I'm afraid to play the game because of this bug.  I hope this doesn't turn into another situation like it did with DA 2, where there was literally a bug that broke the game, and they never did find a solution for it.

About 10 hours in, only have Varric, Cass and Solas. Not got to skyreach yet, as I like to take my time and explore. Only workaround i've used is not having much save files.

Try getting a new party member and sticking them into the party and seeing what you get? You might have naturally run out of banter for that combo if you haven't progressed the story or done new zones.

The offline + war table trick has worked absolute wonders in my case!  In 45+ hours I had gotten maybe 10 companion-companion banters, mostly near the beginning of the game.  As soon as I started doing the war table thing, banters started firing off all the time, more music was playing, and I was hearing more of the combat noises than before.  I got a few one-liners about the current quests or the environment even while bugged, but it truly was like night and day once I tried the fix and looking at the log I've been keeping makes me so happy!

The most interesting part to me is that I've been using the same party for the majority of the game: Bull, Varric, and Dorian.    I'm now at 60 hours.  Since Bull and Dorian became available, I only switch them for a companion quest for someone else that requires their presence.  I think I heard MAYBE two or three banters between Bull/Varric/Dorian in all the time I played until I tried the fix.  Once I did the fix and banter started happening, it seemed like I was hearing banters that should have been at the beginning of the game, given that I'd been running with them and only them for tens of hours.  I'm really hoping that this means I haven't entirely missed out on the banters between them that should have played and that I'll still hear all available banter.  I want to switch my party, but in the interest of seeing how many banters I get from them, I'm going to keep just the three of them for the remainder of my playthrough.

Edited to remove some unintentional but potentially spoilerish details.

If you read the latest Mark Darrah tweets you will see him comment that its not based on a timer; its RNG. Completely RNG. Half the posts in this thread are essentially invalidated because of said tweet.

This is probably why they said they couldn't reproduce it. Its like me raiding in WoW for five months and not getting a drop. RNG. Them not being able to reproduce it is much more believable now since this information has come to light.

The only way it would be a bug or glitch is if you did not get a single banter ever and even then Bioware has not commented on what they do not consider to be banter. We are up *expletive* creek and without a paddle.

What they need to do is lower the RNG bracket so it happens more often or specifically patch in a timer. The first is probable...the latter is not.

Sucks but that is essentially what its going to boil down to.

I don't remember reading anything about this/I don't feel like rereading 100+ pages of the thread.

I started a new playthrough when I started reading about the banter bug on here, because I'm at least a little positive that my first character encountered it.

This second character's banter was going fine up until I reached the bit with the Hinterlands Crossroads.  I think I had like 2 conversations Varric-Solas and Varric-Cassandra.  Recruited Mother Giselle and the problems started.  Because I ran around lost before heading to get the horse guy.

So I've been keeping my journal/codex/inventory as free of little stars as possible.

I decided to suck up the silence (AKA speed through until I get to Skyhold) and just started In Your Heart Shall Burn.  And suddenly I completed all the Haven quests (which I completed before heading to the Hinterlands)- heard the noise and everything.

=/  I only mention it because keeping the little star thing gone was one of the fixes, and it appears that even though I had viewed those quests and marked them all as viewed, they didn't register.

Ah, okay.  Thanks :)

It wasn't against Vordish at all.  I've just seen so many "Well, David Gaider/Allan/Mike Laidlaw said this," posts that I tend to ask for links.  Sometimes, stuff gets misremembered.  Vordish was right on the money, more or less.

Still, it sounds quite odd to me.   I was told that banter doesn't trigger at camps by a dev....yet, the majority of the banter test video I did last was at a camp.  Where I was averaging a banter around every 15-20 minutes.

So yeah, I'm back to being confused as hell.

Can someone give me a rough estimate on how longit takes to get Skyhold. I haven't got there yet. Still in the Hinteralnds. About to build the three watch towers and see Master Dennet.

Took me little over 20 hours. I skipped a lot of stuff though.

My best guess is that a timer does tick down and once the timer is over the RNG aspect kicks in. If it passes...then you hear banter. If it doesn't then the timer starts ticking off again.

Mark Darrah didn't say it didn't have a timing aspect...he said it wasnt only a timer exactly. This explains why some people can go for hours without hearing a banter but other people get them every 10m.

It also explains why some people say they get so many banters and then everything is suddenly dead quiet; they used up all the banter.

It technically works....its just not consistent and varies wildly.

Anyone that has seen me post knows that I always strive to be positive to BioWare.  I am also enjoying the game despite some of the issues.

However, I gotta say it: The RNG in this game is pretty bad.  With loot, with conversations...it seems to have pretty darned low odds of being in the favor of the player.  I'm not trying to whine too much here, but I agree.  The consistency is awful, and is one of the few things that are truly detrimental to my gameplay.

He did say it's RNG. But RNG also means that on a long enough timeframe, the average interval between banters should be roughly the same for everyone. If I throw 2 normal 6-sided dice, I might get 2 points on one throw while someone else might throw for 12 points. But if we keep throwing dice long enough, both of our averages will end up being 7.

So if banter fires at a random interval where some people are getting one very regularly and others are hardly getting any, in the end the average interval between banters should be about the same for everyone. Reports show that this is not the case: some players have constant banter throughout their entire game while others only get a handfull during theirs. So there's obviously more going on than RNG.

Random chance means that the next banter could fire in 10mins or 30. So that's absolutely true. However, consistently having banter fire 30+mins apart makes it NOT a random event. The probability of that happening multiple times in a row is infinitesimally small.

Not sure if this has been reported yet, but I figured out something with the bard.

