Someone somewhere posted that turning the graphics settings to automatic fixed them so I tried. It gave me 6 banters in an hour, which is WAYYYYYYYYYYY more than I have ever gotten naturally or doing any fix. I'd recommend people try it because at this point anything is worth a try, especially when it's so simple.

I set my graphics settings to auto, restarted the game, and then explored hinterlands for an hour and got a bunch of banters between sera/vivienne/IB (three out of the 6 i'd never heard in 180 hours of playing this game...)

I noticed something curious today. I got an itch to play some DAI and ran around playing normally for a few hours. Had no banter during this time, just a few environmental comments. Then I decided to try out the save scumming chest method to get a schematic I could acctually make use of and... I kept getting banter every 10-15 minutes while doing it. In fact I'm still doing it and getting banter. It's rather weird that exploiting the game makes it work normally compared to just normal gameplay o___O

After I'll finally get a schematic I can use (the chests seem to hate me) I'll run around some more and see what happens.

Good to hear that worked! I lowered some of my settings earlier on and it seemed to make a difference... adding support to my theories of this being a priority/memory/processing related issue

I never tried the War Table/fast travel method.  Every single time I use FT from the War Table, I come back to to hear the Drums of Skyhold, which gives me a massive headache pretty quickly.  Fine for small doses, but if it goes on for more than about 5 minutes, it hurts.  I'm glad entering and exiting the War Room fixes it, but I'd still like to avoid it anywhere possible.

@ Natashina I have the same problem, but you can fix it by going to the war room when you come back to skyhold and exiting the normal way. play in skyhold then go back to the war room to exit. takes care of the drums for me and yet still allows you to exit with the supposed fix.

Edited to add: sorry, bad etiquette to post twice

Right, so after getting normal banter while save scumming for an hour (I didn't have any banter before) I decided to update my graphic drivers and I've been having normal banter even while exploring ever since. I do not know what exactly fixed my bug but I for sure hope it stays fixed :D

I played again for 5 or 6 hours today and only had 7 banters. Before the patch I've had that in 2 hours. I actually had a conversation between Solas and Bull where they repeated themselves within 2 minutes.

Spoiler
That never happend before. I've tried almost every trick i've read in here, nothing.

After playing for a couple hours today, I really think it's the presence of combat that's hindering banter the most. I recently did all the quests at the Storm Coast dealing with the blades of hessarian, the darkspawn, and the red templars that move in. I barely got any banters the entire time I played there. After I dealt with them all, I went back to harvest for a little while. I got 5 within a half an hour. It was astounding. I didn't get into combat the entire time and it seemed like they were constantly chatting! I was astonished! I thought maybe it was fluke, so I went to hinterlands and the same thing happened. Zero combat, lots of chatter. I think that's why the western approach is so quiet for most. You can't turn around without hitting a hyena or a vargest or something.

You might be on to something. I got no banter in Exalted Plains for maybe 3-4 hours (beyond those environmental and quest-related comments), then came back later when the place was pretty much empty and Cole suddenly started up 3 banters back to back with the same party members he was adventuring with earlier. Of course I, like, held my breath, touched nothing, and tried not to interrupt the convo.

Sorry for the long post! While I'm going back and forth about the direct fix, as far I can tell without getting too optimistic, my sound/combat soundest/banter is now working 100% as intended - with the joys of RNG and all. The banter can still be sporadic, but it's happening far more organically before. No matter which party combo I put together, everyone will eventually talk to each other - this was very much not happening previously. There are no longer party members who are  dead silent - looking at you, Vivienne and Varric! (Vivienne and Cole had interactive banter, it was my first one. Finally some banter out of Cass/Dorian, too.) There's a definite, noticeable difference. I hope it lasts.

I'm not entirely sure what the fix is, but the most important thing I've noticed in correlation, is that my journal is now working as intended. The quests are auto-completing properly without intervention. I still check the journal constantly, but it's now very, very rare a quest hasn't completed, and I need to manually trigger it. (I haven't even bothered with the codex.) While this has all happened post-patch, what has also happened is that I've been trying to go back and clean up as many quests as I can pre-Act 2 main quests. The Hinterlands/Storm Coast/Fallow Mire only have about one or two quests left. I'm nearly finished with the Emerald Graves and Crestwood. (Over levelled, I know.) I've barely triggered any quests in the Exalted Plains/Hissing Wastes/Western Approach, and what I have started, I've mostly completed.

