Hello fellow gamers who are suffering from this pain in the ass bug.

I wanted to post my findings after trying out some workarounds on a fresh character today. After getting to the Hinterlands for the first time I got considerably more banter than on my other characters (one every 20 minutes max I'd say, though I wasn't really counting the time). If one might be so bold one might say that this particular character might not even be under this dastardly spell which we call the banter bug. Maybe. At least for now.

All right, so here's what I did:

1. Disable all the unused audio devices from control panel --> sound and from the windows device manager.

2.  Delete all saves including the profile setting ones. Launch the game, connect to the servers for importing your world state and proceed to change all the settings to your liking.

3. Create new character and after first save alt+f4 and set Origin to offline mode. Launch the game and untick all the online settings from the account tab and proceed to play offline.

4. Untick all the stars from codex and the journal ASAP when new entries get unlocked.

5. Went through the prologue and all the way up to the Hinterlands without manual saving once. Just quicksaves.

One thing I immediately noticed on this character was that I could hear the armor clanking sound when wearing heavy armor. Especially noticable when you start to loot or harvest something. I did not hear that on any of my other characters.

I hope this helps some of you out there and if you don't see an improvement on your first new character try rolling a few others and see how they fare. I think there might be something in the prologue or otherwise the start of the game that causes the banter bug and you might get lucky with one character.

Well, I'm off to play with this character. I'll let everyone know here if the bug lands on me later.

PS. I was playing on the Home Theater audio setting and automatic graphical settings minus the 2x MSAA it tried to enable for me. (Using SMAA through SweetFX)

UPDATE: Armor clanking sound is gone with a crafted Defender Mail. The normal, uncrafted one and Defender Coat which have the same model have the clanking sound. Weird.

Im about 20 hours in a playthrough and have been getting consistent banter. Sometimes its 2 an hour, sometimes its 5 an hour, but fairly consistent. I have not saved manually once, and musing the preset ultra graphics settings, and am doing the journal thing. I also AM NOT taking that lotus and root quest from mother giselle becasue on all my other playthroughs it constantly pings like it's getting completed long after I actually do it.

I'm having a weird burst of talkativeness in Emprise du Lion. Banters seem to be coming in twos.

Yeah, I've had 3 banters inside 10 minutes the first time I entered the Hissing Wastes, but after that they all just looked embarassed like they forgot that they were supposed to be sulking all the time.

All I can say is I watched the YouTube video that had all the banter and its crazy. After 2 playthroughs with mixing my party around regularly I think I only ever heard like 10% of what was there

I've always had a low banter influx but recently they stopped even commenting on new campsites. They used to say things like "We could camp here" or some such, but they don't anymore. Not even my own character says it. I'm 94 hours in on my first playthrough and haven't beaten it yet XD I run around all the time, but I really miss the banter. I'll try some of these work arounds next time I play.

I bought the game for my husband on xbox 360, so I can reobtain my PC for my own personal use.
This however made it painfully clear  how much this bug exists. I actually have to learn how to use the console controller just so I can hear the banter :( But at least I have a means to have what I want :D

Just updating that I'm about halfway or a little less through this playthrough and I still have had plentiful banter. I don't know if it was the patch, but this is all I've been doing.

The main thing I do is never manual save, only auto save.I don't do anything else unless I feel as if banter is stopping/not happening. If that happens I clear all my completed quests in the journal, delete 2 of the 3 auto saves (the milestone auto save seems to always be there, and 2 more. I keep the most recent.) and then wait for a new auto save and load that one. With this I have gotten consistent banter between all companions regardless of who i bring out, and it's probably been on average every 10-15 minutes, with occasional times where I'll get 5 or 6 in 30 minutes or only 2 or 3 in a couple hours. This "fix" also only takes like a minute to do and is the least immersion breaking of all the other fixes I've seen where you have to do a bunch of stuff. Luckily it's gotten to the point where I don't even think about the banter being or not being there most of the time so I can fully enjoy it without having that "oh **** where is the banter" feeling every 2 seconds.

Good luck, and hopefully Bioware fixes this on their end soon!

Man... I don't think I could bear to play through this entire game relying only on auto save!  Gah...

I've had similar results with only running auto saves. Quick saving has been fine if your worried about tough fights, so long as you're only 'playing' from an auto save whilst exploring for example.

However, after approx 90 mins to 2 hours in an area the banter will completely stop.  Even if I switch up party members who have not spoken to each other yet, they won't talk until I begin an entirely new area.  Though I guess this is tied to quest progression

Did you manually save before? I mean, I only manual saved once (or twice, I think) but is there still a chance that I can get a consistent rate of banter back if I just load an Autosave, and delete the manual one? Or do I have to start ALL OVER again and never manual save?

I recently finished the game and I don't think I encountered this bug at all. I was aware that some players were having this bug so I was paying close attention to the frequency of the banters. I don't think I ever had a playing session without any. I wasn't timing them but it felt similar to DA2 banter. I wanted to give some information here so hopefully it might help some other players.

- My playing time from start to finish was 68 hours. (I skipped some less interesting side quests but I did enough to get my Inquisitor to level 21).

- Each playing session was probably 2-4 hours.

- I started on December 24th which I guess was after the most up to date patch.

- I always used the war council to travel to an area if possible (Leliana and Cullen had quests that weren't on the council map).

- I used a horse once, realised it was kinda pointless, and spent the rest of the game on foot.

- I used plenty of manual saves - I had 6 save slots and was overwriting the oldest each time. I never used a quick save and I never loaded from an autosave.