I kept fast travelling from the war table in haven to the hinterlands and back. Then I went to the bard and it unlocked a new song she was singing. I kept repeating this process and eventually she stopped giving me songs. She just stands there now. I wonder if its because these are all the songs she is scripted to play up until this point or not.

Also, do you have to get the mount. I just finished the watchtowers and got the mount. I got on it once and then got right off incase it is causing anything.

You should be Lvl 8, then you're good to go. Just proceed with the main quest.

Also people, please, can you stop the banter spoiler? Obviously many of us did not hear the banter you are referring to, and I'd rather experience it in game than read it here what the companions say. Thank you.

I bombed around until I hit level 10 before I did that part of the quest.   While level 8 is good, if you want to tear through the sequence, about level 10 works well.

Edit: I played a bit earlier.  I'd probably still be playing, but I'm coming down with strep and going to bed early.  I wanted to mention that out in the Exalted Plains, Solas and Cole were talking almost constantly after a computer reboot.  I'd say close to every 5-10 minutes.  It was nuts.

And the game dev that decided that precise platforming to get to the shards in the Exalted Plains with crap PC controls seriously needs a reality check.

Then this is a super easy fix. Just make the banters more common. Problem solved.

Why the hell would they do this by intention ? That genuinely pisses me off.

Thing is, banters fire just as much for bugged players as they do for non-bugged players (some guy on Reddit checked this by hacking into his game and detect the banter triggers). They just don't play/get suppressed for bugged players.

So making them more common wouldn't fix anything.

I started a new playthrough while employing most of the workarounds.

So far my game behaves like it should. There are even some comments after battle about the enemies we just fought, but i can't tell if that is random or supposed to happen the first time you fight in certain locations. Being unable to tell if it's scripted or random is a good thing anyway.

The game feels much better now, the personalities of my party members actually play a role when i pick who to take with me. Before, they felt like skill templates with different armor skins. It's a shame a lot of people will play through this with the banter/music bug and never even suspect something is wrong. They'll just see a game that is still good, but worse than it actually is.

That's the worst part...most people loved the game despite the banter bug...imagine how much it would of livened up their experience if they actually had banter. I'm starting to think this bug might be so pervasive that more people don't know they have it than are complaining. It's so easy to get wrapped up in all the things you can do and not realize you are getting no banter, but good lord once you realize you have the bug it sucks the fun out of exploring immensely.

Btw. I am trying a new playthrough of experimenting. This new character I just made has been in the hinterlands for 3 hours and has had 2 banters...Is that most definitely still the banter bug? I'm wondering how many banters someone who doesn't have the bug got in hinterlands b4 they ever went to VR and got more companions. I get the eye spy and conclave banters between varric and cassandra, both within 10 minutes of each other, and sicne then nothing for hour +.

I made a new qunari character and have had 1 banter in 6 hours. I'm starting to get pretty angry at this point.

I feel you. Over the past 4 or 5 days i've spent more time trying to fix the banter bug than actually playing. Just gonna put the game down till whenever it gets fixed. Maybe I'll try the multiplayer out or mess around with the character creator. It's way too draining to try to maneuver around this banter bug when no one has any idea how it works or what is causing it.

I hope whenever they fix it they have a way to tell which banters didn't fire off...my favorite character is 40+ hours in and has probably had less than 5 banters. I hope it doesn't end up being that all the banter has fired off, but it just hasn't registered and I will never hear it agian.

Just a quick update after I got my game fixed (see one of my previous posts that are buried somewhere in this thread :P). I used the trick that involves clearing your journal from any 'new' entries (any with a star in front of any entry).

What I've noticed;

  • After completing a quest, certain quests DO NOT give the 'Quest Completed' update. After this, my banter/music bug invariably returns.

  • Certain quests update improperly. Example; Requisition quest to gather 5 iron and 5 Onyx. Once you gather some iron, the quest is supposed to update on your screen, under your active quest. Sometimes it hangs and is only updated in your active quest log. Much like checking off completed quests that don't properly finish, after you select that quest from your log and exit the menu, the quest update pops onto your screen. I haven't noticed if the bug is activated by not clearing quest updates, but it could (doubt it though, because my banter never stopped when doing such fetch quests).

  • Offline/online doesn't seem to matter for me.

What I am currently doing is simply access my journal after every completed quest, check my 'Completed Quests' log and check if there are any 'new' icons. I shouldn't have to do it, but it's not exactly that much work (takes like 5 seconds).

There should actually *never* be a 'new' icon in that log. Normal completed quests NEVER have such an icon in front. Only when it fails to officially complete with the complete quest message and the gong sound-effect. This is why I honestly believe this is (one of) the root cause of this bug. The game simply doesn't recognize your quest progress and is stuck trying to validate quest completion. And considering banter and even music (yes, some music changes based on progression) are most likely closely tied to the validation of your quest completion, AKA progression, it could simply be waiting for quest validation to go through before firing off more banter.

I tried a new playthough which seemed to start off completely unbugged. I travelled to the Hinterlands and spent about 5+ hours there just questing and exploring, not progressing the story at all. While I was there I had banter trigger between Solas, Cass and Varric 20 times, none of it ever repeating.

So while it is possible to completely exhaust all the banter certain companions have, it's actually more difficult than some of us are starting to believe. Not sure if this is good news or bad news..

Yes! I was testing this yesterday as well.
The journal is bugged to hell.
I was also doing that requisition quest, I was stuck in the update window with 4 iron even though I kept mining it. I went into my inventory and unchcecked all the "new" icons. Exited the in entory and suddenly the quest updated to completed and I could turn it in.

This happens more often when I uncheck the "new" icon next to already completed quests, they suddenly update on my main screen as completed.

It's all very....odd and something is definitely up.
