Pretty sure at this point that the banter and music bugs are unrelated. The fixes for music don't fix the banter. At least, not for me.

New character this morning, eight hours in.  Banter still active at 10 minute intervals.  I'm doing all the workarounds listed in the OP on page one, plus I stayed away from the "mount a horse" quest.  It's possible that that the mount does play a role in the banter bug.  Seems like I've read that may not be the issue.  But just got two banters within 10 minutes after Hinterlands.  Fast travel from war table only.  I do not click on The Hinterlands; I fast travel after hovering my cursor over the location.  Will report back tomorrow after another eight hours of gameplay.

i haven't had banter repeat at all yet, but 32 hours into this file i haven't completed any main quests past getting to skyhold and my situation is just as strange as ever. i don't get it with any real regularity as far as i can tell -- i rarely go for more than an hour without a word, but when banter does happen it just fires off one after the other. i literally had four conversations this morning -- three cole/blackwall and one cole/dorian -- fire off all in the span of five minutes. i had one before that and one after, each within 20 minutes of the four conversations, at which point i headed to the western approach with cassandra/cole/dorian because i needed to do the mage specialization thing. i spent about 45 dead silent minutes in there, with cole and dorian each commenting on the environment once, and when i got out and went to crestwood i had maybe 15 minutes before my cassandra/cole/dorian group started talking again. using journal fix and fast travel from the war room.

i don't know how big of a problem this still is but i feel like something should be done about when it fires off. i hear people saying it should be about 10 - 30 minutes between each, but it's weird that i can get four in five minutes and nothing in an hour.

Well, maybe there's something to the save/load thing. Tried it in Exalted Plains and it immediately triggered banter between Cass and Viv. Mind you, only once...

This is just baffling. 40 min of nothin, then a banter, then another about 8 minutes later, and now two within three minutes. Very confusing.

As far as I remember, Bioware said there's no chance the same conversation happens twice, right? Well, this just has happened to me.

I had this problem too. Cass and Varric banter repeated for me a few times over my 95 hour save (I specifically recall the conversation about her recruiting Cullen occurring about three times). This concerns me more than sparse banter; if it was no/sparse banter I could chalk it up to an audio glitch, but if the banter is repeating what the hell does that mean?

I'm playing it on PC. I hadn't heard party banter for most of the game and then I randomly got some after resting at a camp. Unfortunately it looks like that solution is inconsistent as frequently I still get nothing for hours on end (which I assume is a glitch) even after resting. I'll test with the music (though yeah I think I've been missing that sometimes too). This really needs to get fixed ASAP, it makes questing around a lot duller which is unfortunate considering how much time you spend wandering around in this game.

Wow, yeah and I've had no interactive chats with companions. I've had it with other NPCs but I didn't even know you could get banters with responses. Given how widespread this seems to be I'm really surprised they didn't catch it during testing. That or maybe EA is just continuing their pattern of release a buggy game and patch until its playable.

Unfortunately, I have no idea as well. In my case it was converstation between Varric and Dorian about Inquisitor's  chances of final win.

However, it seems funny they claim there's no bug whatsoever, while we're clearly going through some serious issues during gameplay. I think that theory regarding saves might be valid. I deleted majority of savegames and then saved manually into existing slot- banter occured right after that. But who knows.... the bug can have its roots in all of these theories altogether- war table, saves, mount/dismount etc etc.

This is probably incredibly dumb...but I noticed yesterday in my insane journey to get banter to fix...that after I swung the dragon sword you get from DLC it would make a small sound...but if i jumped within the next 20 seconds a new sound would come out like a delayed fire effect that didn't play when i originally swung the sword. It sounds like it could be something similar to the banter bug in that the sound is getting suppressed until some action takes place.

Or maybe i've just finally gone crazy..

I started my second playthrough and it looks like I have the bug again (11 hours in and only 1 banter since arriving in Haven). None of the workarounds seem to be working for me, but I did do the mount a horse quest, so perhaps it's too late for me. I'm bummed because I was hoping to hear banter this playthrough.

I'm not sure if I'm lucky or if I'm just not experiencing this bug this time, but on my second playthrough I've been hearing a very satisfying amount of banter. At the very least, I'll get a conversation every hour, and at the most I'll hear them talking every ten or twenty minutes.

SO I disconnected from origin servers and did the travel from war table trick and that seems to have resolved some of the issues for me. Music is suddenly appearing and I've gotten a few banters so far. It's amazing how different (better) the game is when you aren't wandering in silence. Of course, the delay between banters can make it difficult to actually test. I've also done the horse/dismount/rest sequence. I can't say whether that helps or not for certain but I do remember getting a banter in the past after a rest so maybe.

I'm planning on doing a second play-through at some point. I think I'll just try skipping mounts entirely (given I barely use mine anyway). Either that or hopefully Bioware will get a fix out the door in some reasonable time-frame. I know which one I think is more likely...

I'm pretty sure I’ve read all pages and I don’t recall such a report from earlier. Cut off, or very low volume, but not garbling. Is it reproducible? Did you try to update your sound drivers?

I am playing on Xbox One, it happens almost every time I have Dorian in the group.. I had IB and Dorian in the group trying to get them to banter and yeah.. nada..

