Well I found out where the Val Royeaux music went to in my game: The Emerald Graves. Odd tune to here in the middle of the woods.

It’s not the same, but similar :) I liked it, fit the ‘Orlesian villa country’ motif nicely.

So odd you mention that - I had Blackwall make some comment about the vendor stalls in Val Royeaux when we were in the Emerald Graves. That was very odd - I mean maybe he was high, so who knows. :D

just about 140 hours and i just got my first interactive banter with varric and dorian.

i usually get lots of conversations just after i start up my game and then as i continue playing in one section it sort of trails off into nothingness. i just unlocked the exalted wastes in my 60+ hour playthrough, however, and every single time i travel to it through the war table a banter triggers, fairly reliably, within 5 minutes. i've had about 5 conversations in the past hour or so that way, and another two or three while walking around afterwards in addition. i have shouts in combat and clips of music fairly regularly, but my audio cuts out very badly, especially when i'm fighting dragons. i can't think about the fight with the greater mistral without cringing, and not because my team kept dying and i had to solo my way through the fight with my inquisitor knight enchanter.

also, i think there is a remixed form of the val royeaux theme that plays in the emerald graves? just as normal music? it plays for me and it's noticeably different from the val royeaux music, but maybe that's just me.

Played for about 2 hours yesterday, for the first time in two weeks (I stopped playing because of the banter bug). About one hour out in the field, trying every trick in the book, I got two banters. But at least it was Cass and Sera talking to each other for the first time in 10 hours they've been together in my party.

Anyway, stopped playing again. I'll wait for the next patch.

I'm not sure if I have the bug or if I'm just extremely unlucky with my banter RNG. Only way for me to get banter to work now is to do all the workarounds every single time I launch the game and then idle in a safe spot. And even then it doesn't always work.

In my first playthrough of 100 hours I had about 3 instances of banter. I thought that was normal and complained to my friend how stupid it was that BioWare had implemented such a small amount of what I consider one of the core features of Dragon Age series and replaced the funny banter with boring environmental comments. Then my friend got the game... He had funny banter about every 20 minutes.

I decided to start a second playthrough to see if my banter issue had magically fixed itself. I suddenly had banter about once per hour while 100%ing Crestwood. It is to this day the only map I have 100% and I was having tons of fun listening to my companions. When I moved on to Western Approach banter died. I googled and found out WA is just bugged and went on to other maps but my banter never returned. I reinstalled the game yesterday in hopes it might fix things. The first hour I played afterwards I had 2 banters. I've played about 4 hours more since and had no banter. Now I've put this playthrough on halt untill the issues are fixed. I have experience what the banterfull exploration is like and refuse to play without it.

BioWare says they made banter rare to encourage replayability but this is just making me not want to play. The blogpost about banter and music just made me feel like BW tried to fix what wasn't broken and ruined the whole system for a lot of people, neither DA:O or DA2 had these issues after all.

I haven't had any of the other sound issues, just severe lack of banter. So I'm guessing I'm not really bugged but just have terrible RNG when it comes to it. Hoping the fix to increase banter % comes out soon :C

If you only have 3 banters in 100 hours of play, that's not terrible RNG. That's a bug. The thing about RNG is that it averages out over time. One day you may get one banter in an hour, the other you may get 6 in half an hour. But on average banter should fire every 10-15 minutes (according to Bioware). The chances of such bad RNG happening -with the system working as intended- are astronomically small. No one would have such bad luck. Especially not such a large part of the player base.

So yes, you are bugged.

Like you, I tend to get one as soon as I start playing and then nothing the rest of the time. Sometimes if I make an autosave (sleep at camp), I can reload from that and get another banter (since I just started playing...again). But then no banter after that. I'm jealous because my boyfriend gets banter and I can see the subtitles on his pc constantly. He'll get 4x more banter than I get in the same amount of adventuring playtime.

Anyone seeing better behavior since the patch?

Mine started out well, but now in Hinterlands with Cass + Sera + IB, none of them have said a single word to each other in ~2 h.

I  somewhat saw an improvement in my banter since the hotfix (after the patch). I play 4 hour yesterday and get around 7 banter. Before that,  I gone through 115 hour (50 for first character which I had to restart because my elf had a really big head, and 65 for my second), I got a total of around 5 banter. I was really happy yesterday.

Another thought that occurred while being depressed about seeing the bug again: I wonder if there could be a problem where the companions’ conversation states need to be at the same level; e.g., Cass can’t be exhausted of Haven/Skyhold dialogue if Varric isn’t.

I started out with some, not a lot but some, banter while in Hinterlands but after that it went down to nearly zero. I hope they find a fix for this because I've discovered that by missing the banter, we are also missing not only some enjoyable exchanges but also valuable plot information and "hints'. I would've liked to discover that in game rather than by spoiler but what's done is done.

