Well I'm "happy" to report that the val reyeux thing helps. The music. It doesn't help banter one SINGLE BIT, but hay, at least now I can whistle a merry tune. My characters are still speechless marionettes, however. I've heard maybe 4 dialogues in about 4 hours.

Has anyone had the sound glitch where it there is garbled sound from the party instead of banter?

I have been getting this quite a lot recently and as there are 105 pages in this thread I was hoping that whoever was monitoring this thread might be able to let me know..

I have had Dorian, IB and a random rogue in my group and it sounds like they are trying to banter but its  all just garbled nonsense that I can only hear very faintly unless i move my camera close to a character.. its quite bizarre and I havent found anyone posting things anywhere about it...

Ive also had limited to no party banter since I started playing and was chatting with a mate about this issue, could I maybe have downloaded a corrupted patch when I first purchased the game? Like has it been suggested or looked at by anyone testing game bugs/issues?

I'm pretty sure I’ve read all pages and I don’t recall such a report from earlier. Cut off, or very low volume, but not garbling. Is it reproducible? Did you try to update your sound drivers?

I've had that garbled noise issue happen once in the Hinterlands with Dorian. (There were no enemies nearby, no shards - the voice was deep and British, definitely Dorian.) Didn't know what was happening the first time I heard it, and couldn't understand quite what he said at all, it was the weirdest thing.

I'm finding that sometimes my party talks immediately after a fade rift close. Anyone else have that?

SO I saw a thread early this morning saying that if you go to a new area with two manual saves. make a new save. Wait for an autosave. Delete the new manual save. Wait for another autosave and then load the autosave it would fix it for the entire time you're in that area. I can't find the thread now.

I'm probably 100 hours in at this point, or close to it, but just made it to the Western Approach. I gotta say I don't think I was hit with the "bug" quite as hard as others, the "fixes" helped me in other areas with banter and music, but the Western Approach does seem oddly quiet except for environment/mission-related triggers. 1 random, unrelated banter in an hour. Seems unusual for me compared to areas like the Hinterlands or Emerald Graves where my banter seemed okay (after war table travel). I wonder if companions are meant to be quieter in some areas than in others? Long breaks of silence occasionally suits the mood to be honest, so it's hard to tell what's by design and what's actual error.

[edit]

I also want to add that, while I feel like I get maaaaybe 40-50% as much banter as I'm "supposed" to, I have yet to get an interactive banter. How common are these occurrences?

Yes, occasionally. It's probably the case that banter gets triggered during the fight but that it gets delayed to fire once combat is over. It leaves me wondering if the banter system doesn't always register combat being over and that's what's preventing it from firing banter. Maybe there is something special about closing rifts that causes the game to properly recognise that combat is over - it could be something simple like the rift-closing animation that does this, since it's an ability that requires being out of combat.

It's usually after regular (non-rift closing) combat that banter dries up for me, after all - that is, until I get a party wipe, at which point continuing from the last autosave is pretty much guaranteed to fire banter immediately after loading. Which makes me think re-loading causes the game to register combat status properly.

At least that's my current crazy theory...

I'm pretty sure you are 100% likely to get an interactive banner during the entrance of Val Royeaux if you're not bugged and don't interrupt it with something else (which isn't as easy as it sounds since Cassandra cuts it in half if you move too much forward before it goes off).

Huh. Do you mean the first time entering Val Royeaux period, or any time you enter? My first time heading into VR was a while ago and I don't recall getting an interactive banter, but I may have been distracted and didn't notice, which is just as likely. The only time I get a chance for "interactive" banter is when an NPC gets my attention before I've clicked on them to initiate conversation.

Still, seems odd that I haven't gotten anything interactive, regardless of whether I missed it or not the first time in VR. I certainly get nothing any other time I go. It seems my environment/quest-based triggers are fine, but random discussion/commentary happens with varying rareness depending on the area, and never interactively.

The Plains, Hinterlands, and Graves seem to be my banter "hot spots" after the work-around fixes.

My very first interactive banter always on the way to haven at the beginning of the game. Almost every time I restarted I got it.

Hello all. Wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone figure out the causes and/or possible fixes for the bug. I am on my third playthrough, although i never got past crestwood in either of the previous two. The first i abandoned after getting skyhold, the second during crestwood. In total i had about 60-70 hours of play between them, and i experienced the banter bug (or so i think ). During that time i got a total of maybe 20-30 banters not including location or quest comments.

I started the this playthrough on a new computer, so on a freshly installed game. I decided to make a jurnal of all the things the companions say so i could verify if i still have the banter bug or not ( i belive i don't but i am not sure ). I will share the jurnal below so other people can compare their experience.

I will post the first 3 hours of hinterland questing, trying to avoid spoilers as much as possible. The only fixed i could say i used is the war room travel because i went to hinterlands from there direcly.

WARNING . VERY MINOR SPLOILERS ABOUT HINTERLANDS BELOW

Enterd the area at about 14:30. Went directy to do the main quest at Crossroads. Got the quest banter about it being attacked and we should help. During battle got 1 line banters (from Cassandra and Solas) trying to negociate with the attackers. I assume this are quest specific because i got them on previous plays. Finished main quest and started going around picking up sidequests and looting. From now i will post only the times and tipes of banters.