I would have thought the patch fixed it, but for the first day of playing after the patch installed (4 hrs?) I was getting no banter whatsoever. It was only the day after that when I started cleaning up quests in the Emerald Graves that finally I had banter. I think I had about eight or nine in the space of about 4hrs? I went to Crestwood after that, and noticed the journal was now completing quests properly. All I can stipulate is that the game has less to keep track of, and with resources freed up from keeping track of an MMO-tier amount of quests, it's easier to keep track of everything else. Music and combat soundsets are there 100% of the time, no issues at all.

re: banter and combat, I've noticed that I now always get banter after closing a rift. For the one time I didn't, I had some ambient banter instead. Sub-areas inside regions also seem to help, especially after they've been cleared of enemies. (There's a mini-castle with its own loading screen early into the Western Approach; the Storm Coast has a large enough unlockable sub-region that I'm assuming the majority of the Storm Coast would not need to be loaded at the same time. I think I had three party banters trigger whilst trying to find a bloody key in there.)

The real test will be the dead zone that is the Western Approach, or the Exalted Plains.

Even with it working as intend, the RNG gods can be pretty absurd. I've had three occasions where I've walked the up and down the length of the map of the Hinterlands with no banter despite no combat or NPCs (areas cleared out), and yet sometimes I'll be going from combat to combat, and banter will trigger. Sometimes just as I start combat! The funniest issue I had was that banter triggered right when I swapped Blackwall from the party, so Dorian had a prolonged one-sided conversation with himself. I've also had banter repeat itself for the first time, which was a bug I'd never gotten previously.

For those whose sound/banter is now working, is your journal quest-tracking working correctly, too? Again, I don't know if the patch fixed the journal, or clearing out a lot of quests before adding more that has helped.  Bolding for understandable TL;DR! - Either way, the journal/quests auto-completing without intervention and party banter/sound firing properly seems to going hand-in-hand 100% in my game.

That's the same impression I have. I'm now walking the Hissing Wastes where combat tends to be rare, and I get about three to five times as much banter as earlier in the Emerald Graves, and some of those banters sound like early-game stuff where companions sound each other out, rather than late-game stuff as would be appropriate currently in my game.

Banter seems completely messed up and I'm afraid that noone have a fix for this and devs still did not reproduce the bug, sure they said they will increase the chance of banter popping up but that still wont fix the weird issues we all have.

I tried the 'set graphics to automatic' trick and it fixed..well, only one thing, that I could see: the nonstop wartable drums in Skyhold. Then later on, the game crashed and the drums came back. Oh and, no banter in 5 hours.

No hurry on this fix bioware, take your sweet frickin time.

Default companions (Solas, Cassandra, Varric) bantered a lot, so was my second set (Sera, Bull, Vivienne)...but noticed after the patch, all went radio silent.   I tried clearing the asterisks in the journal (current quest/collections/completed quests) as suggested.  Also tried swapping companions frequently, enabling subtitles, etc.  That seems to kinda work. had 1 banter for 6 hours of game play yesterday -- in new territory too. I even left my party in camp for a couple of hours while I read some books -- didnt hear a bleeding banter.

One of the things I enjoyed in DAO and DA2 are the banters so please fix.

Looks like you might be onto something. On my first character roll, I had to manually untick Completed Quests, and I had no banter as well. On my new post-patch 2 roll Completed Quests unticked automatically, and I had a lot of banter early on in the Hinterlands, but now the banter has stopped, and the journal is bugged again. Was so sure it would work this time. :(

I've started my fourth playthrough today (don't judge) and am determined to REALLY take my time this time. So, running around in the Hinterlands without having advanced the main story, only Cass/Solas/Varric in party. And I get frequent banter this time! The first couple of lines I had heard before, but now I get banter that is completely new to me! After already having played 200 hours all in all! YES!!! I keep Origin offline and my journal/codex clear, other than that, no workarounds. I have to manually untick a lot of the quests, but as long as I do, it works fine.