It seems that the patch + hotfix made my banter worse. I usually had quite a bit of it. I played 5 hours today and only had one or two conversations between Dorian and Varric.

It did. I am having a blast with it now. There is a huge difference between my 2 play through.

Though I did change my play style. Taking it slow and leaving hinterlands helped me a lot.

I have a question, do we still need to fast travel from the war table if we want to work around the bug?

The war table "fix" only worked for certain people and not every time. But yeah, the "fixes" haven't changed, so something that worked before has the same chance of still working now.

I never tried the War Table/fast travel method.  Every single time I use FT from the War Table, I come back to to hear the Drums of Skyhold, which gives me a massive headache pretty quickly.  Fine for small doses, but if it goes on for more than about 5 minutes, it hurts.  I'm glad entering and exiting the War Room fixes it, but I'd still like to avoid it anywhere possible.

Since the patch I've noticed banter will fire up at the worst times, which sucks because I really don't get much banter. In 4 hours last night (mostly in Hissing Wastes and Exalted Plains) I got two banters and they both started right as we finished a battle and just as another battle started, so they were interrupted. Soooo annoying when that's the only banter I get to hear...

Before the hot fix hit, I was playing offline to avoid patching, and I was save scumming to try to get schematics. I got a TON of banters, frequently right on reloading. This was in Emprise Du Lion.

Might not mean much, but maybe someone can piece it into the bigger puzzle.

Hmm pretty sure I still have the bug. Spent 1 1/2 hours in Storms Coast with Viv/IB/Sera for first time and all taht was said was how Sera doesn't bring lunch on boats twice.

Just noting here that, as someone who never had a problem with banter not playing before (once or twice per hour was fairly normal), since the patch banter seems to be overly frequent for me (I think I had 3 conversations pop in about 10 minutes of play once).

It seems that the patch + hotfix made my banter worse. I usually had quite a bit of it. I played 5 hours today and only had one or two conversations between Dorian and Varric.

Before the patch I had done a re-install of the game, and was getting decently paced banter.

After the patch....banter is super sparse. And I've been trying to take out teams I normally don't. My default team is usually Cole, Blackwall and IB (playing a mage)

Was out and about with what's supposed to be the 'chatty' team (Sera, Dorian, and IB) and for 2 hours no one said anything other than Dorian making some one liner comment about the area. Last night I was playing (different team make-up than I normally take Cass, varric and Sera), and it took 2 hours for the companions to say ANYTHING....it was a banter.....then nothing for another while so I switched out to Sera, Blackwall and Solas.....Sera made one comment about an Elfy ruin...then nothing again. until I quit playing. *sigh* it was a very lonely playthrough....so I decided to just ignore them and go and do random quests to clear out....(why bother doing themissions that cost power if no one is giong to talk to anyone when you're in a new area/doimg a new thing?) And then ran back to Skyhold to talk to companions so I could actually hear them say SOMETHING. I'm going to run out of things for them to say to me at Skyhold long before I ever run into an issue of banter getting played out if this continues. (I actually think I'm at that point with a couple of characters already)

I've only ever fast traveled out of Skyhold from the War Table (just realized the other day that you could leave Skyhold by the front gate *duh*), or back to Skyhold via the Worldmap.

I understand that with a game that could take 100+ hours to finish and budget limits, that they have to sparse out banter so that you don't have a continual loop of banter, or run out of it in the first 40 hours.....but there really needs to be a better 'timer' for when the banter fires.

Since the patch my banter has been OK, but on a related note to the clearing-out-the-journal fix, my game has now told me I completed the horse racing quest about twenty five times...

So, the recent patch seems to have fixed the bug for me. I started a new save and with a main party of Blackwall, Bull, and Sera I've been getting banter every 30 minutes on average.

Also, get Blackwall and Sera in your party. They have the best banters in the game.

I have 2x the banter as pre-patch. But I can be considered not bugged for single player banter.

But Multiplayer... they just won't shut up, repeating themselves every 10 seconds. DAMP banter too much!

Did anyone try the ham they had at camp yesterday?

You mean the Nugloaf?

I loved their relationship. She made Blackwall happy.  ^_^

And then Sera started bullying Dorian while Blackwall chuckled in support, so she had to go.

So yesterday I got maybe 3 banters in 3 hours, in the Hinterlands and Storm Coast. Not ideal but seems a bit better. I have been getting music everywhere, on a very consistent basis, so that tells me that there's less sound issues overall this time around.

Hinterlands and Storm Coast have historically been very quiet for me, so this is an improvement. Not sure if it's patch related or just getting lucky with this particular character roll.