Legend : RB - Regular banter between companions ;

LB - Location banter said usually by one companion ; includes quest location banter but not only

               AB - After battle banter ;

14:58 - RB

14:59 - RB

15:05 - LB

15:12 - AB

15:18 - RB

15:19 - LB

16:06 - RB

16:11 - LB

16:13 - RB

16:14 - RB

16:17 - RB

16:21 - LB

  - Made a pause of about 20 min. As a clarification between 15:30 and about 16:00 i stayed in the south cult stronghold and around, closing the 2 rifts and looting the stronghold. Considering i was level 3-4 and one of the rifts was level 8 it took some time to clear it (and a couple of reloads).

16:50 - LB

16:58 - LB

16:59 - PB

16:59 - RB

17:08 - PB

17:10 - LB

17:24 - LB

17:26 - RB

17:32 - LB

17:33 - LB

17:37 - LB

17:40 - PB

I cleared the south - south-east of the map (taking crossroads as middle point), and the east to the camp there. All this is with Cassandra, Varric and Solas.

Now i am at the "In your heart shall burn" quest, and untill now i got an average of about 4-6 regular banters per hour ( i did go out with different companion ). As for music it goes on and off, but i belive that is intended.

I continued the jurnal to where i am now. If anyone is interested i will post it, but for now the wall of text is long enough.

Hope this helps someone. And sorry for the long post and any spelling and grammatical mistakes (english is not my first language).

So another update from me, my new game got corrupted? So I had to start again. Played for 5 hours, 2 banters.

I don't buy the banter drying up thing. I really don't.

I just re rolled a new char for my second playthrough and I still have banters. Could this be tied to the software we have on our pc? My computer is a little new, just bought it a week before launch of dragon age inquisition.

That's the weird thing and that's probably why they are having such difficulty replicating.  It's across all platforms, so not sure what software would impact the PS4 version, for example...

Software does influence the game for certain. I have a friend that could not run the game above 30 fps with a i5 quad, gtx 970, 16g ram, on low setting , but after a clean format/ windows reinstall, the game stays around 50-60 fps on ultra settings, never going below 35 even in the most crowd intensive areas (redcliffe village, ...), or so he claims.

Had my first instance of repeated dialogue last night - Dorian and Varric took bets on the Inquisitor's success 4 times in 5 hours, haha. At least it's an interactive dialogue, so I could change it a little each time.

I don't know if it's relevent but I also had a pretty obvious case of banter misfiring because I walked into a cave and Iron Bull said "Hmm. Not as many ships as I expected!" And then I laughed for like 5 minutes because I mean how many ships WERE you expecting in the cave Bull??

I tried everything to get banter to work, kinda gave up last night..after having no banter at all. 15 hours in on my 2nd play through. Only in hinterlands/skyhold.

So started playing again this morning (fast traveled from skyhood war table, maybe to see whether it would work after a few failed attempts, still no dice) and thought if no-one speaks might as well ride my mount properly (I only ever just sat on it and dismounted to see if banter would trigger).

So riding my halla for about 5mins after I got off within 5 mins had two banters, like proper non environmental banters. Walk around for another 10 mins nothing so rode my mount again to another quest. Dismounted, again within 3 minutes another banter. I'm going to keep trying and see whether this is temp fix for me. It seems to work if I actually ride my mount and not just mount/dismount immediately. It's not perfect but even if I can get banter after just riding for a bit then I'm happy. Sorry if someone has already said this worked for them. I'm going to test it out more but for me just quickly mounted/dismounted on the mount didn't trigger any banter. I had to go around for a while, this did also start up some of the ambient music for me whilst riding.

I'm on PS4 btw.

My game is behaving really strangely now. I've been testing the Storm Coast on PS4 after applying the offline/journal fixes and this is the general pattern:

Load up the game and so far without failure I get banter almost instantly; sometimes banter is already in progress when the game loads. Then I get one or two more banters within the next few minutes, sometimes instantly after the last one played. Then banter completely dries up over the next hour or two.

It's like the game is playing all the banter I should have got in the hour or two-long dry spell the last time I played and is then playing it all in succession each time I load the game. I only get the initial few minutes of banter the first time I load the save after launching the game; loading saves without relaunching the game still frequently results in one banter, but not several of them in a row. And then afterwards I get silence.

I get exactly the same on Storm Coast on PC. If I save-load after a long silence, I suddenly get the banter on loading, already in progress.

After 121 hours of gameplay I've just experienced a chat I was able to take part in .  It was the first one since that which took place in the prologue....Should I be happy? To be honest, I keep wondering how many talks like this one I've missed so far due to this bug.

Sometimes I wonder if those people who report near constant chatter from their party are experiencing the opposite of this bug.. as in: not as intended. If we go by dev tweets it seems that some periods of silence (30 min) are normal and intended. Stretching 3+ hours of dialogue over 150 hours of gameplay.

I imagine there would be much less complaining if everyone had that version of the bug. At least you're seeing the content.

Interesting thought.... Do you use the tactical camera a lot? I do and have wondered about it... Really anything that interrupts the normal game and audio flow... Tactical cam, journal, map etc... I am more likely to notice that combat dialogue disappears after these activities and reappears after more "wipe/reset" activity. Mount, rest, change party etc.

As far as I remember, Bioware said there's no chance the same conversation happens twice, right? Well, this just has happened to me.