Now let this hold, please!

One has to give it to Bioware though - this really does add replay value to the game

Zero combat, lots of chatter. I think that's why the western approach is so quiet for most. You can't turn around without hitting a hyena or a vargest or something.

I don't think that this is the reason for the missing banter in the Western Approach (or the Exalted Plains for that matter). Even if you idle around, no combat, there is no banter, period. I've also tried to force banter by harvesting in peace or simply idling around, but if the bug is present, you won't get any banter then either.

What I think should happen (and what does happen to me a lot) is that banter that should fire during combat gets suspended and fires after combat ends. I have had a lot of banters that started right after combat ends (characters put their weapons away) or closing a fade rift. Today, I was in combat a LOT (just started the Hinterlands, it's full of Mages/Templars bashing their heads in at the beginning) and I play on Nightmare so the fights took a lot of time... still, frequent banter. Of course this is only anecdotal evidence and does not say anything one way or the other but if combat were the reason we all wouldn't get any banter until we cleared the regions, and I don't see that this is happening.

Urgh, that really, really sucks, I'm so sorry. I really hope it works again for you. The only thing I can think of is that I've been culling the amount of quests in my journal before adding too many more, so the game might be having an easier time keeping track of everything. On the other hand, people with 150hr+ playthroughs with banter issues would have finished a lot of quests too (admittedly whilst adding a lot more?), but I guess I've been trying not to unlock too many more before I finished off the ones I had. Crestwood and the Western Approach are pretty much done, and the Emerald Graves doesn't have too much left either. The patch didn't really help me until I started to clean up quests (it went from no banter at all for a day after the patch, to suddenly working correctly), so I'm not sure what the exact fix is here! A combination of both? Frustrating.

I can also confirm for no banter in the Western Approach. I think I spent about five hours there? There is some music, but it definitely felt more like my original soundless experiences - very little music, and no banter. Completely unlike the other areas. At least the combat soundsets worked. (The only time I had banter was in one of the sub areas you unlock later on, and I happened to be halfway up a ladder. I spent two hours there after that, nothing.) My journal seems to still be working fine, as I think I only had one quest not auto-complete in about twenty quest completions. Other areas also seem to be working as intended, though I can't speak for the Exalted Plains really yet.

I agree with Silith above, I especially used to have banter fire after combat ended, often after closing rifts. It seems to have cleared up a bit alongside the journal issues, the banter now will trigger a lot more organically whilst exploring the world.

The banter returned eventually, but at a seemingly slow rate, usually 30 min to an hour, though I was in combat a little bit... Same time as Completed Quests began to auto-untick again as well. :|

However, now I'm back to asterisks in Completed Quests, and no banter.. Great. I have quite a number of open quests too, might be related. Unreliable banter beats no banter at all I suppose.. :/

Now that they've released that combat and being near enemies stifles banter chances, it makes sense how little banter you get on certain maps, like the Western Approach, where red dots are always kind of near. I hope factoring this in is included in the "make banter fire more" fix they come up with.

is there any word on whether or not this will actually be fixed? like i know there's work arounds , i get it. but this is a core part of what makes the game what it is, and there shouldn't be a bug in the first place

Definatly a top priority bug that need's to be fixed

I concur, it should be top priority. Banters make it more interesting and they make me laugh. Especially hearing Lady Cassandra calling Varric an 'ass'. LOL.

The work arounds here helped a lot. Hearing Val Royeaux theme for the first time was pretty profound. They really should make it a priority to fix it. The banter between characters is about the only thing that makes the mind-numbing random side quests tolerable.

Mine seems to be triggering now, after the patch, though I get sporadic dry spells and so it's hard to tell if it's working as intended or if I'm only getting it when I do certain things (or have certain settings).

Does anybody know if they upped the Banter likelihood yet? They said they would after patch 2, and I assumed they would have done a notification about it but I haven't seen anything.

It doesn’t seem to actually do that, given that many people get banter going into combat and coming out of it. Of course that may be broken too.
