Completely mute as in there are no sounds there, including the town folk NPCs? Otherwise I think it's normal, since if I remember correctly, it was said that Val R isn't supposed to have any music (the war table trick to have music there was actually a bug) and no party banter either.

Completely mute as no sounds at all. It's like I've turned the sound all the way down but I haven't. And if I switch character and load a save that one will be mute too. It is quite unnerving.

Wahoooooooo. I have been waiting for a particular line of banter to play... And today my no load, no save farming approach paid off in sooo many ways! Constant banter! And the line I have been waiting for. Onward with the mission!
No load, no save?? Tell me more, please.

I've also had success with no loading/saving. All the stuff I do:
- Play offline, with all the options in the account menu not ticked
- No manual saving
- No loading saves after the first one. If I died and reloaded the last autosave, the banter seemed to be broken again and I'd have to restart. Sometimes loading while in a zone seemed to not give the most reliable banter, so I always ended my sessions at the base
- Journal/codex clearing at the end of each play session
- Not travelling to zones from the war table - it seems to make no difference to me and it saves me having to reset the constant drums whenever I come back to the base
- Got the mount, never use it
- Always fast travel to the first unlocked camp in a zone, and just run everywhere else
- Exhausted all party member and adviser conversation before going to the Hinterlands for the first time
- Headphone mode, no subtitles, hard difficulty, female Qunari warrior
I'm nearing 40 hours on this playthrough, and I get at least a couple banters an hour. Haven't tried out the "dead zones" like the Western Approach yet though. I usually hear banter after combat, but I somewhat keep track of the time since the last banter. When it's getting close to 15 minutes since the last one, I'll try and avoid towns/combat/NPCs or anything else that might suppress the banter, since it often triggers exactly 15 minutes after the last one for me. I haven't extensively tested any of this, for fear of messing up stuff up.
I wouldn't be surprised if the issue stemmed from the sound in some way. I've been fortunate to encounter few bugs besides the banter and some graphical silliness, and my only audio issue has been occasional desyncing of sound effects that gets worse over time, fixed by opening and closing the menu. Maybe that desyncing, even when it's a fraction of a second and almost unnoticable, is what's screwing with the banter?

Here is what I just wrote in the other Party Banter Thread:
After I've had a lot of Banter in the Hinterlands & in the Emerlade Graves in my 3 playthrough, I'm now back to almost zero banter.
My party didn't talk at all in the Western Approach, until I was ready to start "Here Lies the Abyss". I was running to the tower, when Vivienne/Dorian decided to finally talk to each other. This was the only time in the WA that I had banter. I never had much of it there, but more than that.
With that in mind, I waited a long time to explore the WA, but my banter was already worse before that.
- I started with the Hinterlands and had SO MUCH banter between Varric/Solas/Cassandra/Dorian
- Then I explored the Storm Coast and banter became considerably less
- After that I traveled to the Fallen Mire and had three banter....which is enough for that little area
- I started Crestwood after that and only had three or four conversations.
- Exhalted Plains was the same.
- Emerald Graves...here is the thing...I never had Dorian/Sera & Cole in my team before I explored the EG, always just one of them, but all three had their COMPLETE banter in that area. My party was almost never silent.
- Western Approach - one conversation as I explained above
- And now after the WA I started and finished Emprise Du Lion and only had two banters.
I mix my party regularly, but that didn't help at all. I can't wait to go to the Hissing Wastes -.-
Edit:
Okay, I really don't get it, but after I wrote this, I started the game and went to the Hissing Wastes. I'm finished the HW now and had NINETEEN banter. Two of them directly in a row. Didn't do anything different than before. (Party - Dorian/Viv/Varric)

After several hours of absolute silence, I decided to abuse the vague trigger point just outside of the first Storm Coast campsite... and it seems my party considers itself to be in perpetual combat. The 'trigger' only plays end of combat lines, even though there is nothing nearby, and I've camped/reloaded saves etc. Just always an end of combat line at the trigger and a drop sometimes - from the NPCs in the zone that are killing things for me. I can save as though I am not in combat, and my party does not have any weaponry out.
I can't seem to make the party think it ISN'T in combat, though, even swapping zones they load with weapons in hand. So, ofc there is absolutely no dialogue, they think they're in fights when they aren't!
This bug is just getting stranger for me.

