 10 to 15 minutes. Makes me sad since now it feels like Dragon Age. Ahh all the stuff I have missed.. but won't start a second character before this gets fixed.

Screw this. After 3 playthroughs with about 20 banters between them, I'm giving up. I'll use a mount from now on because that banter just isn't going to happen and I'm wasting hours walking everywhere in silence (aside from footstep and jumping sounds)

:(

Varric and Cassandra are constantly chatting in my playthrough, honestly, I wish they'd shut up, its the same old **** over and over again. I never knew Varric was such a whiny ******.

Nothing seems to work for me. I did the journal/codex cleaning once and it seemed to work for 5 minutes. Now, 10 hours into the game, and I haven't heard a single thing from my companions yet. I'm not even getting them in (very) sporadic, big clumps like I did in my first playthrough. It's just straight up silence.

So I tried all of the different suggestions in the OP and I now have music in every location except Val Royeaux.  I think the trick with fast traveling from the war room and clearing out the unread entries from the journal are what did it.

Still cant get music in VR.  The bard in Haven no longer has any lute music, (or whatever that instrument is), just solo singing.  This was working at the start of the game though.   Also no battle music.  Is there supposed to be battle music?

Some companions seem to be talking now.  mostly cassandra. I still don't think I'm getting the amount of chatter that is supposed to be there though.

It's the same banter or different? It's not normal, according to devs i think, to get the same banter over and over.

Unless you meant about Varric being whiny. :P

Alright, this is new: I just went to the Storm Cost. Changed my party at the camp to Sera, Dorian and Bull, and got surprised by half a banter -- ONLY Bull talked. There was obviously someone meant to answer him, though, I only got half a conversation ("You've heard of us, then", and "That must have been fun", or something).

So, just in case anyone still claims this is not a bug... I'm pretty sure that wasn't supposed to happen. *headdesk*

Apart from this one, I also like Dorian nickname : Sparkler :-D

I love that he calls Iron Bull 'Tiny' xD

Something I did not know til I restarted my game, cos they never spoke to one another...

I find it interesting to note that there appears to be a 'queue' concerning the banter. I had my game paused, but I don't remember the location. It was paused as in I pressed escape and it brought up the main menu.

When I got back and resumed my game; Varric immediately started talking with Dorian in my party. Just thought it might be interesting information to share. The "randomness" ticks away even when your in the menu screen.

I found that alt-tabbing made my music come back, especially during combat. As of banter, following most of those tips, still gets about 2 banters in an 2h session. Though, it's better like that than none as it was prior to the so-called fixes.

Okay, well at the moment I'm not getting loads of banter. Maybe every 20 mins or so and its not always a back and forth convo. Sometimes one character will just sort of voice their opinion on something. Does this sound about right?

I wonder if people who say they're getting banter several times in 10 mins are doing all the sidequests or just getting on with the core story, as more banter being unlocked relevant to overall progression would make sense.

Just did a test. Had Cass, Varrick and Solas and was just idling in the hinterlands.

This was how often I got banter:

9:57

10:08

10:17

10:19

10:40

So I never had to wait more than 30 mins for a bit of banter. Does that sound normal?

Whenever I fast travel from the War Table and then do my thing and then eventually return to Skyhold; I ALWAYS get that damn war table music throughout Skyhold until I visit the table and leave from it without fast traveling.

I just started a new playthrough and like before, I still don't have the banter bug. Maybe this is related to the pc specs? Or something that can be fix by reinstalling the game?

I think people have tried reinstalling before. So I doubt that's it. PC specs are a possible issue. But not likely. Still doesn't explain why it happens on every other system though.

Your longest wait was 11 minutes. If that's normal for you then you definitely don't have the bug.

Sat in Hinterlands for nearly 2 hours ,with my party, while typing something up on my laptop. Nope not even one dialogue banter, or even music interlude. Just sad Bioware...just sad.

How far into the game are you? And are you using your regular party or a combo you don't use? Using any of the workarounds?

My longest was 20 mins. This is pretty much what I was getting before I started over and I thought this is pretty sparse. Feel super sorry for the people who aren't even getting it this much.

About 10 hours in, only have Varric, Cass and Solas. Not got to skyreach yet, as I like to take my time and explore. Only workaround i've used is not having much save files.

Have you had any banter before though? I was at about the same point as you seem to be before I restarted and I had a decent amount of banter early on, but I got the feeling I'd used up all the available banter between those 3 characters up to that point. Bioware have said you can use all their dialogue up to a certain point.