I've had that garbled noise issue happen once in the Hinterlands with Dorian. (There were no enemies nearby, no shards - the voice was deep and British, definitely Dorian.) Didn't know what was happening the first time I heard it, and couldn't understand quite what he said at all, it was the weirdest thing.

I couldnt make out what they were saying to be able to tell.. it was creepy as hell and happens heaps

My banter was regular for the first 65 hours of play-through or so. Then I switched Sera out for Cole (first time having him in the party), went to the Exalted Plains, and now nobody has said anything for an hour. The other two party members are Solas and Iron Bull, and I've only had them together in party for maybe 5-10 hours so I know I'm not out of banter. I still get the occasional location comment from Solas or Bull, but nothing at all from Cole (unless he kills something).

Edit : After another 20 minutes of silent party, I fast-traveled to Riverside Garrison... and Cole initiates some party banter 2 minutes later. Yeah this is going to be a fun bug for you guys to track down.

I haven't played in a few days, and largely abandoned my first game at around 20 hours. Before playing tonite I had a newish game started - about 2 hours in, just started wandering around Hinterlands. My scenario:

- PS4
- Turned off online stuff (PS4 is still connected to Internet, however)
- Clearing codex, journal, and inventory regularly
- Fast travelled using war room
- No horse
- Default party of Varric, Cassandra, Solas

Tonight I played for an additional 2 hours.
- About 6 banters!
- Combat music! (I think, it was drum-heavy and occurred mainly near the crossroads where there are several pockets of combat)
- Ambient music! (To be fair, I think the "combat music" played for a bit post-combat, but I definitely heard a version of the main theme that was different and longer than the 10-second orchestral interludes I had in the previous game)

Now - most of that occurred in the first 1.5 hours. The last 30 minutes was pretty quiet. But I had been meandering in the same area of Hinterlands. I've just unlocked a 3rd camp and gotten enough power to get to Val R. Tomorrow I'm going to wander some more to see if I get banter, and then do the ultimate test of music in VR.

Even if it's all a futile placebo.. oh well.

One thing I did notice was that in my old game, after a while (don't know how many hours) I had an off behavior whenever returning to Haven. When opening the main gates and running up the steps (fist flight before wher Varric stands) - the sound of the gates opening would be delayed, and my character would freeze for a second or two. That's not happening now, I'll see if it starts up again.

The exalted plains feel so buggy. Characthers in my party die, nobody says anything, i have been here for about 3 hours and have gotten 0 banter (one comment from Solas though about some ruins and we should be on guard). No music for the region, and no battle music.

I go to Val Royleaux and there is music, i go to the hinterlands and sera and solas bicker about magic.

I tried everything in this thread, and i cannot figure out what is wrong.

Can you guys try using respec amulet while in a map if it can fix anything? I just used it and I had like 10 banters already in just 1 hour 30.

Previous two posters:  one gets 10 banters in 90 minutes, the other gets no banter in 180 minutes.

At the very least, I'd appreciate BioWare adding in some kind of timer that forces banter to fire if it hasn't done for so a certain period of time. 20-30 minutes would be fine. Even if this is all down to random chance, going in silence for hours defeats the whole point of choosing which companions to bring with you.

A long day of messing about. Probably got 5-7 banters over about six hours. It's impossible, to me at least, to say at this point what is causing them to trigger. Mounting and dismounting and journal check-offs seem like the best bet.

This isn't even a front-page thread anymore. People are giving up on this one. Oh well.

Fast traveling from war room seems to work for me, even without going offline. I'm on PC.

Well since it has been over a week since they've known about it and there's still no update of whether they've found what's causing the problems (if they are actually looking for it that is), giving up is pretty much all we are left with.

An update would be nice, even if it's just to say they haven't found anything yet. Instead, they leave us in the dark.

My banter seems to have improved since I started exploring a new map and handling main quests. I was putting off the main plot line for a while for fear of missing banter and waiting for patches to come out (I wanted to customize Whats-His-Face. But I got impatient and went default, oh well). But I think in restricting myself to areas I've already explored and doing side quests, the areas I restricted myself to are now quieter than areas (such as Emprise) I've only just started. I wonder if in all my testing I've dried up banter in areas I thought were banter hot-spots. Cleaning out Emprise just this morning in the past couple hours I've gotten 3 or 4 banters and my very first interactive conversation in the 100 hours I've been playing. Is it possible some of us who were just getting "rare" banter simply need to press further into the story?

To make a note, I've been fast traveling from the war table and clearing out my journal/codex regularly. But even still, areas that were chatty before are now quieter despite the workarounds. But Emprise has been plenty enlightening for character development. I'm wondering if I even had the bug at all. :\

This is a really long shot, but those of you on the PC - do you use a gamepad? I'm in my second game right now and I swear since about 10 hours, they don't talk anymore. I've tried different parties, always take the long walk to all locations, keep out of the Western Approach - nada, silence, even though I keep the journal/codex/inventory clear of "marked" items.

The only thing I'm doing differently from my first game is using a controller, and disconnecting it gave me the first banter in hours, and a second one 3 minutes after that. Maybe it's just really bad RNG, because I don't see how this could affect anything, but at this point, it has to be something obscure or else someone would have found a solution already.

ETA: And another banter, again 5 minutes later. What?!

ETA 2: And another one... That's 4 banters in 20 minutes.