I'm playing a new game now, and I've noticed a marked improvement in the amount of banter I'm getting so far when compared to my first playthrough. The only thing I've been doing differently is to make sure I only leave the War Table via fast travel to a zone.
I'm about to reach In Your Heart Shall Burn, so we'll see if this state of affairs continues once I reach Skyhold...

The Western Approach definitely seems to be some sort of odd 'dead zone' when it comes to banter and commentary. Still doing my second play through in which I'm getting banter pretty frequently (about every twenty minutes or so, not the 'won't ever shut up' frequency some people get but a lot better than my initial 'mute for hours on end' first play through) and spent over an hour today closing rifts, establishing camps, and questing in general in the Western Approach and got absolutely nothing out of my party.
I think I remember reading somewhere that banter won't fire if there are enemies nearby. With the utterly ridiculous amount of enemies that are in that area (and the fact that they spawn quickly and seeming infinitely) I wonder if that's what's causing problems with that map.
Sadly, this issue seems to have been mostly forgotten about. It went from being talked about on nearly every forum I visit to... well, this thread itself barely gets more than a post a day now.

I do see the issue mentioned still across NeoGAF and Reddit, I'm assuming Tumblr would be the same. I guess I was waiting to the New Year to see what the devs will do, if they do anything at all. While I very much don't think it will fix the issue, I guess I'm curious to see what happens if Bioware changes the RNG.
My banter/sound/journal continues to work correctly, as far as I can see. I've noticed now that if the journal doesn't auto-complete, it's because the quest ended in a cutscene. I ended up having a lot of banter in the Exalted Plains - more in one area than I've had in the whole game. The banter would never really trigger in the 'main' area, but I'd get a lot of in the plains to the left of the map, and the unlockable areas of the map to the right. Mucking around in the Dead Hand puzzle area produced a lot, as I'm assuming the rest of the Plains doesn't need to be loaded. I was surprised that I had a bit of banter in the swampy area to the top right, as there are a lot of respawning enemies there. Didn't seem to matter?
Hissing Wastes was a bust. I'm at about 95% completion, only two instances of banter through the entire region. I don't know if it's like the Western Approach in that regard? Emprise du Lion was also a bust for a long time, until I got to the sub-areas (quarry/keep/unlockable bridge), and the party began to banter. (There was a quarry where I had four banters in about two minutes, it was surprising.)
The only other thing of note is that I've had a lot more sound syncing issues post patch. I went through an entire thirty second combat in complete silence, only to have all the combat soundsets of the fight then play chronologically as my party stood there. (It was like a very bizarre ghostly radio play.)

Based on my experiences, I can surmise that the comments companions make about the environment do count as banter. So, if you count the environment comments as banter, how silent is your game?

I was plagued with this bug and no workarounds seemed to work. In addition to a lack of banter, I had a lack of background music. As a last resort, I took the nuclear option and made sure my game was backed up, took a deep breath, and uninstalled.
Four hours later it was reinstalled (thanks for that 2.5mb DL cap, Origin >:| ). I have the Digital Deluxe edition with the Flame addon pack. I initially did not download the flame pack, which kept it from loading the original save. I went ahead and started a new game with a different race/class and after I finished the first little rift with V, S, and C went back and downloaded the Flame pack.
I loaded up the old save file (with fear and trepidation) and put three of the NPCs (Bull, Viv, Sara) that are supposed to have a lot of dialogue in the party and went to the Hinterlands. Not only did I have TONS of music, I went from having at best 3 or 4 non-environmental/quest triggered conversations in my entire game to having at least 5 or 6 in my play session the rest of the night. It wasn't the once every 20 minutes I've heard thrown around, but it was enough that for the first time in playing, I was frequently howling in laughter.
I don't know if it's going to stick as I've not yet gone back to do any war table stuff OR changed my party in any way (I'm enjoying what I have while I have it and don't want to have to go through another 4 hours to get it back).