- I cleared the "new icons" from quests quite regularly (mainly because I can get a bit obsessive about "what do I want to do next?") but I didn't clear the codex at all. I also never even visited the completed quests section. I only cleared them from inventory items when I was back at Haven/Skyhold ready to sell stuff.

- I mainly used Blackwall, Cassandra and Vivienne, occasionally subbing in Solas and Dorian. I used Varric for his personal quest. Used Iron Bull once but didn't like him. Never used Sera or Cole. I never felt like "this combination has run out of things to say".

- I used some custom graphics settings. The "automatic" setting was dropping my framerate into the 40's so I turned a few things down until I felt it was consistently around 60.

Yea, this. I hit whatever trigger it is that makes them talk, and then they're Chatty Cathies for the next 15-20 min. Then I guess they all get sore throats and have to remain silent for the duration of the zone. Drives me crazy.

I thought I'd share my experience with some of suggested workarounds, namely:

- offline in Origin

- offline ingame

I've been playing this way for about 10 hours now and my experience with it is mixed at best, more negative to be honest.

When I got online again yesterday - both in Origin and ingame, to sync my saves to the cloud and my achievements to the keep - I kept playing this way. I was hearing at least as much banter as when I was offline. Actually more but that was due to a new combination of characters for a short time (so there is at least confirmation that you can exhaust banter when not changing characters).

What's more is that I suddenly heard more music than in the previous ten hours and even on maps I did visit during my offline play. Or in other words I heard music for the first time again after many hours of near silence and those were the offline hours, I'm pretty sure.

The only thing I do regularly is travel via wartable. It's easy to do, does not break immersion and it seems to help the banter. The offline-workaround did not work, at least for me.

PS: Also keep in mind there is a potential for savegame disaster when playing offline. If you forget to switch Origin in offline mode and start the game being online, the game will notice that your local savegame date differs from your cloud save and will ask you which one to use. ONE WRONG CLICK there and your more up-to-date savegame might be gone. It's the local savegame. The one in the cloud is obviously outdated after playing in offline mode for a while.

So be careful when playing offline! I suggest manual backup of savegames on a daily-basis.

Disabling cloud is the first thing I did after installing Origin. It does more harm than good.

Fair point. But without messing with the settings and having a very stable online connection anyway, I've never had trouble. It's my last backup in case of total hardware failure lol. :D

I have played for over 300 hours on over 10 Playthroughs, here is what I can add as far as my observations on the bug.

In the hinterlands if u stick with varrick , solas and casandra, it does occur often, But if you get Sera and Viviian at 4 power and continue qusting in hinterlands its much less.

Also I have noticed the issue had gotton worse on my 2nd and up playthroughs, not sure if the data caches and gets corrupted or cluttered.

I just did all of emerald graves with varrick, sera, iron bull and dorian, did every quest on the map.  prob 3 hours of play time and only heard 1 conversation.

I realy hope there is a way to fix this as it does ruin the connection you get from your companions.

Bioware pls feel free to check my orgin account to see the number of playthoughs and saves, hope this can help fix the issue.

But I have to end by saying BRAVO on Sera, there are a lot of opionons on her but I find her the most well written deep and adorable characters, its a shame the male romances are dull and boring, Realy  why would I want to romance I self rightouse, future pope ( Divine) LOL

I think you may onto something with the 4 power theory. On my first 2 characters I recruited sera + viv at something like 8+ power, may have been more. However I'm not so sure about subsequent playthroughs theory - my second playthrough had an enormous amount of banter in the 15 or so hours, like at least once every 5 minutes, 10 mins max, with no deletion of any save files (had no idea the bug even existed back then).  However I have been recruiting sera and viv at 4 power from playthrough #3 onwards (when I first got the bug) and noticed significantly less frequent firing, anywhere from 10 mins to 60+ mins.

I'm now curious, have you tried a fresh playthrough recruiting sera and viv at say, 10+ power? I should also mention that during my 2nd playthrough, as I wasn't aware of the bug, I was loading quick saves and ignoring the codex/journal, yet still so much banter.

Also agree with you 100% on Sera's character/banter, always makes me laugh :)

Travelling from the war table and/or frequently clearly new quest/inventory markers still seems to have helped somewhat, but I still hear few banters. If I take the same three people for the whole game (90hrs for me), I hear most of their banter. I assume it's most, there are some I haven't heard. Swapping characters makes it trigger less often for me.

I watched the youtube video. Holy sh**! 5:30 h of banter. I´m sure I heard about 10-15 % of it in two PT (about 170 h) with mixed party.

First I wondered why no one comented on romances or past main quests, now I know: They do, but I don´t hear it.

It´s terrible.

i had this problem with my first playthrough, have tried ever workaround i've come across and it has not changed a thing, if not made it worse. i've played a 5 hour session today and got 1 banter right at the start of the hinterlands

it's SO disappointing, you don't get the connection with the companions at all, and the patch fixed nothing, it makes me so frustrated and angry

I've had this problem and have tried most of the suggestions here to fix it but I really wish there was a patch. I finished my first playthrough with very little banter then I ended up getting a new PC while starting my second, and switching to a rig with better specs hasn't seemed to change much. I'll occasionally get a session where the banter almost seems normal then It'll go back to silence the next time I leave skyhold. I really want to hear what my companions have to say but I don't want to do so on youtube. It's killing me that I'll probably be on my third playthrough before anyone has a solid fix for this bug.

I'm almost at the point where even if I were to get a fix I'd be paranoid it's not working because I'll run around an area just to see if anyone will speak up. Hopefully we'll get a fix soon that doesn't require constant vigilance, particular travel and the right phase of the moon to hear banter.

I just gave up after getting to Skyhold, and upon reflection this is the primary reason. I’m not doing a second playthrough with no banter.