I get 1 - 2 banters (regular ones between companions) while doing the dungeon in crestwood, so yes you can get them in there. Quest related banter does not seem to count as regular banter, but companion comments about the location do (like blackwall talking about the undead in crestwood).
The only zone that bugs out for me is the Western Aproach. I din't get banter there at all, until i finished the Here Lies The Abiss quest. After that banter started to trigger, about 1 in 30 min, slower then in other regions but at least it works. Might be the zone is considered a main quest zone untill you finish that quest.

Thanks, I'm about to do the house in the emerald graves and it scares the beejezus out of me. I want to make sure my banter is working before going in there. Quiet for too long in there and *clap hands twice* I'm ooout

I think I've encountered the bug too...
At the start of the game I've had some banter here and there (but far less than other people report here - more like every hour than every 20 minutes), but it dried up pretty quickly.
Now I can explore the maps for hours, I don't get any banter at all.
About 40 hours into the game and have heard maybe 15 banters. I love DAI, but this kind of breaks the game for me - party banter is one of the things I enjoy most in Dragon Age games.
I feel almost like in skyrim while exploring (except Marcurio was pretty chatty there - always the same lines, but hey, someone was talking!)
The fixes I found aren't helping - I think I put the game on hold, and when this is (hopefully) fixed I'll start over again ![]()

So you think the trick is to reinstall the game and reload old saves? Or to start a new game first and next go back to old savings?

When I scan through this topic, I get really angry. "Walking" has been my main concern but even I will admit that this is something trivial in comparison to the mad things people have to suffer through in order to get this to work.
Some of these seem at least as immersion breaking to me as the missing walk-feature, if not even much more. "Quick-travel several times around the known world" or "mount, dismount, rest"...so stupid. ![]()
The mess in which Bioware left the game just prior to the holiday, were probably the majority of players planned to play, is frustrating. ![]()
PS: The game has a "repair" feature. So normally nobody should have to redownload and reinstall. If this really works...would be mindblowingly stupid. -.- I definitely wont redownload, would take a day or two. The usual "travel via war table" has been sufficent for me to get enough party banter for now and is the most I am willing to do. Bioware, fix your stuff please!

This thread has pretty much just become a support group for people who refuse to give up and wait for the hopefully imminent patch, Good for you guys, I'll just be over here playing DA:O and DA2. Sure is nice when a game works as intended. That's why I can't wait for TES:VI and the next Fallout, games that presumably will support robust modding. If on those games the devs dragged their heels on fixing such a critical bug or design flaw as this, it would've been patched by modders weeks ago, or at least remedied by proper workarounds that work mostly right, not random stuff that will possibly succeed at fixing something maybe but probably not.

I got a PS4 copy for christmas and thought the banter bug was finally not present, as I got pretty regular banter in the Hinterlands the first two times I was there. And then the banter started to vanish. Now it's pretty much gone, apart from the odd environmental comment at the beginning and weird "end-of-combat"-lines in the Storm Coast.
I got two copies now that are affected. Really happy about this.
One thing that occured to me is that enemies spawn very fast in some regions, meaning I am almost in constant combat. Maybe the game sometimes doesn't realises when you are out?
I haven't found a way to make banter reappear in y PS4 version yet. On PC it's more of a coin-toss every hour.

Might not help anyone...and might just be another random fix that doesn't actually help, but I notice considerably more banter when i have the game on one of Biowares predetermined graphic settings as opposed to my custom settings which i played with for 95% of my gameplay.
